As a morrocan I have long awaited for this very video discussing our region's geopolitics with Algeria, it truely saddens me the current state of affairs, and find it outrageous that a good portion of our budget is wasted on this matter when a good chunk of our population lives off of 20usd monthly, great work as always Shirvan, god bless. **Edit:** The 20 USD expression was specifically used to refer to the inhabitants of mountain locked regions barely surviving during winters, a family huddled around the wood fire in a mud hut, with avalanches and not even the notion of electricity, by no means was I referring to city dwellers, which in all regards of living standards are no different, most of the elderly and uneducated work-force relying on manual labor barely go through the month on mere hundreds of MADs saved up after sorting their bills, "Until it hits the bone" has been and will certainly be the most fitting description to our mode of living, most of us cannot afford to prepare for the uncertainty of the future as they are already too focused on paying the bills of the month.

In my opinion Morocco should play the generous hand and give Algeria some geopolitical guarantees that would render the historical desire for a corridor to the Atlantic obsolete, like launching a joint infrastructure/logistic project that would enable to transport goods extracted from the southern regions to the nearest ocean access thus profit for both parties. I am from the Moroccan city oujda, I lived there all of 18 years, and it's the closest point to Algeria where you can find the people from both sides waving at each other with smile on face and sometimes even we have dance parties with loud music even they are not with us , actually our people and there people never hated each other, in fact we have families between us and we all consider ourselves as the same people because we are from the five Maghreb countries and Morocco and Algeria is our closest as we have literally the same language, faces, colors, and we share a lot of cultural similiraties, although we are not 100% the same, but we actually are the same. So we never hated each other as people even our countries governments has beef but it doesn't make any change, You can only see the hate comments from both sides precisely from the younger immature aged class, and trust me I've there once, and as soon as you get consciouse the more love you present and show to our beloved neighbor and dear family Algeria.

As a Moroccan this is about the most neutral a person could get about this rivalry before calling out any of the people who orchestrate this disastrous show in the Maghreb. Thank you for not showing any bias and stating the facts. It's not about military muscle anymore, because both countries know that if a war broke out it would be one of the deadliest wars in Modern History. It would end up worse than the Iran Iraq War except this time both Countries have a lot better technology, millions would die and there would be no winner. It just depends on which countries people decide it's enough and rise up, but in the end it will only be a small trade of land in return for destroying your country. Us Algerians and Moroccans need to protests for better rights and the normalizing of relations, we don't want to end up like Lebanon, we don't want to involve foreign powers to end up like Libya. No, we need to do this domestically, if they ignore or opress us, we have to stand up for our better well being. We can't let these military master minds destroy our countries. Respect to the effort deployed in explaining this slow rising rivalry / animosity. While you covered pretty well the historical origins of the conflict, I nevertheless have a comment about recent developments. Actually, the last couple of years have witnessed a bunch of Algerian actions that threatened the statut-quo situation: 1. Back up of Polisario proxy fighting group in El Guerguerat crisis (blocus of Moroccan southern road to Mauritania, solved by Moroccan army) 2. Formal and unfounded accusation of Morocco over North Algeria fires 3. Decision to "close" Algeria sky to Moroccan aeroplanes, both civil and miltarian On the Moroccan side, the king reaffirmed Morocco's readiness to open borders back. His last speeches have even been criticized as "too pacific" in regards with the neighbor's aggressive policy. The only "hostile" action by Morocco was its UN ambassador requesting Algeria to organize an independence referendum in Kabyle region, which you perfectly described as a retaliation to long aged Algerian support to Polisario front. Thanks again for the video.

1.The Western Sahara group never had the opportunity to decide their fate. The relationship with the Kabyle is peaceful excluding the Seperatist group of the Mak party as matter of fact there was combined and organized efforts involving all the Algerian states to help put out the fires in their regions later down that road a terrible act of lynching and murder happened within Kabyle lands and guess what? The Kabyle people stood a cooperative and helpful stance in investigating and arresting those involved in the act. In conclusion Western Sahrawis didn't accept forced Moroccan you are speaking of two different stances. 2. The timing of the offer to open the borders had too much of a "convenient timing" to be coincidence, in addition to that the attempts of sending spies into Algerian lands and the recent bonding the Morrocan government made with the zionists gave more reasons to cut off ties with Morocco in favor of Algerian security.

How come then historical figures of Algeria's independence Movement including several Algerian presidents were training in Morocco (Ben Bella, Boumediene, Boudiaf, Bouteflika) ? This video proves Morocco refused France's deal to recover past territories in order to support Algerian indepedentists. As for the Moroccan Sahara, nobody believes in your BS. The Sahara is Moroccan, recognized by the US, the deal is done. This was a highly informative and useful video that explained the situation pretty well. I know there's a lot more to the Morocco-Algeria issue than what's presented here, but it's given a good summary of the overall situation. Thank you.

@@qasimrafiq275 ...So do islamists and other people. You literally said "love from Pakistan". Whether you are Pakistani or not, your nation legalizes rape on women and had a islamistic military coup to break peace with India. What's your point? I don't care about what you said with "imaan"; it's just bs doctrine from Saudi. Many muslims in islamic nations are horrible hypocrites just like you who is intolerant and judges people based on biases, which is the same what Algerian and Moroccan nationalists do. "Have Imaam". What a joke while there are wars in Syria, Afghanistan and Yemen, where innocent people regardless of culture get scalped because of islamists. "Have a imaam", when you treat non-muslims like shit. "Have imaam" when people like you worship the ideology of Saudis, which has nothing to do with islam anymore. "Have imaam" when Pakistan actively recruits terrorists. You will be also surprised how less islamistic Algerians are compared to people like you. "Have imaam" lol. Unlike you, we don't have islamistic extremists as teachers in schools or mosques. If you think all Algerians and Moroccans hate each other; sorry to burst your bubble but our governments are idiots who make hatespeach in media just like you guys do it against India. There is a reason why our language Darija ist comprehensible in Algeria because we are brothers. Shove that. No rational person cares for your propaganda. You make Saudis proud.

Algeria & Morocco are similar in many ways but also very different. Morocco is a much more stable country. They have a booming tourist industry & many movies are made there because it's considered safe. Algeria has had many problems with insurgencies, uprisings, Islamic extremism & terrorists, and not only recently. In the 1990's an Islamic insurgency group (GIA) launched terrorist campaigns against government figures and institutions to protest the banning of the Islamist parties. Morocco hasn't had such problems.

4:56 this is the most important part of this video Algerians have a very anti-imperialist anti-European "zeal" (even tho most of the Gaz and Oil is sold to the EU). Morroco is more "realistic" in its decision and goes with the flow, so it quickly adapted to the new world and leaned to the global superpowers of the west. Of course, this goes against everything Algerians stand for, as the "revolutionary war" is a form of "identity" from the average person.

I think this has to do with the historic continuity Shirvan talked about. Morocco has been a country for centuries with an elite and thus has some form of historical memory and established foreign policy.
@MohammedYASSINE
@MohammedYASSINE 2 года назад
@@algerianmapper6344 it is realistic by power standards. The EU and the US are superpowers and Morocco goes with the flow, if not flex with them, in this context instead of adopting double standards. Morocco has won many political fights against France, Spain and now is trying to flex even with Germany. I am not sure about keeping the same standards as neighbouring countries, because numbers says otherwise, and you can check that; but in any case Morocco doesn't have the same resources as Algeria and comparing the economical performance of both countries is by itself a sign of how good the kingdom is performing without precious natural resources.

Before I start, I'm not a Moroccan - just an outside observer. I may not have all the facts, so correct me if I'm wrong. It is evident that European powers are perhaps the most destructive factor in Africa's destabilization. However, Algiers in particular is at fault here for starting the rivalry. Land that was historically Morocco's for centuries was taken by force by the French, and with no valid claims, Algeria reneged on their promise to return Morocco's rightful lands - who supported their independence against the French. Of course, Algeria can't be blamed for trying to hog all the resources in those lands, but establishing friendly ties was thrown out the window when they refused to compromise with Morocco. Then, they further meddled with Morocco in Western Sahara, which pushed these tensions past any previous point. Of course, Morocco is also at fault for enticing rebels in Algeria. And waging war on both Algeria and Western Sahara. It's a complex issue at this point, but US and USSR have also played major roles in backing the violence there. It doesn't help that Algeria turned nationalist and revolutionary after their independence, while Morocco has had a relatively stable monarchy. Hopefully the Algerians elect a reliable government that can improve ties with Morocco and perhaps return rightful Moroccan territory with concessions.

They should have returned it from France in the first place as they gained independence way before Algeria did…too many lives lost by Algeria to free land that should’ve been freed by Morocco since they knew it was their land. Algeria has too many problems of their own that they should focus on instead of looking towards the western sahara issue. If Morocco wants it’s territory back from Algeria, then they need to show the same energy with Spain for both cueta and melilla.
@jomo333
@jomo333 Год назад
@@id9679 It is important to recognize that Morocco won its independence from France before Algeria and that it was a significant contributor to the success of the Algerian independence movement. Morocco granted the Algerian National Liberation Front permission to operate within its borders and provided crucial support for their cause during the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962). The French government retaliated against Morocco, and it even lost some of its territories to France, including parts of its eastern land, as a result of this assistance. Algeria has faced its own challenges ever since gaining independence. The Western Sahara problem, however, is intricate and must not be taken lightly. A government-in-exile for the Sahrawi people, who are fighting for independence in Western Sahara, has been established in Algeria with support from the Algerian government. Given that Western Sahara has been governed by Morocco for many years, many Moroccans consider this to be a betrayal. The conflict has arisen between Morocco and Spain over the Spanish enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta, which are situated on the Moroccan coast. These areas have been claimed by Morocco for a long time, and it has made attempts to take them back. Notably, the circumstances in Ceuta and Melilla are unrelated to the Western Sahara problem and shouldn't be brought up in the conversation about it. The history of Morocco and Algeria is complex and multifaceted, and it is important to consider all relevant factors in order to understand the current tensions between the two countries.

Long story short, Morocco got Western Sahara in part due to US encouragement.. Also, for signing a peace treaty with Israel. All while Algeria sees Israelis as colonialists. With a little education, they would know that Jewish history in Israel predates Arab and Muslim identity by a whopping 1,600 years. Unfortunately, Algeria supports the destruction of Israel, and losing West Sahara seems like a divine response.
