That is comprehensive and a big help to those with these packs, I'm sure. Always nice to hear you explain things and that you're healthy enough to do it. You're deffinitely getting better. Good video, Bob.
Awesome tips! Can't beat an ALICE pack! Versatile, durable, affordable. Time and battle tested! The pals webbing is super strong to hold all those attachments!
Thanks bob, some great tips . I actually took my alice pack on my last trip, instead of my harness set. Take care bro and good to see you out there again.
Thanks sir! Modified my old Medium Pack and the Straps, and trying to make a Tropical Rucksack for my Vietnam Impression, until I get a real one, this has helped me a lot :)
No problem brother. In my personal opinion I think the Alice pack is one of the best made Military suplus packs .. As always think you so much for your comment and have a great weekend.
nicely done little vid, i did use to own one of the medium alice packs, i had to buy the frame & the waist strap from 2 different places,, but i did use youtube to find out how to assemble the kit, but your vid is far better than the ones i viewed at the time, glad to see your out & about again, have fun, be happy, toodle pip, barry

+Turtle Bushcraft thanks John. The ALICE pack really is great pack if you do all the mods to it. I think your wife will like it...when you get it done and she gives it a try please tell me what she thinks of it... As always thank you so much for your comment. Have a great week.
Hi Bob. Excellent information. I look forward to seeing your packs, in person, later this summer. Much to learn, on my part. Since I've been advised to carry no more than 15 (or maybe 20?) pounds on my back, I'm trying to figure out how to best doo this. Cheers, Ken
Opal Preston Shirley thank you Opal..the modifications really make the pack more user friendly. And are easy to do. Thanks for your comment brother have a great evening.
hoooray.....bob is back..i just received a message that u have uploaded a new video... welcome back my friend, hope u are fine now i was on tour with my alice pack last weekend...I had a great day in the woods...... will upload a vido soon greetings from overseas, harry
thank you brother I'm glad to be back in action.don't feel bad I I know what you're talking about I've done the same thing with some of my gear until I could find something I like.you can find the Molly 2 belts on Amazon for usually a fairly reasonable price with free shipping.
Bud glad to see your back out on the trail again. I need to get with you sometime and start hiking. Never really been hiking, just trail walking at times but not like you do it.
kobakgb thanks brother. I do recommend using the ALICE pack with a frame..you can carry a lot more weight and it does not hurt your back.yes I am a die hard ALICE pack user :-)
Bob..............Wd40 bob......lol. loved the vid. Very informative. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the next one. I posted those pics of the no cordage tarp shelter.
thank you ken. I try to be as formative as possible in my how to videos. sometimes I get my point across sometimes I don't.:) definitely cannot wait for our meet up. I like the pictures of you and Bob camping you uploaded to Facebook. looks like you guys had a good time. when I watched your contest drawing video it reminded me of playing marbles when I was younger. I had to look around see if I still had some but I didn't. thanks for stopping by and watching my video have a great evening
Thank you for posting the great video! I was going to sell my large, new L-1 but after watching your vid, it just became a keeper! I think I will set it up for an emergency bugout bag,. You never know...
I'll be honest with you when I first received my ALICE pack. I didn't use it much.but after one of the straps on my Kelty broke..I had no choice but to grab the ALICE pack for a 3 day 2 night trek. After using it for the first mile and getting it dialed incorrectly. I didn't even notice I was wearing it. It is now my go too pack...I wouldn't trade it for the world brother. Thank you so much for your comment.
Hi I just wanted to say thanks for the video. Ive tried all manner of packs but keep coming back to alice. I mean i like molle better yet ive had more loose threads in molle packs in one week than ever in my alice in a whole year. As for durability ive got to keep the pack I know will keep going. For what its worth if you can grab the straps from a gi molle medic pack and the bottom tail straps to a gi molle assault pack you can make an amazing pair of straps for the alice pack. Its expensive and similar to the upgraded woodland alice straps but much more comfortable.
+Dee “Danielle Reed” . Ghost I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the tip about the straps. I have to give that a try if I can find them on Amazon for cheap...as always thank you so much for your comment and have a great day.
Great video Bob. I never thought about attaching the Molle waist belt to the ALICE when I'm not using a frame. Thanks for sharing. Been working on trying to perfect my medium Alice (w/frame) for about 3 yrs. now. I did the "Hellcat" mod to mine. I think I'm getting there LOL.
Thanks Jeff.. I have yet to make the hellcat mod to my Alice pack.. I forsee me doing it in the near future though.. Went you add the Molly two waste belt you'll find it distributes the weight much better than the LC2 belt the comes with the pack.. Well at least I did... Thank you so much for your comment and have a great evening..
Yeah, I find the Molle waist belt much more comfortable too and also the Molle shoulder straps . Now I just have to figure out where I'm going to put my tent. I added the sleep carrier system to the bottom of the pack which holds my sleeping bag. I have my inflating mattress inside and bottom of the main pack. Not sure whether to put my tent on the bottom of the pack? the sleep system bag is kind of in the way. Or, to put the tent on top of the pack under the main flap?? any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks. Take care.
Hey Jeff what sleep carry system are you using? In the summer months I put my thermal rest on the top of the pack and my tent and fleece blanket on the bottom... In the Winter I attach my sleep carry system on the bottom... Then put my tent on top of it and my thermal rest on top..
a 1 man backpacking tent makes a nice emergency shelter, takes up less space & is lighter in weight~ Just a thought~ A nice backpacking hammock w a fly is awesome as well~
thanks brother. you're more than welcome to come out on the trail with me. its always nice to have somebody with you. Thanks for swinging by and leaving a comment.
Lol yes my table has the squeaks. I'm so used to it I don't even hear it anymore. Lol. ..you be surprised on how much Molly stuff you can fit on a ALICE pack.I really was.thank you for the comment brother I really appreciate it
Thank you for the video Brotha! I just recently got the frame for my old medium ALICE pack and I love it!! I think I'm gonna deck it out now so would it be ok to ask you for advice on what works and what don't? You seem to know your stuff! img.photobucket.com/albums/v672/buddah101/another%20Album/DSCF9928_zps8c40e0c8.jpg
The venerable ALICE pack is one versatile pack and can modified in any number of ways to suit the person that's wearing. I did the wildcat mod on mine and am going to fix it so I can attach the molle sleep system carrier on the bottom of it. Some dog on this pack but I don't get why. Its stood the test of time. This is 40 year old technology and it still rocks. Great video, and you have given me some ideas. How did you install the extra snaps? Thanks!
Thanks Mr. Bob!!!! My brother got me an ALICE pack for camping shenanigans and I didn't know how to set it up till I watched this video! Thank you!!!!! But I am curious how you put the Velcro for the right side for the machete.
+Mike Taylor cool Mike I'm glad my video can help you out.I wrap the velcro around the machete and the frame of the pack...I used three pieces of Velcro just to make sure it would stay on the pack..if you have anymore questions about the pack please feel free to ask. ...And thank you so much for your comment I do appreciate it.
thank you John. I try to be informative on my how to videos. I'm feeling a lot better now. the fatigue is finally going away thank God. I see the doctor next Monday . hopefully he will release me to go back out into the wild. of course I won't tell him that I did six mile hike :-). thanks for the comment John I really appreciate it
Thanks brother. I bet it makes a Excellent frame for the Ghostbusters proton pack.. too bad you couldn't upload pictures to the comment section. I wouldn't mind seeing it. Yes I'm a big fan of the Ghostbusters. The original movie not the remake..
i found 2 sternums to put on the front of my two alice packs. one of them is on a frame. they really help to keep the pack from moving around and help to secure it and stay in place.
thanks Bill. for small day hikes I've been using my patrol pack and it's working out great. but I still use the ALICE pack on a distance hike. mostly because I carry a lot of water. thanks for the comment bill have a great evening
Thanks for the video and sorry if it’s been too long since the video came out but I have one question. There are metal D rings down at the bottom sides of the medium pack. I didn’t see you use them when attaching the shoulder straps or the side belt/strap to the frame. What are these used for?
Hi Sarah that is a good question.. The D rings at the bottom are for when you remove the frame...You can attach the shoulder straps and part of the waist belt to them... I'm glad you enjoyed the video...Yes it's been a while since I released it but I always try to answer every comment. Sometimes it just takes me awhile :-) have a great day...
I just found your channel and Sub'ed to it. I'm fixing to buy an Alice pack but not sure which one I want or need. I was going to get a Large Alice pack but now, I think I should get an Midsize or Medium one now. (I just had Open Heart Surgery back in June of this year) so I don't want to over do it, I want to be able to carry around 35 lbs. on my back. I want it for a "When the Crap Hits the Fan Bag". Any suggestions would be really great. Also, I Liked your video, except the "Squeaking" table I think it was. he-he. ;)
Everything it just getting a first aid pouch and put in the compass in that and attach it to the shoulder strap besides it'll also help protect the compass keep it from getting all beat up
I don't have the top rings on my Alice pack to attach the shoulder straps and It doesn't appear there were ever any. It's a large Alice, should there be some and am I just screwed is I want to go frameless?
no problem Karen . I'm sorry it took me so long to get the video up. I am feeling much better thank you for asking. I'm pretty sure I have the links to where I bought the straps on Amazon on my Facebook page. you might have to scroll down a little bit to find them though. I'm glad I could give you ideas on your pack. when you get your pack all setup I really love to see a video of it. have a great evening Karen if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.
I'm glad you enjoy the video. You can find the straps on Amazon. Unfortunately G+ won't let me post a link. Just search replacement straps for the Alice pack. You want to get the upgrade straps. Not the LC 2 or 4
i got a large alice, the little loops(or clips, as they're called in the vid) that are behind the cushion at the top were missing for some reason, so i made my own.
Mmmm I wonder why they were missing. Of course there is nothing wrong with making your own. Thank you for your comment brother and have a great evening...
hi harry. I'm glad to be back. I can't wait to see your video on your tour with the ALICE pack. if you do me a favor make sure you send me an email when you upload your video. that way I can be the first to watch it :-). thanks for your comment brother
thank you brother. I've always wanted to get a large size ALICE pack. I see him on Amazon every once in awhile. but they want a little bit too much money for them. I had to upgrade my waist belt because the original waist belt just wasn't working out from me. the darn thing kept sliding off lol I am interested in your modifications though. do you have a video of them? or if you want you're more than welcome to upload pictures to my facebook page. thanks for the comment brother
thank you brother. I know what you mean I've watched How To videos and went what the heck is he talking about.lol so that's why I try to give as much information as possible when I do my how to videos. I know sometimes I overdo it. but I don't want if you're scratching his head wonder huh.lol. I am so glad to be out and about again. I was going stir crazy. thanks for the comment my friend have a great evening.
One thing you did neglect is one climbing rated carabiner that way if you had to link ropes together to go down a hundred foot cliff with other people or be extracted by a helicopter without falling from the Rope
You absolutely can but I don't recommend putting a lot of weight in a pack. It'll be rough on your back as your hiking. As always thank you so much for your comment and have a great evening
That's an excellent question. And I have an answer for you and fortunately there will be some sewing involved. What you want to do is head to Walmart go to the Sporting Goods department and head for the camping section and pick up some nylon straps. They're only a couple of dollars. Next you want to find either D-Rings or O-rings make sure they're medium to heavy duty. Usually you have to go to a hobby store for those. Are also a couple dollars I think they come in packs of 4. Now the fun part. You want to sew loops on where the shoulder straps would normally attached. Of course add your D rings or o-rings. Make sure you put a backing on the loop just for some extra reinforcements.. You want to use a zig-zag stitch. With heavy duty thread... I hope that answered your question if you have anymore please feel free to ask. As always thank you so much for your comment and have a great evening my friend.
please don't own a large frame ALICE pack. If you could do me a big favor and have the time take some pictures of it and upload it to my facebook page and I'll take a look at it. But it is odd that it doesn't have a attachment rings on the top of the pack.
bro i still have my alice pack lol from 4 years ago . if you still have yours i notice that there 3 pair of paracord right next to the drain hole. and buttom of 3 d rings behind radio pouch . that can be used and converted as 3 day assult pack, per fer to use it as regular back pack. lol i got me a 3rd alice . reverse your alice pack and its all there. if you still have your alice pack, my 3rd alice has it. give it a try
That's awesome. Yep I still have alice. I have the one on the frame and a camera one without the frame. I do not know that. I'll check it out when I look at mine next. Thanks for the heads up brother
Should I buy an ALICE Pack with the straps and frame or without? I'm going to use it as a "survival pack" so I will be carrying it for extended amounts of time and with a good amount weight. What is your opinion on what I should do?
Ḭ̷͌ ̵͈͊L̶̟̈i̷̠̔k̵̬͑ė̵̹ ̴͙͗T̵̟̊u̴̖̓r̵̆͜t̶̊͜l̶̙͝e̶̡͛s̷̢̆ that's a really good question. I would buy the ALICE pack with a frame especially if you're going to carry a heavy load. Definitely switch the straps and waist belt out go to the upgraded version...talk a little bit about weight how much are you expecting that carries. Recently I did a trip with my pack was loaded between 50 and 60 pounds I did a lot of modifikation to mine in order to carry that much weight. If you don't want to make a lot of modifications I would check into a Molly 2. ..they are rated to hold over a hundred pounds. Which I really don't think anybody is going to carry that much weight....I really hope this answers your question if you have any more feel free to ask.
Bob808Knight . Ok thank you. I might have a few more questions later on but I will definitely go and research a Molly 2. But I am also wanting something that is pretty cheep, like under $70 and can carry bulk not just weight.
BuckWheat you should definitely use the frame because it puts the weight on your legs and its lighter its not hard on your back and you can carry as much weight as your legs can hold
Hi Richard... Honestly I do not know I have never tried.. I wash mine with the hose and some very light detergent... I'm thinking if you put it in a washer then the dryer there is chance you could damage the threads...
I hate him was trying to figure out how to put the bottom straps on mind you it’s been over 20 years since I used one and I see how easy it was and then self says are you having a dah moment told self to mind his business of course I had to put there 2 cents in yup felt like a dumb ass anyway thanks for the refresher course
Hi Phillip.. You can get the Alice clips off of Amazon.. If I remember correctly they come in a 5 pack and they are fairly cheap... As always thank you so much for your comment and happy New Year...
Understandable.. There's always another option.. You can make a frame out of PVC pipe.. I have done that and I'm still working out the bugs but so far I like it.. As always thank you so much for your comment and have a great day my friend.
