Nice video! Back in the mists of time (it really was a long time ago) we were taught "Star" and "Delta"! If you reverse any 2 of the 3 phase wires you reverse the direction of the motor (handy if you need a reverse switch) If you go big scale you get a Star Delta transformer in your substation. The HV in pylons is Delta and the 240/425v supply is star with your neutral off the center .... and the earth too!

@9:26 to 9:50, I assume you twisted all the silver together as you did with all the black, which then became the red wire, but thought I'd mention it here for others as that step was missed. Very helpful information for those of us either just getting started with motors in electronics, or for those of us who have been away from it for FAR too many years!!! 😄 (I honestly can't believe how much is possible for a person to completely forget and have to relearn over the course of 30 years of disuse.)

I'm sorry that's not enough you deserve more. I've been designing and boat for some years now and one part I've been kind of stuck on is deciding how to bring air conditioning to the boat. You have given me ideas to help me decide. This is my issue of having many skill sets is deciding what's best or can I life without a system. On boats it's best thing's work together like heat and cooling in one unit. But also on boats redundancy is king as it could be the difference between life and death. So balance rank suppream. Building a boat like the one I want to build requires much thought as some things can't be changed once done or start over. Stating over will cost much more time and money. So hopefully you can see how your videos are inspiring many people in ways on matter what their trying to do big or small.

Thank you so much for your very clear explanations of these motors. I never thought of them as delta and y circuits. That opens up a whole lot of the matter, but am I right: if you take any two motor leads and reverse them you change the direction of the motor? Thanks so much, I have quite a few of these.

Great guide, thank you. It's worth noting that the printers that you take these from will probably have a motor controller built in and the stuff that you ripped off can be really useful if you need to sense the motor position. I was building a wind turbine but i wasnt happy with the particular motor, with a different 3d print and a bit of experimentation, I had the start of a weather station and a great wind direction sensor!

In Dr Bass videos he shows a ebike setup with big industrial star delta switch ! You take off in star and get good torque but then switch to delta and it increases the rpm ! I am not sure if this may improve the twizy performance much as its heavy but it might lower amp draw when its at higher speed !

I have noticed bldc is the next big thing in celing fans, they offer high effiencey, and a selling point I guess, I have a couple of the 12v celing fans, for camping , rv's and such! Nothing like the new 3phase bldc, fans, well I'm not sure why they would rectify AC, then convert to 3phase, seems any gains would be lost in conversion, being mains powered I'm not sure the voltage either, the small 18" 12v fans I have work fine! They can be noisy, great video!
@vylbird8014
@vylbird8014 3 года назад
It might have something to do with the motor cost. An AC motor running at the low RPM needed for a ceiling fan needs lots of poles - at least sixteen. That's lots of separate coils, lots of magnets, and lots of physical space to fill with material of suitable magnetic properties. It may well be cheaper to use a simpler-construction and more compact BLDC motor, even after considering the cost of the driver electronics and power supply.

While Delta wired motors is always 3 wires, 3 wires may be either Delta or it may be a Wye without a neutral wire, and 4 wires is a Wye with a neutral wire, but most 3 phase Wye motors do not need a neutral as current is never conducted on the neutral. As for solder points, a 4th solder point not connected to anything may very likely be neutral of a wye and just 3 solder points may still be a wye where the neutral is not soldered to the board. With Wye configuration you always energize 2 coils at a time. With Delta configuration you only energize one coil at a time.
@erlendse
@erlendse 3 года назад
Most drivers use the senter for sensing and drive two windings, if center is used at all. With Wye two coils would be powered, while delta it would effectively be all 3 with different ratios.
@kreynolds1123
@kreynolds1123 3 года назад
@@erlendse your mostly right on the delta coil energized, and I was just wrong. With Delta, most of the time all three coils are energized, but there are moments (instances) when anyone of the coils have 0 current, as the current moves to reverse direction. Are you sure that wye neutral is used for sensing? My axial flux BLDC motor on my channel is wired wye and neutral is not used.
@erlendse
@erlendse 3 года назад
@@kreynolds1123 The sensing part is true for some of the 6 step BLDC drivers. Not used on motors with sensors, or vector control. Many actually don't use the center wire or simulate it with 3 resistors. The drivers that use it have 4 connections for the motor.
@kreynolds1123
@kreynolds1123 3 года назад
@@erlendse ahhhhhh, I see. For back emf based electronic speed controllers, three resistors in wye create a virtual neutral to compare against and detect the zero crossing. I see that a virtual neutral network or resistor can work with both Delta and Wye motors. But, without a virtual neutral one needs a Wye motor with a real neutral wire as a Delta can not provide a neutral reference without a virtual neutral.

@threeMetreJim
@threeMetreJim 3 года назад
PC fan is only 2 phase usually. 1 solder spot is the common. You can also tell by how many 'spokes' on the star shaped part. A multiple of three 'spokes' is three phase. A two phase motor will have a multiple of 2 'spokes'. Luckily the PC fan motor has 4 'spokes' and the CD ROM motor has 9 'spokes' so there is no confusion with a number of spokes that is both a multiple of 2 and 3.

How about a video on a DIY brushless motor driver. I have attempted this but was unable to come up with a good solution to track the position of the motor. Which is very important. I assume this is done by sensing, and reacting to the inductive kickback on each coil. Are you aware of any relatively simple ways to do this? I know the speed controllers are cheap and easy to get, but its still a fun project to make your own.

Why it called DC when it uses alternating currents?
@erlendse
@erlendse 3 года назад
Input to the whole assembly is DC, while it internally use various signals. DC in, rotation out if you see the whole motor+driver as a block.
@darkobul1
@darkobul1 3 года назад
@@erlendse it DC was real input then you would not need to change currents. Those motors would work on pure sine wave with off phase. Their output is also sine wave. Those ESC just create varying currents from DC.
@erlendse
@erlendse 3 года назад
@@darkobul1 1. there are no sines from the driver, it actually outputs square wave. 2. No DC motor can have continous motion without some sort of switching. brushed DC motors use brushes to create AC for the coils in the rotor. The driver(often called ESC) does the job brushes would do on a brushed motor.
@darkobul1
@darkobul1 3 года назад
@@erlendse i know but that is change of current. That square wave gets damped by coils in motor and mare change of current from VCC to ground are also AC. But thank you for trying to explain it. Its very confusing.
@vylbird8014
@vylbird8014 3 года назад
The motor itsself is AC, but for practical purposes it is considered as a unit together with the electronics that drive it. In larger motors they even come integrated in one case. The electronics run off of DC.

Relying on counting the connections to tell the difference between star and delta configuration is waste of time. We manufacture thousands of the beasts and almost all are star and I've not seen one yet with neutral - 3 connections only.
@paulmaydaynight9925
@paulmaydaynight9925 3 года назад
bad assumption, the worlds a big place mate ,its got lots of stuff not manufactured by "you" in your backyard to a set process,and tiny 10k unit run, trust but verify is good practice to find that identical external form factor with different internal layout due the over valued cost/materials on hand at the time usually.
