This was painful to watch. I’ve got a 156 GTA for some time now and pretty much all the work you mention has been done, which reminds me how expensive it actually is to run... luckily driving it makes you forget all that 🙂

I love my 156 GTA Sportwagon I took it to RR shelsley walsh hill climb, it's a fantastic car! I started my restoration before xmas, stripping the car for a full respay and chasing the surface rust in the wheel arches and floor. I found in the 156 inside the inner seals are full of surface rust and needs treating, not sure this happens with 147 and if anyone else is stripping parts of the car everything is stuck on and a lot of bolts will brake off😅 Another great video!

Good comments on the 147 GTA. I'd like to add that the top motor mount tends to go bad, suspension bushes need replacing quite often, the factory radiator and hoses are rubbish, and its very important to replace the diff with a Q2 or Quaife. Other than that if you do the maintenance on them and cambelt changes etc they are actually amazingly reliable. Now someone just needs to find a long term ECU solution for when they inevitably all pack up :D

Hello! The best upgrade on all these hi-powered Tipo-cars is adding a front lower horisontal subframe brace, which stops all torque-steer. Goes for the Fiat Coupe too (especially). OMP makes one for 155/156 which you can mod slightly to fit on any Tipo-car.

Driving a 1.6 TS 147 which I love this one's my dream car. But being sincere I couldn't afford it. My unit does around 9 litres for 100 km doing a little bit more than 500 km so it's not cheap, but the GTAs tend to double that fuel consuptiom so the total fuel reach will be less than 300 km.

Thanks for the video. Agree with most of your advice and pointers. If you don't plan on taking your car to the track, then the standard differential and 305mm brakes work just fine. Coil-over suspension, anti-roll bars and good tires fix all of the handling flaws that came with the 147 GTA from the factory.
@OggyGTA
@OggyGTA 4 года назад
Back in the day, the main reason for upgrading to the Q2 diff was down to the number of standard diffs on (mainly) 147s and GTs that exploded. It's a VERY worthwhile mod if only for the improved cornering.
@ItaliaAutos
@ItaliaAutos 4 года назад
I feel it only improved handling at speed. If it wasn't for the diff exploding leave it for the track. Id say antiroll bars are the best upgrade over everything. But that 156 of ours was super.

@@ItaliaAutos I had the regular 147 facelift with the light brown leather interior. In those versions the door cards were covered in faux leather and it was no problem. Note that you have to use the nail polish remover WITHOUT aceton, which should be available from Bootz etc. Only apply it to a microfiber cloth and then polish the handle and button surrounds. Result is a very smooth and nice black surface and the white arrows etc don't suffer.

Very good informative video. I have been contemplating buying a 147/156 GTA as a weekend car for sometime now. Coming from a V8 M3 that wasn't without problems which were usually costly I can see after watching your video the GTA will probably be similar. The rust issues with the GTA is the extra ball ache though that the later M3's thankfully don't seem to suffer. Seeing cars as low as £8k up to nearly £20k. Some of the upper priced cars have been for sale for some time even before the 'Virus' raised it's head is £20k realistic?

The fact they drive wolly, is because of the sway bars and shock absorbers. Get some decent ones (Fx Alfaholics and Bilstein). One common mistake is to lower them, but if you go for roadholding and not for looks, don't go there, it will get worse. Don't listen to people who try to justify their slammed cars and who say it's better. It's not. Try to go on the track with new aforementioned parts at OEM height and after that at lowered height and you'll see and feel the difference. But if the GTA-looks are not unique enough and you feel the need to screw up the handling; go right ahead and slam it, until it scrapes. But don't be surprised a standard and well maintained diesel 147/156 can corner faster than your car.

one tip, dont buy a GTA that is absolutely slammed like this one, and the loud exhaust, its such a gypsy thing. quaiffe is only useful at the limit, so it is a track mod. stock suspention is good, but anti roll bar upgrade is an absolute must. In my opinion the best GTA is mostly stock, well kept, not raced, enthusiast car. I have a rule when I buy Alfa, the owner must have multiple Alfas in his garage.

Stock diffs are very prone to failure on those cars (and when the diff goes, it can take the gearbox with it as well), so a Q2/Quaife is a necessity, not a track mod ;-).

@FrankishKnight 4 года назад
@@davidwysocki8635 I think it was a quality control problem from Alfa, because you see +%90 of the exploded diffs exploded with less than 50.000 kms. I think if mine hasn't exploded at 130.000 it never will.

Have a q2 lsd, cf2 exhaust manifolds (rest of the exhaust is standard :-/), 330 mm brakes, coilovers, shortshifter, and some other bits and pieces. Oh, and a baby seat as well :). My advice is not exaggerate with the wheel size, and don't go with a too stiff coilovers. Good thing to do is put some polyurethane on the strategic points in the suspension...check the petrol hoses between the engine banks, and some heat shield around the ecu or reposition it.
