21:18, These folks are basically a crew of cargo haulers not explorers. But they got set up by their own company to get one of these things. Their company Weyland-Yutani has known about these things for a long long long time. I wouldn't be surprised if every ship in their fleet has these orders embedded in their Mother system. But the crews on those ships don’t know about it

Number one thing is you have to watch the sequel, "Aliens." It's one of the best sequels of the time. The other thing about this movie is that it had the best marketing I've seen of a premiere. When the movie was first advertised, all they showed was the alien egg opening in the darkness. I don't remember seeing clips before the first week of showing so no one knew what to expect. That shows faith in your work. Also, when the thing burst from the guys stomach, all of those reactions were genuine. The cast didn't know what was going to happen, 👍, great stuff. 🖖😎👍

The directors cut wasn’t necessary for this movie, but it is important for the sequel “Aliens”, otherwise you’ll have lots of questions. (Do not ever watch Alien 3). For the rest of Alien and Predator movies, just watch order of release, and it’ll make sense. At least Predator, Predator 2, and Predators. Then into Alien bs Predator.

30:35, I've heard that in the original script Ripley didn't survive. The alien managed to evade her harpoon shot then flings itself back onto the lifeboat. It then punches through Ripley's helmet and ends her in a really gruesome fashion. In this final shot to show how it had evolved, the alien sends out the distress message in Captain Dallas's voice. But they decided nobody wanted such a bummer of an ending.

In 2002, Director Sir Ridley Scott and his brother Tony were among the executive producers of The Gathering Storm, a television biographical film of Winston Churchill in the years just prior to World War II. In 1984, Ridley Scott directed a big-budget ($900,000) television commercial, "1984", to launch Apple Computer's Macintosh computer. After graduation in 1963, he secured a job as a trainee set designer with the BBC. Filmed at Shepperton Studios in England, Alien was the sixth highest-grossing film of 1979, earning over $104 million worldwide. Wikipedia.

Watching a grown man get terrified over a movie I have loved since I was ten years old was really entertaining. 🤣This movie is truly a masterpiece: the set designs, the practical effects, the beautiful concept art by HR Giger that inspired the movies (highly recommend checking his work out if you enjoy the aesthetics of this movie), and of course the badass that is Sigourney Weaver. Thanks!

Alien and Aliens are classic, iconic and terrific, very different but equally good. I prefer the theatrical versions.
@DW-lx9wt
@DW-lx9wt 2 месяца назад
First and foremost its a brilliant sci-fi with elements of horror. I think this film being tagged as a horror does it a dis-service in some ways. People found it scary, yes. That wasn't its main point though, it's really just a sci-fi and space/the unknown itself is scary. It's a totally different beast compared to something like The Thing which is a true sci-fi horror on both levels where the horror is the main theme and the sci-fi just facilitates that. Alien is just so well done and made that it's believable, keeping the tension high. I also kind of think first time watching while reacting ruins the real experience of a lot of films or not seeing them in a cinema/solo. Immersion is a key factor for a lot of good films.

How can you not have seen Alien? It's a fantastic but incredibly derivative film that steals from here, there and everywhere but its power is in its presentation. Fox should be congratulated because after their executives flew back and forth to London for Star Wars they found themselves doing it again for Alien wondering if they should put in more money. It all worked out in the end but it was touch and go. It's a classic.

4:40, because of gravity and this planet may be bigger than Earth. A lot of popular science fiction like Star Trek and Star Wars tends to hand wave how much energy and fuel is needed to heave a lot of mass into orbit. Think about how big rockets are right now to reach escape velocity. Also they are bringing down the whole crew, life support, food, supplies that takes a lot of room which means more mass and more energy to move it about. This movie supposedly only takes place 98 years from now in the year 2122. I never got the impression that the level of technology in the alien movies was anywhere near the level of ST or SW.

This is my favorite movies series. I saw it in theatres in 79. It scared the hell out of everyone. The only more scary movie is Exorcist "73. The set is all real no CGI. These guys are just future truck drivers hauling the big cargo of minerals, hence their poor decision making. Did you know Signory Weaver was originally cast for the role of ""Lambert"" and Veronica Cartwright was cast for "RIPLEY". Like one day before the filming began Director Ridley Scott switched their roles. I often wonder how the series would have gone if the switch wasnt made. If your going to watch more of the movies in the series I will STRONGLY SUGGEST you watch PROMETHEUS next. It it the pre-quel to this movie, even though it's made later. THEN watch the sequel ALIENS. i tell every RU-vidr reaction maker to do this but no one does. It really will tell you more about the series. You do NOT have the most jumpy reaction maker. That role is taken by Jay of" EOM REACTS .This movie was his very first reaction and that boy needs a seatbelt for his chair. OMG. Check out his reaction. Another reaction maker to this movie which I thought was well done is by DEVIN G...make sure it only Devin and not the second one with his wife. For a good female perspective check out DASHA REACTS. I'd like to see a little better capture of the key lines. You missed a lot. OK Onto Prometheus, then Aliens! As for the rest of the movies in the series i think they are junk. other fans will say different.

I hope the trailer is an accurate representation, because that tight, claustrophobic feeling really comes through. I didn't feel trapped when watching Alien, but it was thrilling. I was 17 when I took my two younger brothers (14 and 11) to see this movie in the theater. It was scary in the theaters on the large screen. But what horrified my 14 year brother most of all was Sigourney Weaver's lack of ass. My brother grabbed my arm, whispered my name, and point out that "she's got no butt!" Then he asked me "Do all white women have no butt?" My whispered answer was "I don't know. I don't go around looking at white women's butts." Needless to say, he's been married to his African American queen for over 27 years.

Not too far in, but already hating the director's cut because what's left is dialog that just doesn't add a lot. And the theater release is so much tighter that I think the directors cut undermines the suspense, and it also undercuts Ripley's bad assery.

This is a great comment. I was wondering what was left out in the original cut.

@@Syntell To be fair, it is just my opinion, so I hope someone else will comment on why they like the DC. I saw the original in the theater and every re-watch was with the theater release. Sometimes the DC is good, but artists (and writers) really need editors. I've done both, and I cherished my editors and I like constructive critiques. We tend to fall in love with our work and it's not always the best choice for a work.

Yes continue and genuinely, goddamn it, but did this one make me laugh out loud. It's a scary film and you did well to make it through it.

I'm not sure that being terrifying or not terrifying is the metric to define whether something fits in the horror genre, hence schlock horror which is comedic yet still fits in the genre. In the broader sense of the definition, horror has to do with the (typically violent) transgression of human norms and sensibilities which induces feelings of disgust or extreme discomfort from both a moral and personal standpoint. I would say that the psycho-sexual violence in the implied violation of Lambert, the connotations of oral rape in the impregnation of Kane, the discomforting notion of "male birthing" in the chest burster scene, the notion of the penetrability of male characters...i.e. from the alien's perspective male characters are viewed as potentially feminine hosts...these are highly transgressive, uncomfortable and violent notions which place the film well within the horror genre. To reduce the discussion to whether the film is scary or not and make that stand in for the discussion of whether the film is a horror film or nay is just skimming the surface.

This movie along with another from around that time coupled with my having 3 siblings older than me (by 8,7,& 5) years got me in a bit of trouble in the 3rd grade. I would grill them to tell me every detail of these rated R SCARY movies when they would come home. I mean my mom naturally would not let a kid of 8 go see them. My teacher assigned us a Halloween story contest for a full-size candy bar of our choice. A big thing for ones with little to no pocket money back before it was available for kids to just pig out on the crap all the time like 40 years later. Anyway, I stole the organic material slime-dripping hallways from this and the final boss character using a fire ax to behead the bad guy on the school's performance stage. This was from a slasher movie and I also stole the head rolling across the stage in it. Well, my teacher read this and called my mom in for a conference to see if this 8-year-old girl needed to go to see a shrink. Mom was like, " well no she just has an overactive imagination and older brothers and sister that are going to be meeting me about NOT telling her about the movies. No matter how much she begs them to." I was very lucky not to have earned a 72-Hold for that little practice in plagiarism. Kids (especially the spoiled baby sister who has the others wrapped around her finger) are the only thing scarier than the aliens int his movie.

I was gonna say express shock and awe, and disappointment in you because it seemed the title implied YOU had not seen the film. And as a fellow geek (even a bigger geek than I) that's tantamount to sacrilege.

Let's look at it from the aliens point of view. He was just born surrounded by aliens one threatened to kill him holding a weapon. Then the humans came at it with weapons and nets. Then flame throwers. With that the alien realized these monsters wouldn't stop until he was dead so he rightly goes on the offensive to end the threat. This was self defense. The big chap did nothing wrong!
