Right now everyone on RU-vid is milking the start of the 2022 season, and most of the other channels are making videos repeating the same stuff we already know. Your channel is a gem that stands out because you only make videos that are full of knowledge from an expert. I love your approach of making videos only when there is something to talk about and you don't try to add filler material to make it longer to please the algorithm. All I want to say is we appreciate these videos regardless of how often they come out. :)

Kyle, can you speak to how big of an engineering department is employed at FIA themselves, deciding on the myriad car spec rule sets and annual changes (and deliberating on novel designs that are ban-worthy). I wonder, when they hand down these rules once a year to the teams, what a frantic commotion THAT must be as the other race commences : to re-engineer the car to min/ max to the new rules !

Hey Kyle, speaking of fancy T trays, do you think Aston Martin's double T tray is actually unfeasible in the regulations and is a troll/red herring for other teams to waste their time on trying to figure out? Assuming launch car renders don't actually have to follow regulations, could they added the double T tray just to throw other teams off and waste precious development time trying to chase something that cannot be done?

Seeing these vids on how much of the aero is focused on vortexes and aero management instead of pure downforce and aerodynamics, I’d love to see a top team make a truly unlimited car, free of all restrictions. I know there was the Adrian Newey Gran Turismo car, but I can’t imagine that an open-wheel design would be optimized. Too much turbulence. Also, if teams nowadays made a car with the restrictions they had in the 80s, would it look more like a modern car, or like a refined 80s car? I’d love to hear your thoughts on these.

Dear Kyle, as former f1 engineer can you give us an insight what happens at the Teams when the new cars getting revealed? Are the aero departments also start to analyse the concepts from the first pictures? Are they even evaluating the competitor concepts right away with some car models etc - or when does this start? Are they doing some kind of „benchmarking“ to their own solutions? Would be curious to know this 😬 Many thanks in advance! BR!

Hi Kyle, thanks for these amazing contents as always. just a quick question here: Cars from the last era seems to like to create as many vortexes as possible, but this year many teams seems to try avoiding that, why is that? what are the differences between these two concept? Thanks again!
@jubuttib
@jubuttib 2 года назад
I think at least a part of it is that FIA's regulation changes have limited their opportunities for creating vortices quite severely. They have no traditional barge boards anymore, front wings were massively simplified, as were the rear wings, etc. Could just be largely down to that.
@EvLSpectre
@EvLSpectre 2 года назад
All of them were generated up front to help control the outwash and very dirty air from the tires. With the extra additions like covers and winglets for tires, that seems not as important. Instead, having very clean air flow to the undertray for maximum ground effect is the play at the moment.
@someonewithsomename
@someonewithsomename 2 года назад
mmm, regulations are different. They would still do that, if they could
@EvLSpectre
@EvLSpectre 2 года назад
@@someonewithsomename maybe if it suits the aero package they are going around. But with that large emphasis on downforce from the underbody. Making all the vortexes to push and control tire wake might be taking away clean underfloor flow, which so far seems to be the big thing teams are sticking too
@someonewithsomename
@someonewithsomename 2 года назад
@@EvLSpectre why is that? As I understand vortexes are primary a control tool to separate and manipulate airflow, so you would design the airflow so that all the clean air you need are passed into the tunnels, and all the dirty air from the tires are separated by the vortexes. It's what all the teams did in 2021, it's what every team are doing today. If you've seen all the videos here, you might've noticed that on every car there are still small vortex generation parts on the front spoiler around the tire and on the floor. Which for the most part do the same thing as in 2021 cars. The main difference is that the teams can't do everything they want and are limited by regulations, which do not allow lots of vortex generators. So they try to do smart and cheeky stuff with curvature angles, supporting structures and what not. As you can see that ability to control the airflow with vortexes is still highly desirable for the engineers.

I'm wondering if running the full wet tires will have a bigger downforce penalty on these cars compared to the previous generation? Assuming these cars will be very ride height sensitive due to the increased influence of ground effect, won't the larger diameter wet tires increase ride heights and make sealing the floor more difficult?
