Hey guys, I know it's been a while, but hopefully you enjoy the analysis videos! p.s. Just realised I didn't talk about the rollhoop and some people are probably interested in the inlets there. It's likely that the lower one is engine intake, and upper is a feed for a gearbox cooler or other rear centreline cooler. The inlets look a bit funky because they are stacked around Alfas blade style rollhoop, which is somewhat unique on the grid. Hope that helps!

Such configuration is definitely easier to package, but wouldn't it be more beneficial to use the highest, cleanest intake to feed the turbo?

@KevinJDildonik Год назад
@@leoarc1061 Most teams the intake manifold for the engine is a rather large box above the engine which has to be fed from the front to help condition the air (the box and inlets are tuned to get air in faster). It's usually easier to snake other cooling down the back of that box. But depending on the team, the engine, etc that can change. They could also have only one inlet up top for the engine and get more air out of the sidepods for other cooling. You may remember the last Renault had a huge inlet up top betting big on smaller sidepods, and the Mercedes with slim pods, so more teams are clearly seeing benefits from the top concept.
@leoarc1061
@leoarc1061 Год назад
@cal derra Yes, but Sauber is using the lower rollhoop section to feed the engine which is likely to ingest low energy turbulent flow from the halo and driver's helmet. Using the top section would've perhaps provided better flow for the compressor even if it ingests the boundary layer of the lower part of the rollhoop's upper section.

Im happy you uploaded another video. I love the technical aspect of F1 more than the racing a lot of the time. Other channels just want to simplify everything which is more appealing to the masses, but not to me. This channel does a great job of being much more in depth, while still keeping concepts down to earth and easy to understand.

You should do aerodynamic analysis on older f1 and Le Mans cars. For example the lotus type 88 or maybe do analysis on exhausts exiting out the diffuser with the older 90s f1 cars etc. I’ve learned a lot about aerodynamics from your channel and I’m eager to continue learning.

Scarbs agrees the sawtooth floor is a red herring. I do think it's a smart one. It is technically legal. It almost certainly has been tested in CFD or maybe even wind tunnel so it's a real concept. But it was likely vetoed either because it didn't work, was too complex to spend budgeted time on, or maybe even they were worried F1 would close the loophole and they'd have wasted the effort. If any other team hadn't seen this, they'd almost certainly spend some time analyzing it now. Just like showing off the "high altitude" cobra cooling veins. Smart moves. Keeps your final car under wraps, yet shows off real 23 regs, yet might also fool other teams into wasting some CFD or wind tunnel time. I wish Alfa could translate this into laptime. Their designs are up there with the leading teams. The resulting car just... Isn't.

Hey Kyle. Great to see you back. Thank you for taking your time and explaining all sorts of things. I´d like to ask you something about GTP cars that ran in the Daytona 24h this year. The different manufacturers took different approches with their diffusors I´ve seen in this "IMSA GTP 101: Porsche 963 Tech Tour" Video from "The Racer Channel" towards the end if the video. Aero stuff begins at 7:31. Why would you choose a short or long strake in the diffusor. Also, which solution do you favour and why regarding the fairings behind the rear wheels?
@rolandotillit2867
@rolandotillit2867 Год назад
Acura proved they had a good solution, by mud stomping the field. They were just more efficient aerodynamically. They specifically focused on getting more out of the diffuser, to run less rear wing.

I would love to see an aero breakdown of something like the Red Bull Gran Turismo prototype, comparing the aero strategies of a strictly controlled car in contrast to a free rules car. How much are they restricted in terms of clean air flow vs flow management? Slippery surface vs downforce? How limited are these designs? Or even, an analysis of an older car from the early 2000s or even the 80s. How have the aero rules changed? Are they more effective or restricted now due to the rules?

@KYLE.ENGINEERS Just noticed something interesting from testing, the cushion in the Mercedes forms a part of the surface on the inside of the halo. It has an interesting perimeter that intersects part of the halo area. Others have just squared it off before it reaches that curve up to the halo. Will be interesting to watch when they remove it to get out of the car from the view of the helmet facing halo cam.

I'd say those floor edges are most certainly a ruse. The actual car AR showed off didn't have them and was overall different in various places. And it wasn't the stock model, nor was it the last year's AR. They probably made the renders different from the physical revealed car in order to raise discussion about them and lead any analyzers astray.

great video, really clear explanations. I wonder how correct do you think your analysis and thoughts to be given the amount of time you had, and how much would one expect it to change as one would pursue this professionally. the details, what are they exactly, what makes up of the majority time spent. given limited number of cfd simulations allowed, is it essentially guess work about what would work better? or more like a steady path to the eventual solution given the current goals.
