Aligning Deadbolt with Strike Plate ( 

Just tried out the solutions I watched here and worked perfectly. Door bolt works okay. Thank you.

The problem of misaligned strikes, in my experience, is most often the result of sloppy work by builders, less so by the building settling. I've even encountered brand new pre-hung doors where the mortise for the strike plate was cut incorrectly, and I had to discard the jamb and fabricate a new one from scratch. "There's never time to do it right, but there's always time to do it over."

I tried the solutions in reverse. Used a file on the strike plate with a little success. Then I checked the door hinge up top. The screws were tight on the hinge. I loosened the screws just a bit so the door could drop just a fraction of an inch. That worked great! Thank you!

My front door does this, will try marking the end of the bolt and filing the strike plate. Checked the hinge screws as you did , all tight. Good video on this.

That's great advice on using the file! I recommend using a regular driver (not a power driver) on the screws so they don's strip. BTW replace that strike plate with a deadbolt strike plate ;)

What's the best way to make the door latch hole deeper? My new lock is longer than the previous one so it won't fully click all the way over. So im trying to make the latch hole deeper. Thank you

I enjoyed (now six years later since you published this video) the explanation as to why the deadbolt no longer hits the strike plate correctly. My mother-in-law slept on a chair last night because I didn't fix the problem at 8 PM when she called! This morning when I called, she reminded me she slept in her clothes and what was I going to do with her problem. Looks like she will have another night or two of sleeping in her clothes! I can't make it over to fix it as I got to get my beauty rest!

Having trouble locking or unlocking a deadbolt is fairly common. Sometimes the problem is that the strike plate on the doorjamb no longer lines up with the deadbolt inside the door. Here's one way to fix it.

We have tried both suggestions but it appears that the striker plate still needs to be moved a little lower down. None of these repair videos show that. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks!

I'm having the same problem but it's weather related & happens only in Winter but especially this Winter & this month which is our coldest February in history in Western Pa. I was thinking about using a file so thanks for the confirmation. Will that cause any problems when the weather gets warmer? The bottom of the deadbolt is catching the bottom of the striker so I have to pull up on the door to get it to work.

Well, my problem is that the deadbolt doesn't go all the way in strike plate hole. It seems that it was not cut deep enough for pin to go inside the hole. The deadbolt needs to go inside without the end of the hole stopping it when I turn it to lock. Do you have a video showing and fixing this problem? Thank you for your video.

This applies to mortice door latches as well. We recently published an article on repairing door handles, latches and locks.

Unless that strike plate in made in China, you are going to be there for a while with a file! They are hardened steel and tough to (file)!

Gonna try this. I'm the only one with the strength to turn mine, except from outside I'll bend my key trying.

Use lipstick instead of caulking. Quicker to clean off, easier to see. Don't move the strike plate. Just grind/file it. (Trying to re-position the strike plate means having to struggle with the screw holes.)

First of all that is not a deadbolt strike plate, but a dead latch strike plate that is one for a door knob. Secondly if you had to fix a strike plate it would be easier to remove it first after marking it. Third standard simple deadbolt strike plates like that are a joke and make doors too easy to kick in. Get a reinforced deadbolt strike plate that has 3 inch screws. If you want to carry this farther, think about reinforcing the door face and the hinges. Cheapest way to reinforce hinges is to put in 3 inch drywall screws or buy matching 3 inch screws to your hardware.

Get a Dremel.... it will save you a lot of time and energy. ALSO..... she didn't indicate that she checked to see if something had caused the door to move in the jamb.

Try installing the correct strikeplate. You have a key and knob strikeplate.

The strike mounted on the door jamb in the video is not a deadbolt strike, is is made for a latch lol

Wrong strike plate for a dead bolt

I had a big problem with my doors Fletwood bring a mobil home to calexico ca. the first day I notice doesnt close then they sent a contractor to fix the problem they remove all doors and nothing then sen two more and nothing then the contractor sent his people nothing this quys moved some under the mh. the back door come as am inch down then come two man to install 6' fence they told me that the strike plate were installed in wrong position the uper down and vice the back door remain lock since they bring the woman of the city hall don.t wanst to do nothing and she is proctecting the indpector 84 an hour. this is incredible 5 contractor and we can open the doors it cost 40k and 12k ob labor the name of the contractor is pionners affordable homes of el centro cal. the first contractor remove all the shingles the inspector and the woman always only perjuries tp the city manager .the calexico city hall had chamged 4 times of c.m. but can.t fix my doors what a shame sos sos.

FIrst off, the strike plate isn't for a dead bolt, it's for a latch... a dead bolt strike plate is flat and has no angled leading edge....jus sayin..
