Me and my friend met Martin on big trout lake. We were cleaning up after lunch getting ready to go out fishing again and he was paddling by. We met him the next day landlocked on burnt island. We didnt see his canoe and pulled off. Happy surprise to see a friendly face already on the site nearest us. Leaving at 6pm and getting to canoe lake by 9 was quite the feat lol especially considering what all of us paddled through just to reach burnt island
Beautiful & magnificient camp site - but ohhh the mossies, clearly hear them buzzing around. That storm was certainly destructive as storms go. Always good to know one survives with little damage to yourself & gear. nice sharing video.
Quite the trip! I was in a straight line wind situation in the BWCA a couple of years back. I survived unscathed but a couple of others in a different area of the wilderness were not so lucky and ended up passing away from injury. I’m glad you made it out! Great video. Matt G
Thanks Matt. Wind is one of the scariest things in canoe camping. Those big lakes in the Boundary Waters and Quetico take it up to another level. Stay safe - Martin
It was a very Moosey trip. Saw 2 on the drive up and 13 on the trip! Thanks for letting me know about the pictures.I just looked and see I have a bunch of pictures on Google Maps. I don't actually know how they go there? LOL
@@Martin_G damn 15 that's incredible actually. Do you own a google phone maybe? not sure why they would be on maps other than if you edited google maps yourself.
@@NatureBound None of those pics came from a phone. And they are 8-10 years old. I think they came from an old website called Panoramio that Google must have bought.
I was wind bound on Burnt Island Lake that same day. I had two kids with me so we stayed hunkered down for the day. Just watching the white cap waves moving on by.
Thanks, Martin, for a wonderful account of a memorable trip. Really nicely filmed. And all those moose, especially that one magnificent male in velvet. And , nothing like a close call on your own to get the juices flowing. Thanks, too, for putting it together so quickly. Makes it even more like being there in real time. Two thumbs up!! (Sorry, but that's all the thumbs I've got).
Great trip, thanks for bringing us along. Saw a good mix of familiar and new territory. Anyone else scroll through the comments looking for a comment from Bob saying "I told you so?" lol
Well done Martin! Really enjoyed watching. I took my son on this pretty much the same route (less Brule) some 17 years ago. We stayed on same site on Shaw and Ship and BT. Loved those sites.
Nice vid, I have had a few storms like that on a river trip - I setup my tent after the storm, lit my burner inside on low and let it heat up, then steam off... then inserted the sleeping bag, let it steam off, repeat for gear. Note, was not in the tent for this - not a good idea. Was a long crappy night, similar to your deal. Anyhow 2 thumbs up. Good thing I had extra fuel.
I was on Grassy Bay when the storm came through. It took down about 30 or 40 trees.... Not fun listening to the tree trunks breaking. I'm curious, what tent do you have? Thx
Love Big Trout but Ive had so many windy days there... Was out in the park at the same time during that storm, spent a good 3-4 hours wind bound semi setup at the end of a portage myself hehe, wind was pretty relentless. Enjoyed the video!
Hahah wow loved the storm experience. Rough trip, excellent video Martin. Your system/gear are very buttoned down---very impressive! Glad to see I'm not the only one dealing with the POS GoPro freezing.
I'm half way through the video, so my apologies if you've mentioned it or I missed it in the comments, but that's a great little tent, wondering what kind it is?
Thanks for taking us along! What Northstar were you paddling? Nevermind I backed up and found where you had said what one...I have the Phoenix and am so pleased with it over the last three years! Cheers-southwest Michigan
Hi Martin, I was in that wind on Daisy lake in a solo boat using a single blade paddle and it was scary. I noticed you use a kayak paddle on the bigger lakes, is it that more efficient? What kind of paddle do you use and how long is it?
A kayak paddle is more efficient. Especially when fighting a wind. Mine is a 240 cm Werner Kalliste Bent Shaft. Some people find 250cm or 260cm paddles are even better in solo canoes.
Nice video, usually the tripper is surprised to see a moose but I think the moose we're more surprised to see a human after the park being closed for so long. Looking at you like, hey buddy the park is closed.
@@Martin_G 11, that's crazy! I was in the park during that wind storm as well. I could've made some better tent decision too. Planning to put out a video on July 6. No santa tent bag but my own struggles as well.
Great video and trip account....we were windbound on Cauchon for 2 days- same time when you were on Burnt Island. can you confirm the full route you took? really looked nice.
Thanks Sean! My bug tent is a Eureka VCS. They dont make it any more. Eureka makes something called a No Bug Zone that you can get online or through most outdoor stores.
As a camping enthousiast myself I found your video quite enjoyable to watch. Except for the part where you handled trouts with your gloves and put them back in the water. Salmonids have a protective slim coating that prevent bacterial and fungal infections. Removing this slime can easily be fatal for the fish. One should always wet their bare hand first and handle the fish as little as possible if they plan on releasing it. Practice safe fishing and enjoy your future trips.
