Ugh, you used the word "mansplaining," so I think I have to disrupt your signal just for that. But I also think you misidentified the point of the movie pretty badly. The whole thing is about earthling psychology. Vietnam is just a backdrop. The movie makes less of a point about war than it does about the people who fight it.
