How could a 20-year-old filmmaker so skillfully overcome such a notoriously doomed production full of demoralizing logistical nightmares, incessant technical difficulties, squalid conditions, and countless injurious hurdles en route to crafting one of the scariest and most beloved cult-horror movies of all time with The Evil Dead? In this episode, we awaken the Deadites and find out What The F*ck Happened To This Movie!
WATCH OR OWN THE MOVIE HERE: amzn.to/3k9hhaj
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?
This episode of WTF Happened to This Horror Movie was Written by Jake Dee, Narrated by Jasn Hewlet, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Lance Vlcek, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Getting banned here in the U.K was probably the best thing to happen to this movie. It turnt a normal film, into a cinematic rite of passage for us. Something whispered about in the playground when I was boy. Something that had to be gotten from a friend of a friend, who made a copy of a copy. So violent, that it was illegal to own. Then in college, my cinephile friends & I bought multiple foreign copies. Because they were all different cuts. Showing LITTLE more each time. I think it actually made the experience better. It wasn’t a film - It was an artefact
@journeyman1218

I remember watching this as a teenager and I was truly terrified. Most horror movies never did that to me. It is amazing how limitations bring out creativity. If you were given 300 million and told to make the best movie you could, it would not be as good as you being given 2 million and told to make the best movie for that amount. You would focus more on the story, and interesting shots to convey it, and creative solutions to problems.

It was intense as hell but one of our party was a big jokester and basically riffed it before there was such a thing. He talked continuously, making jokes and funny comments and had us howling. There was an older black couple right in front of us we were afraid were going to get mad but they were cracking up too, listening to Bob! The one line I never forgot was when Ash pulled a particularly cowardly move and Bob blurted out, " That's it! I'm changing sides, I'm routing for the blue guys!" and half the theater broke into laughter! ( After the movie we sat for 3 hours at an all night McDonalds listening to Bob ramle on hilariously while watching him peel all of the batter off of his McNuggets, discarding the batter and just eating the meat. That's the point right? To enjoy it with others. It's a social experience. With that said, I first watched this while taking a boat load of weed and that alone made it seem more real and intense. Can't believe you guys saw it acid and didn't freak out.

@@AltairEgo1 we were to a point, but Bob's girlfriend and I were sitting next to each other - she'd seen it already and kept warning me whenever the jumpscares were about to happen, which sorta ruined the fright a bit, for me anyway. 😖

One big reason this movie gained such a huge cult following was that in the early 80s VHS/Beta movies were only released 3 times a year, just a few titles at a time, they were very limited in what movies you can choose from particularly the horror genre, Evil Dead and Dawn of the Dead were among the first to make it into people's homes and were often stolen making finding a copy a kind of quest and when you did find one you threw a movie party. Video movie parties were huge when VCRs and BetaMax first came out, VCRs were expensive and a novelty, not everyone had one.

you can only really understand how big this film was if you lived at a time when watching a film in your own home was a novelty. watching the netflix version now on phone is mind blowing.

there's something magical about movies being watched in 80's and 90's. we dont have HD stuffs and gigantic screen. only 19" box with resolution lower than smartwatch but we had so much fun. making a run to movie store to rent vhs tape or cd because tomorrow is weekend.. that's when 2 seater couch could fit 5 person, and it was one of the sweetest memory

Still flips me out that I'm only about 30 minutes from where they shot this classic. Too bad the cabin is no longer there and its private property or it would be a great place to party for Halloween. :(

My dad told me that he used to be into horror movies before I was born and he told me that this was one of his favorite movies back in the day. He got back into watching Evil Dead trilogy after getting into "Ash vs The Evil Dead" on Netflix a couple of years ago.

this film used to scare the shit out of me when i was 8 years old, it was only when i got older i realised it was a comedy. about the "video nasty" thing, there were lots of films with that label in GB at the time due to the head of the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) being a hardcore christian, basically, anything he didnt like, got banned! he is the reason why so many other films from the 70's and 80's got banned too

Really great documentary. And great use of clips. Two small corrections - the final shot was NOT a motorcycle through the camera. That was Sam himself running like crazy through the woods and through the cabin. All of us Fake Shemps were on doors for the effect. I believe we did three or four takes and one time Sam did fall into Bruce knocking him over - but I didn't recall anything being broken. Second correction - Sam did NOT burn the cabin down. I visited it a few times the following two years and it was still there. No one know the real reason for the cabin fire - lighting or kids partying inside. Compliments again on a great doc.

The "Video Nasties" were the films I most wanted to see. I used to buy copies of them from a bloke at a flea market - he copied them from VHS tapes he bought in Amsterdam, so some had Dutch subtitles. I later saw The Evil Dead on a laserdisc - a friend of a friend had splashed out on a big TV (this was the early 90s) and a Laserdisc player - I was so jealous. He put The Evil Dead first then we watched El Mariachi - he had the sound coming out of speakers. The Evil Dead Laserdisc was the coveted Japanese edition - with all the gore intact. I loved it!

I have been to the original Evil Dead filming location in Morristown Tennessee. I live right down the road from it for many many years. It's been burned down now from kids partying in it. But I loved that local landmark make me very proud to live in Morristown Tennessee the only thing that ever made me proud to live in Morristown Tennessee. Morristown is a meth infested horrible place to live I barely survived it I don't recommend anyone living there

Boy I love this franchise!! I remember seeing the original Evil Dead back in 1982/83 can't recollect the exact year but I remember I was shitting my pants. There were so many genuinely scary horror movies during the decade it was an amazing time for horror fans. I remember the movie Motel Hell then there was this twisted movie called "Mother's Day" just so many genuinely scary flicks. I would go to the movies just about every Sunday when we use to go visit my grandparents house and my older sister and I would meet up with our cousins and since it was just us for kids we were off to the movies for most of those Sunday's. We saw so many great horror films. I remember we went to see the original Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street. Then there were the more obscure ones like Demons, it was about a bunch of people trapped in a movie theater and people started becoming possessed by Demons upon this one lady getting her face scratched by a mask she placed over her face in the theaters lobby. That movie genuinely gave me the creeps. But this movie Evil Dead was great, we really enjoyed part 2 even more because Bruce Campbell's performance. He fought back with all he had, it was both scary and hilarious.... This movie is a bonafide cult classic...

As the cinematographer of the film I can say this is maybe 75% true. So much of what is said about the location production and conditions are not true. Pretty ridiculous that it implies Sam was doing the camerawork and sound.

@timphilo2019

@@AltairEgo1 I don’t know quite what that would mean. The agent for the film, Irwin Shapiro, worked hard to sell the rights or licensing all over the world. Later Dino DeLaurentis contracted Sam, Rob and Bruce to do the sequel. Video rights to the first film have gone through several licensings.
