Alexander Malofeev plays Rachmaninoff: Lilacs Op. 21 No. 5 

Dear Alexander, I'm a lady of 57 from Argentina. My most beloved composer is Rachmaninoff of whom Mr Pletnev once said "he's not a pianist, he´s not a composer, he's a soul", well I feel like you "channel" Rachmaninoff´s soul. This lovely piece follows a beautiful poem by Ekaterina Andreyena Beketova: In the morning, at daybreak, over the dewy grass, I will go to breathe the crisp dawn; and in the fragrant shade, where the lilac crowds, I will go to seek my happiness... In life, only one happiness it was fated for me to discover, and that happiness lives in the lilacs; in the green boughs, in the fragrant bunches, my poor happiness blossoms... Alexander’s interpretation is so matching with the poem. Exquisite and beautiful. I can see the blooming lilacs and even smell the sweet fragrance. My poor happiness blossoms...

I was impressed with your music as soon as I heard you play and I love Rachmaninoff. However, yesterday I looked up the music and one version of the Concerto #3 was 100 pages long. Now, I am totally amazed that you can memorize these very long pieces of music. Thank you so much for all of your very hard work and your amazing spirit. My grandson, who plays the clarinet, has to learn piano for his college program. He said you inspire him.
