After rewatching the quadrilogy again I actually think this is the best one from character development, even Ripley peaks as character feeling like a veteran but also being absolutely devastated from loss. The special effects hold up and the acting is excellent. The horror element really stand out and the dirty 90s visuals just blend well. I love the first two but they have aged alot.
Take your most favorite movie that was also a critical and financial success and use it as your barometer for this film. Sometimes the leftover puzzle pieces in Hollywood marred by studio interference does not always make for a cohesive narrative.
I don’t hate it, I just think it’s a bit rough around the edges. Much of it is the theatrical cut cutting many scenes that really fleshed out some beats and the lack of them left the film feeling a bit uneven, especially when the remaining scenes make less sense without the excised scenes. The uncut version fixes many of those issues but it still feels a bit off. I believe that’s because of the script issues and the producers interference.
I loved it when I saw it in the theatre at the time. I think Fincher saved it, personally. Almost nobody else could make a watchable film with that script.
Killing Hicks, Newt AND RIPLEY completely turned me off to Alien 3. What was the point of having them go through all the hell they endured to survive by their wits and ingenuity against a physically vastly superior xenomorph species in the previous 2 films? Alien 3 was incongruous with what had come before.
@@marquezhuitzilemilioeduard5734 I don't necessarily share that opinion. I mean, heroes die all the times in movies but we get the sense of their sacrifice. That unhappy ending is something I don't mind. Having endings or outcomes like Newt and Hicks and Liz Shaw, and movies like The Mist, really kinda piss me off and makes the time spent with these characters feel diminished. Luckily they did them at the beginning of Alien 3 and not in Aliens, so that story is intact.
Newt and Hicks would die at some point. We all do. Just because I might die tomorrow, doesn't make it pointless me doing anything today. That's just the nihilistic nature of life. Neither character were really that interesting and just existed to develop Ripleys character. It was their death straight away that drew me into the movie so much. Seeing Ripley so isolated and alone in this hostile environment with no support structure, setting up the dark, nihilistic tone of the movie.
@@artboymoy Except Alien is a horror franchise. Aliens may be a brilliant action movie, but Alien 3 returned it to horror, and horror isn't a genre necessarily known for happy endings. Twisted, dark, depressing and bleak narratives are something I very much look for in horror, so personally, the bleak existential narrative coupled with the phenomenal camerawork and acting (the acting arguably being the best in the franchise) makes the Director's Cut of Alien 3 my personal favourite of the series.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen a juvenile Queen grow to an adult and terrorize the prisoners, then breed and have the prison overrun with Xenos. And also keep the "family" that James created and have them die one by one as the film progresses. Hardening Ripley to the point where she would be almost psychotic in her mission to kill them all.

From the cookie cutter hatred for AVP to the grudging respect for Fincher, it was just rehash. Neither the editor nor the narrator were familiar enough with the franchise to spot the mispronunciation. The writer added nothing new to the conversation... it's a bad video.
Hicks and Newt needed to die to enforce the bleak nihilism created in this under appreciated masterpiece. The world created by Ridley Scott was bleak and terrifying and to kill major characters in the opening scenes enforced that space is cold, nasty and holds no emotional attachment. To complete Ripley’s overall story arch, she had to finish her journey and that could only be done with her death. She was never going to live happily ever after, after everything she had encountered and been through. Visually it is beautiful and emotionally, terrifying. Yet overall, the true horror came from one thing, the forced stifling presence over creative freedom by featureless suits and money men.
I think it was too British--the inmates were weird and unrelatable. The plot hole about the egg is another issue. Doing a film with just one Alien (not counting the one inside Ripley) was a letdown after sooo many in Aliens.
After all is said and done the film itself can be described in one word: Bleak. Some films actually strive to be as nihilistic and desolate, but for the Alien name to go out with such a whimper was criminal.
I personally like the hopelessness and the gritty tone.Ripley,from being bad ass in ALIENS to wrecked shadow of her former self - at least in the first half.And all this no-more-lasers-and-hi-tech-gadgets-back-to-the-stone-age was a nice touch...Never forgave the killing of Hicks and Newt,tho!
While doing some research for a project I read David Twohy's script several years ago, it wasn't bad at all, though I think it would have worked better as its own thing instead of an Alien movie.
Alien was a franchise that got milked to death. No way could anyone top the sequel Aliens, but money talks and they had to try. Taken on its own merits, A3 was a fairly interesting and spooky concept. However, coming after such a peerless sequel, it had the appearance of a damp squib - a pot boiler to show off the monster again, and maker some cheap bucks. And they never stopped. The franchise got wrung and wrung with such progressively contrived follow-ups that the drooling one became a parody of itself. Thank heavens Carpenter realised that his Thing was a stand-alone masterpiece...
I never hated this movie. I remember seeing it in the theater and loving when I was a kid and never thought it was bad at anytime. Everything after was garbage
A3... BRILLIANT MOVIE!! Only thing I can't forgive it for is the off screen kills of Newt and Hicks... otherwise great setting, great characters and great dark humour.
When me and my family watched alien 3 in the theatre my mom was so pissed they killed Ripley... The most iconic female protagonist in cinema. The directors cut is better if you can watch it.
Alien 3 is one of those movies you sort of feel sympathy for. I love the cast and acting, I love the directing, I love the cinematography... it’s the uneven script that really brings it down for me. But I can’t fault the cast, crew or director for it, all of their work was great. It was the fact that Fincher didn’t have a completed script while filming, there was no coherent vision for what the film was going to be. Had Fincher had a completed and locked script do I think it would have resulted in a better picture? Absolutely. I am not saying people still wouldn’t consider it a black sheep of the series but I think that many would see that it is a well made movie with a strong vision. Heck even in the state it is now I think it is still better than alien resurrection, AVP and AVP 2 (whatever they called it). Fincher has gone on to show that given the freedom to make his movies his way without a ton of meddling he can pump out some really good movies. Alien 3 could have been that way had he had a locked script and the producers not second guessing him at every step of the way.
Great video, and I find any others on this film I've also seen to be fascinating in that train-wreck sort of way. I think this is a bad film, but one of the very rare few I can actually watch for some reason. I really can't explain it. Maybe for me it's that I can somehow see a good film trying to assert itself, but it just didn't happen. And wow, a lot of those alien effects were laughably bad. Took me right out of the mood for sure. Story was so poorly told and done, but some really interesting ideas in there. Many bad movies just sink under their own stinkiness. This one...stinks...and yet, I can sit through that fetid fart gas of this one, and endure it for the good ideas trying to be seen. And, I feel bad for Fincher...he is a great director.
What a sad bottom line for the Alien franchise if you continuely have to say about Alien 3: "It could have been much, much worse.".... and add in mind: "it then got much much worse."
Alien 3 is gorgeous, it has its flaws, but this heavy nihilistic atmosphere and religious references make it much, much better than Aliens, which for me with its ideas destroyed this mysterious, miraculous figure of the Alien.
My favourite Alien -movie. I can't explain it. I just love this a lot more than Alien or Aliens or any other Alien movie. I know it's flawed, down right disrespectful to Aliens, but god damn Sigourney Weaver has never been more powerful presence on screen and the milieu and the atmosphere are just oh so good.
My favorite "sequels" to the Alien and Predator movies have been the Japanese videogames that were obviously inspired by them. Contra, Metal Gear, etc.
The giant alien made up of small aliens reminds me of the end of the ending of the Enter the Matrix game where all the Agent Smiths into a giant Agent Smith. Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb
Alien 3 to me is a three-legged dog. Because of the way it came to be into the world, it will always be something defective. You can love a three-legged dog, can find it beautiful and be moved by it. But it is what it is. Personally, I find the nihilistic tone oppresive and uninteresting, and the fact that it kills characters from Aliens out of spite pisses me off. People look at me funny when I say I prefer Resurrection, but at least that movie doesn't make me feel like I'm in a wake when I see it...
I didn't mind where this film went, especially the assembly cut. Cameron made his contribution and was out of there. I'm sure he had no interest in trying to hobble some half assed story together with Hicks, Newt and Ripley. Were Ripley and Hicks supposed to get married and raise Newt? Imagine how terrible that would have turned out. Sigourney said herself at the time that this was supposed to be the last film and Ripley dying was a proper send off, and I agree. If I were to change anything about this film, I would have had less British actors because having so many was proof that the cast was just a matter of convenience because of the location. I would also remove the unnecessary over use of the F word the movie contains because it just cheapens the quality of the dialogue. The POV shots of the alien and the shots of it on the ceiling, because it's just silly and this isn't spiderman or the fly. Also, the alien eruption from Ripley as she goes into the fire, because that was just fan service. In the end Fincher did an excellent job given what he was up against. The end of this video "if only we knew at the time it could be much, much worse" is so true. Alien 3 is a masterpiece compared to all of the garbage that came after.
For the third film let's have two main characters dead at the beginning. Two characters that everyone loved. Two characters that narrowly escaped death in the previous movie. Oh yeah. And let's kill off Ripley at the end. Everyone at Fox behind that decision should have been fired.
Alien 3 aged better than ALIENS. Glad it turned out the way it did..My only complaint was that Giger should've been fully onboard and his new Alien designs used. Fincher should've been given more freedom.

It's too bad they didn't do the most simple thing...And just make a film based on the Dark Horse comics that came out a few years prior. The comics take up with Hicks and Newt still alive. Ripley is missing. Years later, an older Hicks and Newt end up on a voyage to the Alien homeworld, while a religious cult on Earth releases facehuggers that were recovered from the mining outpost. Chaos erupts and all Hell breaks loose on Earth! This was followed by another mini-series where they're working their way back to an Earth ravaged by Aliens. And then another, Aliens: Earth War, where Ripley returns to join the main cast. These first three series would have made extremely good film blueprints. The Dark Horse books kind of got all over the place after this. It seemed like there wasn't a month that went by that didn't have at least one Aliens or Predator book coming out. And when they did Aliens Vs. Predator....Well, the comic wasn't really any better than the movies. I don't know why, but no one can seem to just give us a movie that has Aliens fighting Predators....There's always some stupid human subplot going on. Anyway, there you have it.
Xenomorphs should've been on a ship (possibly something stealthy) that was on a collision course with earth. Earth doesn't pick it up/realize it's actually a ship. It crashes into maybe some body of water which helps the xenomorphs or at least a few still alive. What follows those events would lead to a potential worldwide battle. Towards the end or bonus credits would involve the predators coming into orbit and what remains of the military would pick up yet another ship and freak out. A predator scout group lands and immediately takes out a handful.of xenomorphs in some intense way right in front of a group of people. Roll credits and sound track/theme song
I hate this movie and would have loved if they pretended it was just a dream. It was that bad for such a big Alien/Aliens fan. But all the problems existed on the script level. They killed off everyone from Aliens! It was a slap in the face. But the direction, acting and sets were great. The 90s CGI is awful but was okay at the time. These script writers. WTF? I can't believe someone actually thought that turning Aliens into Snow White and the 7 monks was a good idea. I can't believe the FOX executives fucked this up so badly. They wanted a blockbuster movie without a blockbuster budget. There was a million ways to go! The Space Jockeys. Find the Alien homeworld. Put it on Earth. A mission to take an alien egg.. Marines in power armor!! They could have just remade Aliens and have it on a different world (let's say a Jungle world) and it would have been better. There were tons of Alien comics they could have used as a better script. You don't go from hundreds of Aliens to just one. It should have been more like Starship Troopers where they defended the outpost. But the director made a wonderful looking movie. There was some good tension. The actors were superb. I can't imagine the hell the director went through. Alien was all about sex. Dicks, vaginas, impregnation and rape. With the queen, and Ripley+Newt....Aliens was about motherhood. Alien 3 was about a back alley abortion after a gang rape. A bunch of people fucked the franchise, the studio killed their baby, killed off the woman, killed her baby, and afterwards you're just left depressed and hollow inside. I will defend Alien Resurrection for this: Where the fuck do you go from Alien 3? It was written to END a franchise. I liked the idea of bringing Ripley back as being part alien. But the second half of that movie was stupid and awful. AvP had a couple good moments but disregarded so a lot of cannon. They cheaped out setting them on Earth. The Ridley Scott movies had promise but like Alien 3 they were pretty but the scripts were stupid. There hasn't been a great Alien movie since 1986. Waiting 35 years for a sequel as good as Aliens is too long. I think the only way back for Alien is a streaming series like the Mandalorian. The franchise is dead and Alien 3 killed the streak of great Alien movies. A series could give it some depth. Right now the franchise is dead, hit by a truck and run over by a steam roller.
That 💩3 was the worst alien movie in the franchise hands down. After watching the special features of making this flick, then it made sense why this movie was just awful.

Alien 3 isn't that bad? It really is. It's a big depressing drag. I've watched this one so many times hoping to see something new in it.... it's not there. There's decent elements scattered throughout, but it was a big turd.
It's actually the first of the Aliens films I ever saw and without going in with whatever expectations fans of the series to that point had, In thought and still think it was a very good film. There's some great character actors amongst the guys in the colony.
Just my 2 cents but I find the alien vs predator movies much superior to Alien 3..AvP were not high art.But as Alien 3 did have beautiful cinematography..It was incredibly slow
