Kurtz popping in and out of shadow symbolizes Marlon Brando gaining too much weight for his role and Coppola improvising to make him appear more intimidating.
@dapeach06
@dapeach06 5 лет назад
Keeping Brando on was a good example of the Sunk Cost Fallacy. Coppola felt like he had paid too much for Brando already and the studio was Breathing down their necks, so he did the best he could with Brando. But almost anyone else would have been better. He was great in The Godfather, but after what a huge pain he was behind the scenes of that one, I'm kinda shocked that Coppola wanted him in Apocalypse Now
@squamish4244
@squamish4244 5 лет назад
His fatness had the unintentional effect of giving him a kind of decadent, 'fallen from grace' aura, however.
@rainy7106
@rainy7106 5 лет назад
Muad'dib2288 Brando is a magnificent actor and perfectly portrayed Kurtz, even with the extra weight. The weight really gave him an almost Buddhalike presence (as well as the shaved head) it also shows how long that man had been fighting, he had grown old and fat out in the jungle rather than at home with his wife and son. I really think Coppola wanted the best man for the job and I think he got him.

Yeah...but the effect is awsome. Quite a lot of "happy accidents" are better than the original intent...creativity is as much IMPROVE as INTENT, maybe even more.

My grandpa was a Ranger in the war when he first joined the Army. He'll talk your ear off about his time stationed in West Germany and Belgium in the eighties, the little shits he had to deal with as CO of Fort Riley at the end of his career, even the flights to and from Vietnam. But if the jungle itself ever comes up, he immediately shuts down. It's very clear that those are memories he'd much rather forget. He's not a fan of Apocalypse Now, though, although he loves the shit out of Saving Private Ryan.

I read the book before I saw the movie. The trip down the river was, itself, the descent into madness. Even the locals on the boat were not immune to the effects of the stress and attacks from the indigenous tribes. The closer Marlow got to Kurtz, the more he became Kurtz. Fast forward 70 years and Coppola's interpretation is pretty much on point. I like it because it is the same story. In the book (I'll have to read it again, though) Marlow was a man of immense fortitude. The movie projects the same on the captain. In the movie, we're introduced to a man that we can see has already been damaged and is subsequently immune to the psychosis he encounters on his journey. But, nevertheless, when he finally encounters Kurtz, he is still affected.

As a kid we use to watch this and Full Metal Jacket over and over; I remember how they made me want to join the military. Sadly because of a bad ticker I was born with I could never get in. The Vietnam War had grabbed my interested back than and the pointless horrific nightmare it became. What's strange we still do some the same thing that we talk about how many enemy are still alive which is sort of another way of doing a body count. We go in with little planning and convinced that our might will see the day and it will be clean up in less than a week. We ignore the darkness that goes into war, and the monster we make of ourselves.

It makes a couple of very good pooints, which have only gotten more urgent since, but in a somewhat opaque way. Firstly, that war, as an experience for a soldier, can become an addiction, with the heightened sense of reality, the adrenalin, dopamine hits, and the heightened sense of comradeship and purpose, and that this addiction in itself can not only cause men to throw their own lives away, but want to manufacture violence and combat for the sake of those things, becoming an evil in itself that tends to prolong war and increase its murderousness. Secondly, that an unjust war necessitates ever more unjust means to prosecute it, plunging everyone involved in the unjust cause into deepening moral degradation and damnation, and that a man like Kurtz, who fails to recognise the essential injustice of the cause embraces the necessity of the descent into evil in the methods of fighting without realising that doing so cannot create any kind of just victory and better world as its outcome. Those two messages are true for every US war fought since up to the present, and all those being planned and instigated and propagandised for.

5:43 It wasn't a surprise to me, even when I first saw this as a callow youth. Kurtz knew Willard had come to kill him. He kills Willard's remaining crew but spares him to do exactly that. He is appalled at what he has become at the same time as seeing no alternative. "You must make a friend of horror and moral terror." He has become a monster and craves release, but he needs his executioner to understand why he became what he is before he kills him. Willard accepts his role as priest/executioner, recognising Kurtz's suffering. His journey down river has brought him to an understanding of the inevitability of Kurtz's situation. The manner of Kurtz's death is foreshadowed by the scenes of the killing of an oxen, a genuine ritual with no connection to the original film plot undertaken by the locals and filmed by Coppola who then decided to incorporate the footage into the story (so much of this film was made up on the fly). FWIW Kurtz's death also contains echoes of the ritual killing of Kings in iron age Celtic cultures.

I would like to get one thing strait: I prefer the original idea for "Bioshock infinite" However, the mostly repetitive and boring combat did reveal a story much like "Heart of Darkness" and ended with a self-sacrifice as deemed by a more transcendent being: Elisabeth/Anna. Rather than "Apocalypse Now", where Benjamin becomes just like Kurtz to defeat Kurtz. I like the same type of story having very different, but also very human outcomes. The similarities I see are the closed systems and how the human condition tends to lead to tyranny at the cost of abandoning morality for the individuals toward the forced morality of the tyranny. I also like how the death of Booker was baptism. Water being chaotic and a symbol of change and rebirth but also as a reflective surface. Benjamin, in "Apocalypse Now", emerges from the water, changed, and reflective of the nihilism that Colonel Kurtz. Both Booker and Benjamin "die" through baptism. Both deaths are for transcendent causes. Both for the end of tyranny, but are very different and neat to think about. I think that Carl Jung was onto something very very deep and we keep making stories that reflect the nature of humanity, including the "Shadow" which Jung philosophizes about. It's just ..... It's just neat.
