Lost at Last... An Algonquin Canoe Story

Full Documentary of possibly, our favourite completed route through the heart of Algonquin Provincial Park. This is the complete story of our "Half Nipissing Loop" series.
We really wanted to make the original series into a single, documentary-style film, and to include some of the footage that we hadn't used in the series. This Algonquin park canoe trip takes us right through the heart of Algonquin, to the Nipissing River.
If you watched the original series, you will remember we encountered some difficulties along the way. With countless portages, that all seemed to be uphill, it was a trip to remember! Seeing some amazing wildlife, including moose, herons, loons and turtles all added to this canoe trip.
We decided to call this film "Lost at Last", which describes how we felt, returning to the backcountry for the first time after pandemic restrictions were lifted in Ontario, allowing us to camp. Finally! We were able to let loose in the great outdoors again!
We sincerely hope you enjoy the story in this documentary style format. As always, we would love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below!
Some kind people have reached out recently to ask how they can support us. Our honest answer is, if you enjoy our channel and would like to see more, please like, subscribe, and share! It truly makes a difference and means the world to us... Plenty more to come!

Disclaimer: We had to detour from our original plan on this trip, due to extremely low water levels. We felt this was the most sensible and safest decision. Some people have reached out to express some concern about this detour and the reservation system. This was the first day the park had reopened. It was incredibly quiet at that time. Before rerouting, we used our GPS device to contact a family member to check camping availability on other lakes. All lakes were completely open. We would never take a reserved campsite from a fellow camper, and we definitely wouldn’t want to encourage others to do that....Hope you guys enjoy the film!

One of the great beauties of a wilderness trip is responding to the environment. Good on you guys to check but even if you didn’t your well within the traditional to move through the landscape more favourable for travel. In a tent set up, your not bothering anybody even if you had to crash “their spot”. Anybody on here who throws you shade for doing it needs to get out an challenge themselves more

I’ve had to do exactly the same thing, you certainly went to the extra mile to ensure the lakes weren’t booked when you had to change your routing. well done!

We use to go camping up there almost every summer. We even did the portage at Lake of Two Rivers. At that time we would even drink the water right out of the lake. This would be in the early to mid 70's. Some great fishing up there. Thank you for bringing back a childhood memory.

Well done from a 69 y/o American who used to backpack, camp and boat....a lot. Now, I’m venturing farther from the cities and the insanity still cutting and splitting wood, building campfires and watching nature and the dark stary night in wonderment. Thanks for the trip.

Absolutely beautiful video! I've kayaked numerous rivers and lakes for most of my life and have always dreamed of paddling through Algonquin Park, but have reached a point in my life's journey where it's just not physically possible anymore. Being able to follow along with your journey thru this video helped me to feel like I was there in real time. The sound of the paddle in the water. The loons. The quietness of the lake. The rustle of the wind in the pines. Oh my... I can't thank you enough for this video!!

One can sure tell you two are very determined adventurers, because this video was one of where you seemed to carry the canoe as much as it carried you! but with the beauty of nature you experience enroute whether by water or land, I can understand why it would be worth it. One year, the only other humans (2) we met and said hello to turned out to be my brother in-laws grad students from Pittsburgh! The stories we could tell! Bears, Moose and other miscellaneous critters abounded! GPS was a futuristic dream. The bears probably still laugh at us listening to their ancestor's tales. Good Presentation. Wonderful v.log. I've done many adventures in my life across a spectrum of navigational modes. In 2005 I did my first PCT hike (one of a few). There was a AZDPCTKOP festival going on. The winner of the 'gear contest' was a person who had their PCT itinerary in hand and ripped it up. It was very symbolic of an adventure. The truest mark of a great adventurer is to create an itinerary... and then proceed to rip it up as you go along.

I totally agree. When things don’t go exactly to plan is when the real adventure begins. Would love to do the pct. Looks amazing. Thanks for the comment.

Beautiful video. I am aware of how much time it takes as a sidebar, much less t he quality of what you shared. On a side note of significance. I've been going to and travelled 3/4 of the park and had office job. I'm now 58 and having shoulder replacements. I also had a desk job and became deconditioned but went hard at it in beginning of May like I was in shape. It will cost you. Condition prior to trips or take it easy. Pushing in wind or steering wears more than you know. You are way to committed to the experience to risk not being able years later. Love your vids and hope you can continue for many many years. Wish I knew. Best to you both!

My first solo trip was at Algonquin. Came to the park with father, three sisters and one of them had brought a friend. Oh yeah,, like I REALLY wanna spend a week with four sisters. Almost immediately I noticed a small 10 foot aluminum canoe at the outfitters. Barely thicker than rolled tin foil, 28 pounds and faux painted birch bark on the outside. I traveled a portage route to the west from the southern tip of Lake Opiongo (sp?) that was supposed to be a five day trip. I kinda did an over achiever thing and completed in just more than three. I remember mosquitoes, clouds of them, horseflies in the upland forests, one HUGE bear,, who walked off disgustedly muttering, "There goes the neighborhood." Made lots of mistakes,, and then hitch hiked back to Lake O with the canoe. I think the second car by helped put the boat on top and took me back to camp,, and my sisters who hazed me for only being gone 3 days instead of 5. As sweaty and stinky as I was, I did not mind laying in the lake as my sisters played on the beach the next two days. 58 years ago. Just got back from Deso/Gray in Utah 86 miles of Class I to Class III, low water right now,, lotsa rocks,, boney. and these days, I don't shorten my trips,, I stay out as long as I can. Great video. Nice to see the park has changed so little in 60 years.

Really good narrative and well made shooting. Beautiful trip and well... 7 km of portage in rugged trail, Thats A LOT to do in a day. Even if your canoo is superlight as it looks to be, that is a hard days work, good job.

We really enjoyed the video, and the narrative. So jealous that you still get to see moose and animals with Betty-Lou and Hugo! We’ve yet to see a moose since we’ve been tripping with Emma.. we assumed the animals run when picking up her scent.. but it may also be that her canoe shifting can be noisy and we’re in a spell of bad luck. Hopefully next time! Awesome video!

Thanks guys. We have had a good year with seeing animals. Not sure if you happened to see our “Huron” video but we saw so many bears. We were always downwind from the animals though. It was interesting to see both the dogs and the bears trying to figure everything out with their noses 👃🏻. Hopefully you guys will get to see many moose and animals this coming canoe season.

Great job and great location, I've paddled the complete Nip river a few times as well as cutting up through to Maple...Used to stay at a cabin I call red camp, an old loggers cabin before it was refurbished and used as an Algonquin rental. Absolutely loved seeing all the moose along the river. We used to go in at Kearny and get picked up a week later in Brent the other side of Mattawa. Did it twice one year, 1st one in the park in the spring and last one out in the fall, now that was a good year lol
