@@ksavage681 Event Horizon took inspiration from Alien and a whole bunch of other films in the horror / scifi genres. It's not really on the same level.
Still think Jones should have been offered a best supporting actor Oscar. His performance in the first attack was superb. Sir Ian Holm was just amazing and had everyone fooled until his head came off. Greatest horror film of all time.
Jones the cat> Hey alien dude, I've got a business proposition for ya. How about eliminating these humans so we can take the ship and sell the ore ourselves. We split it 60/40. I'll play innocent and warn you what the humans are planning. Alien> You're the boss. Ok, you hide down here and I'll be up there. Here's one of them coming now.
Alien is a perfect horror movie in that you're scared before the scary shit starts happening. And unlike slasher movie that can be hammy and cheesy and just too much, this movie plays on something much more severe. Atmosphere and tension. It's what makes horror games so do good.
The Exorcist, The Howling, Dawn of the Dead, The Shining, and Alien. The 70s and very early 80s had some really GREAT horror movies. Now, everything is just predictable.
And I said somewhere else now that she’s watched this, she must complete the trifecta and watch Predator and John Carpenter’s The Thing. For the latter she may want to bring a friend to watch with and she’d still have nightmares. But the reaction would be priceless.
@@puckarine Honestly would love for her to watch it alone, in the dark. Feel like that would give you the most genuine reaction. The Thing is amazing. Have you seen the remake as well? The Evil Dead would be a good movie to watch as well. So creepy, yet corny all at once.
@@c.t.1893 you mean the one in 2011? I haven’t seen it, but I hear it was a prequel rather than a remake, so it’s not off the table. But given what she said here, if we want her to give a straight up horror movie a chance, she may have to do it on her terms. Maybe she has another jumpy friend who also hasn’t seen it. Also maybe let her get in a few happy ones first, so she doesn’t get desensitized too soon.
Alien is one of the most perfect movies ever made. Perfect cast, perfect direction, perfect story, perfect score, etc... No CGI. Very hard to find flaws in it. And it's still good after all these years. BTW, when the alien explodes out of Kane, Veronica Cartwright's (Lambert) reaction was authentic, she wasn't acting. A pressure line that sprayed blood shot blood right into her face and she legitimately freaked. I loved her character because her fear seems so real. Fantastic performance by everyone.
An interesting fact about Lambert’s death and the nature of what took place, the subject of where the aliens tail was going has always been one people wondered about. Turns out if you watch the second movie and view closely at Lambert’s file, you’ll discover she was transgender. The alien you can learn from various media has no eyes and relies on scent and sound fro most of its sensory skills when killing. People have wondered why the alien violated Lambert the way it did and some fans theorize that it sensed Lambert was different and the mutilation of her genital area may confirm the alien was interested in her anatomy and why she was unique compared to its other victims. This is just a fan theory but terrifying to think of.
@@shanelogan630 Oh BULLSH**! Ridley Scott stated that both Ripley and Lambert were both originally cast as males, but decided to make them both females later on in the casting. Lambert was a female, period. Do I need to explain what a female is to you? Trans-whatever was not a thing till five minutes ago. It wasn't even a word in 1979. What James Cameron wrote in her file in 1986 was just to make the character interesting. They were goofing around. Ridley Scott himself has stated on camera that Lambert was sexually violated because she was a female. He raised the question of whether aliens have sexual urges. He said those exact words. The alien had grown inside a male.
There had been some really great horror films before, but this just took things to a whole new level. HR Geiger's designs were spooky as hell and truly alien feeling. Masterful use of long slow shots. Just a masterclass in horror.

Ikr 😆 she clearly had no clue what she was getting into, a feeling many people have when watching this the first time. Easily Ridley Scott's greatest masterpiece
Is the scary part over???? Repear throughout the movie. The cat represents pure evil. 1) Runs away, causing a crew member to look for it. Death ensues. Cat crouches under something and watches. Close up on those pitiless cat like eyes. 2) Ripley tries to escape in the pod and blow up 5he ship with the Alien left behind, but cat runs away and Ripley is forced to look for it, giving time for the Alien to get to the escape pod and hide. Hilarity ensues. 3) cat escapes hibernation chamber, resets navigation controls, therefore escape pod takes years to return, Ripley's daughter dies of old age. 4) Before going back to hibernation, cat takes a large dump in Ripley's chamber, causing Ripley unending nightmares on the way home. I will admit reasons 3 an 4 are speculative in nature, but as logical as this movie is.
Your comment, "Why is she going after the cat?....Have we not learned in every movie not to do this..." Remember, this is 1979 and this is the movie we learned it from 🤣🤣
To be fair, the scene in Signs where they're hiding in the basement is pretty damn creepy. I think that's the only time I had difficulty sleeping after seeing a movie. (Alien doesn't count; I was having nightmares about it years before I was old enough to see it.)
And the "stupid robot" ASH was not stupid. He was following orders to bring the Alien back to corporate for analysis (and profit) even if the Alien kills the entire human crew.
Let’s be honest: this was Dan O’Bannon’s baby. Same guy who wrote and directed The Return of the Living Dead(1985), and wrote Total Recall (1990). Those are two gems you could watch with your sister if you haven’t reacted to them yet.
@@thedeepfriar745 I know that opinions vary on that, but personally I think he ruined his own legacy just as much. Admittedly, I haven't seen Covenant, but that's because I found Prometheus to be such an awful movie I had no desire to watch the next one.

My uncle was the special effects director for this movie. I always love when people discover his work. This is where he got the first of his 4 Oscar nominations although he only won 1 Oscar his other films are a lot less scary.
Oh wow your uncle KILLED IT on this movie, the special effects are out of this world good. I hadn't seen the movie in a long time and seeing it during this reaction really had me gasping in shock in some places because of how REAL everything looked. The face-hugger to me is still probably THE greatest practical effect of all time. It looks like a true organic creature.
Jon please thank your uncle for having a huge part in showing me a movie that I would never forget. I watched it at the Cinema and from the first minute of the opening credits to the final fade out I was totally immersed. The special effects along with the cinematography and direction made this completely unbelievable movie very very real. Tell him that if we ever meet I owe him a beer.
This film was released when I was 12. A friend and I went to see it, the plan was to camp out in our fort in the woods nearby afterwards. When his mother picked us up she asked, " Are you still going to camp out?" We immediately began yelling " No way!!! "

I don’t really like the term jump scares when applied to these films, because typically what constitutes something frightening you suddenly in these films is actually scary. There’s only a few fake outs, like with the cat.
@@nickmanzo8459 There's at least 3 good ones in the film, (Dallas knocking over the trays, and 2 involving the cat) but, yes, I totally agree, the amount of tension generated as the film grinds towards its climax is off the dial even for a modern film, let alone one that's 40-odd years old...
The Shining 1980 rules them all. It's total mind*uck of a movie. It could not get better then an evil sinister presence hidden between the walls of the Overlook hotel which slowly corrupts Jack Torrance.
The first time I seen Alien, I was 15. I snuck out of the house with two friends. When the movie was over the buses where done running for the night. The three of us had to walk home in the dark about 5 miles. On that journey we had to go through a large hobo area, in a railroad yard. To this day, that was the most terrifying walk in my life.
Awesome but I can top that (maybe). I was maybe 12 and saw the first Terror on Elm Street. Then I had to walk home alone. I come out and there is a thick fog with rays from the lights just like in the dreams. For a section I also had to walk through the forest. That was scary.
@@Hiraghm And Jaws was basically the proof of concept for not showing the monster much in movies that followed it like in this. A happy accident due to technical issues with the mechanical shark.
It’s a testament of how good the film is! - 40 years later, the viewer gets drawn into its world, hooked by the story and score and still shocking people to this today - No CGI effects, all in-camera! - No wonder it’s considered THE seminal Sci-Fi film 😀👍👍 (the thing a very close second)
Yes, your right to a degree - The Thing was based on a 1951 movie called “The Thing From Another World” which itself was based on a 1938 novella called “Who Goes There?”
@@jimmyc3755 it’s the difference between a suspenseful, nuanced, sci-fi horror thriller and an all out sci-fi horror action movie. I like both very much, but Alien is a much cleverer movie in concept and execution... Aliens is a great action movie but not particularly “deep”.
@@jimmyc3755 Alien has a strong subtext of body-horror, body-integritity, sexuality, male pregnancy etc... whereas Aliens is basically a Vietnam film in space (with underlying themes of motherhood). It's just different. That's what I like about them.
Even though sequels were made, I still think the original film is the best. Especially because it is so small-scale (as you've said, just a single spaceship) and very grounded. An ordinary crew facing an utterly vile, extraordinary monstrosity. Sigourney Weaver was the unknown newcomer in the cast back when this premiered in 1979, so her being the last survivor was actually meant as a surprise ending for the audience. :-)

I first started watching Aliens when I was 14. Alone in the house in already dark winter early evening. Was holding and pushing myself in the chair up until Bishop crawling that small tube for the antenna and then I just turned the thing off, was too scary. Watched many times fully when 18+ years, but I will remember that first time forever.
The facehugger has disappeared, and the crew don't know where it is. Cassie: "Oh, you guys, there's a baby alien wondering about!" Everyone: Err... it's _so_ much worse than that....
"I´m hoping that it´s not too scary." - Well, there is that famous scene, where they are all sitting at a table eating, someone says "What´s the matter? The food ain´t that bad Baby." - And then ...
Honestly the best reaction I've seen of Alien as of far. It was priceless, just for the innocence of the total reaction. Sleep tight and don't let the aliens bite.
Such a legendary film. This movie was a landmark in filmmaking history because the major studios that produced the movies and put them in theaters didn’t believe Sci-Fi could be scary. As you experienced, it’s literally one of the scariest movies of all time! Even in the 2020’s, the movie holds up relatively well for a movie made in the 70’s!
When my little sister was 9 years old I paid her $10 to watch this with me. She made it to the scene where they're trying to get the facehugger off and it tightens around Kane's neck. She threw the money at me and ran upstairs lol

"It's like having a mouse in your room and not being able to leave... but like a thousand times worse." I think that was what Ridley Scott was aiming for when he made the film, so absolutely nailed it 😆
The scariest part of this film to me is when Dallas is in the ducts, specifically when he starts to lose his cool and panic and just wants to get back out. It's understated panic and you can see it building.
I'll drink to that, that was one of the movie's most claustrophobic, nerve-wracking scenes..... "It's moving toward you, get out of there! NOOO! Not that way, the other way!"
"The scariest movies I've seen is Signs, and I Am Legend." After Alien, I feel that she should see a family movie with a nice, calm and heart warming plot and a strong Christian theme: The Exorcist. PS its funny that people think that strong female characters are a new think....Ripley started to kick ass over 40 years ago.

@@ephennell4ever Yeah, I was kind of expecting something like that myself. But kudos to this young lady for sticking it out until the end - the most suspenseful, nervous-system-destructive movie ever made.

I wonder about the sequels, but Alien has a slower build-up to the Finale compared to the more action filled sequels. I recommend to skip Event Horizon.
THIS is how you make and portray a strong female character. Whenever people say that we need more strong female leads I always revert back to Alien, T2, Xena and many others.
Ripley cant be compared with T2 (Sarah Connor) and Xena ; maybe with the Sarah Connor of T1. Ripley isnt a ''hero'' , or ''strong'' by definition. She is only a ''deliverer'' of cargo. All of the crewmembers were only kind of ''truck-drivers of the future''. They weren't super strong, or super smart. They were guys like you and me - average guys... dirty... just minding their own small lifes .Thats why we can relate so much to these characters. Ripley didnt really 'fought' this monster (at least not in Alien 1). She ran away... she was scared like hell (like all of us, and like all the crew members). And when she shoot in the end to the Alien it was much more a reflex ..as well when she opened the hatch in a moment of ''scared movement'' ... It was sheer luck , that her instincts lead to 'win' that thing. All the others had also their survival instincts but because of the circumstances they losed their lives. Ripley was aware of that,... She only tried to survive... thats all. There was no ''smart'' plan... The whole movie was about ''panicing'' and ''losing the mind'' in front of a superior creature. Thats total different to Xena or Sarah Connor (T2). Sarah Connor (T2) is very focused and even protective about her son - she is a lion , with muscles, and weapons. Same goes for Xena. Those are heros , like Wonderwoman, etc .... Ripley (Alien 1) was intelligent, but also very female , and just with her own small life. I like her that way ... And Aliens (second part) portrays her much more like a hero... When she burns the eggs even if she dont have too. She isnt really afraid anymore ... instead she provokes the Alien Queen ''come, fight me''... Its the typical action movie... And thats the reason, why Alien (1979) still has his unique charme - because its not like every other ''Alien-Action''-movie , or ''Hero-action-movie'' ... Its a kind of its own...
@@PygmalionFaciebat Because she developed as a character and she was still afraid as hell in the beginning, and everyone would piss their pants in the same situation, man or woman. Ripley was inherently stronger than Sarah connor, she was a Lieutenant and second in command in the Nostromo, military or not she was still trained in the basics. Sarah was just an ordinary young woman working as a waitress with no training and facing something that was superior but at the same time not beyond "familiarity" It is also unreasonable to compare any of them to Xena considering she was a warrior princess.
@@DarknessIsThePath Yes i think you are right. Ripley is probably comparable with a crew-member of a cargo-ship today. She probably had some basic background about dangerous situations , in fact she had to be familiar with selfdestruction protocolls , decompression failures, handling a space suit, navigation, quarantene protocolls, etc etc.. As you pointed it out correct: Sarah was in that sense ''naked'' .. she was 16 (according to the movie), and had the most ordinary job possible. She also mentioned she even struggles to manage the balance on her credit cards - and she seems to live with her girlfriend in the same apartment. She really had to grow from scratch. And yes - she is definetely not comparable with Xena , a warrior princess.
I saw this movie at the theater back when it came out in 1979. The screams from the audience were real for sure and my girl friend almost squeezed my arm off. Many times especially during the chest burster scene.

Yeah, not gonna lie, I felt uncomfortable for her. lol I am impressed we didn't see several jump cuts with clear signs the video was shot over the course of multiple days. lol
For some light and very funny comedy I would suggest "My Cousin Vinnie" with Joe Pesci from 1982. Edit and correction: The film is from 1992 not 1982. Sorry, was a typo, "8" instead of "9" *sigh*.
Wow, that's probably one of the most dramatic, yet real reactions I've ever seen to someone watching my favourite movie of all time, definitely leaving a like :)

@@muhest Your right. The Alien is a truckers in space haunted house horror movie.Scared the shit out of me as a kid. I think of Aliens(director's cut) as the perfect science fiction film. @@muhest The brilliance of Aliens is it didn't re-do Alien. Every horror movie gets progressively less scary. Seeing the alien for the first time is scary. Seeing it for the 100th time? Not scary! The reason Ash is an android is so that the alien doesn't infect and kill him. This is to ensure there is someone who can survive and oversee the ship throughout its journey back. All the other crew are essentially food to keep the alien alive while it's transported back to earth.
This implies that the company already knew about the alien prior to getting the warning signal and purposely sent the crew, which isn't the case and has never been established as such.
@@caribbeanman3379 Ash being an android has nothing to do with the alien. They are returning from their work voyage when they encounter the signal. @@JohnSmith-jn7nc I actually get it more than most people; I understand what Kubrick was trying to get across and it was incompetent. He made a psychological thriller about cabin fever from a book which states multiple times, directly, that what is happening is not psychological at all but actually malevolent action by the Overlook itself. Kubrick always felt himself superior to the material he worked with but actually never was. His technical brilliance tends to overshadow the fact that he frequently failed to do the stories justice.
