Good point. I also always ask, what if we are not even able to recognize life forms? Of f they are energy, gas, or other forms which we cannot determine. This was always a point to me when it comes to human vs animal intelligence. Where we base the intelligence level of other life forms based on our limitations to recognize their speech, social interaction, etc.

kroey221 I don’t think anyone has at all. The variables are so varied, that hypothesizing would be a moot point. Can we recognize the alien life form, can we communicate, what type of contact is it? Is it colonizing or peaceful? And even that, would be subjective. Because what if they see us for what we are? A predatorily, parasitical species, that is self destructive and wants to exterminate us? Is it an aggressive contact or a saving contact? As we exterminate other parasitic species?

I watched an interesting documentary that had a mirror in an aquarium and the people studying the dolphins would use a waterproof marker and write numbers on the dolphin’s stomach. The dolphins would then go to the mirror and put their bodies vertical so they could see what was written on them. So they are very self aware.

It would be a great sign, but what makes you think alien lifeforms would have any cognition or language remotely similar to ours? It's perfectly plausible that their language is not classifiable in terms of alphabets and "words", and perhaps the signals being used for communication (of any type) have a a lot of redundancy and overlap which carries an extra meaning of its own. There are many mechanisms that would easily break out of such distributions.

You seem to have missed the point he made about commonality. They already know that dolphins can undertake two conversations at once and can have half their brain asleep while the rest keeps working. Maybe the law you mentioned applies to human languages and like he mentioned, possibly great ape communication but like 1ucasvb said, their language doesn't appear to be so elementally structured.

It's not just language, it's a default artifact of emergent complexity, this law of distribution is everywhere in nature. I could imagine a machine intelligence/language may not follow this assumption but you would expect to see some form of power law at some level of the structure of communication by nature. I understand that there could also be redundancies and error correction methods that may not be anticipated and yet even then you would expect to find some form of parity that would allow the receiving end to sort out what is new information in a transmission and what is redundant. I couldn't begin to try to understand how say for example a theoretical species that didnt use a phonetic language and possibly chemicals, pheromones and such instead; then having used a form of em transmission or created an AI that then inherited this base form of theoretical language and transmits.. How would that be interpreted? It's a very good queation.
