I grew mine by accident. I peeled it and threw the peels in my lemon tree pot for fertilizer. Bout 2 weeks later i noticed hundreds of babys growin. Its really that simple to grow them.

I don't peel mine. I cut in half and use a spoon to eat the fruit straight out of the skin. The skin acts like a bowl.

Seems like an easier way to use the seeds, would be to cut it thin, then just lay the thin piece in the soil. Cover it of course! I say this, because I plant tomatoes like this! I slice thin slices of tomato, and plant in a pot!! Just an idea!
@TheMoreYouGrow

You definitely can do that! The only reason I didn’t is because we had issues with ants and gnats in the greenhouses and was trying to reduce the problem with them. I’d say definitely try that method!

in nature the fruit fall to the ground and is eaten or just rots. so ive just cut a slice and put it in some potting soil.

The wildest method I’ve seen to propagate a seed was to (I kid you not) slice up the fruit, bury it about a half-inch beneath soil and cover it. Your mileage will vary in terms of how many viable plants will sprout but I swear it works.

You still can possibly grow dragon fruit, but you will have to grow it in a fairly good size pot/container as it will not survive temperatures below freezing

Definitely kiwi like. I honestly think it’s the little seeds that makes me thing that rather than the taste. I prefer the yellow ones for their sweetness, but I still love the more common pink skinned white flesh ones any day! So refreshing! Thanks for watching!

Elderberry Garden Croatia you’re welcome. Saw you on the Texas boys chat. So do you grow elderberries or is it just part of the name of you’re farm?
@elderberrygardencroatia8162
@elderberrygardencroatia8162 6 лет назад
Yes, we are growing elderberries! A lots of them! We propagate more at the moment! We love them! We make winter teas, flower juices, jams, berry syrup, raw elderberry juice , vine etc. We have apples, plums,, cherries, black walnuts and hazelnuts, lavender and immortelle, calendula, sage and mint along with our own veggies too! This year hopefully will get chickens! It is a little hard while we live in the city and travel to our off grid homestead several times a week , but that makes us happy! The homestead is near the natural pond at he edge of nature-haritage park full of wild life: ducks, swans, storks, and other birds!
@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 6 лет назад
I’ll have plenty of questions for you on elderberries. I am wanting to include them in my forest garden going in next fall. I’ve never grown them so don’t have much experience in elderberries but they are becoming very popular around where I live as elderberry syrup and seems like a good market. What conditions do they prefer? Do you know how they handle dry conditions. Where I live in Texas gets hot in the summer and rain can sometimes be low. I can create moister conditions for them if need be but I’d like for all the plants to need as little inputs as possible and make for hardier plants

I’m assuming you had the pink skin varieties as many people find them to be bland (I like them!). I always people to try the yellow. They are night and day different. Yellow are like liquid sugar haha. They will grow, but depending on your growing zone you may have to grow them in containers as mentioned. Also you may like to just start with a plant from cuttings if you can’t find the fruit. Much faster to grow and quicker to fruit. I just did mine from see because I just had them available and why not haha. Here’s a great nursery that I buy from often that has red, white, and yellow varieties available. Couple questions. 1. Since they're tropical, I guess it needs to be kept indoors so it won't freeze? 2. How many should you expect to get off of one in a year? As you might have guessed, I'm curious about the wine making potential.
@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 6 лет назад
Yes would need winter protection Not sure on a yearly basis I guess it would depend but the can put off quite a few if needs are met The red and white flesh varieties would make the blandest wine ever lol the yellow might do better but it wouldn’t be anything to talk about compared to figs and blackberries. The yellow ones are good as sweet interesting tropical snack but I don’t see them making an award winning wine
@shaunkeith4087
@shaunkeith4087 6 лет назад
brix of 25 is common in yellow variety's and they do not ripen once removed from the cactus, i do not think they would make a good wine or liqueur of any sort. however may be a great addition to some popular drinks? also to answer your original question if in the right climate hylocereus cacti may produce 100's of lbs of fruit all year round, all depends on the size of the cacti and conditions.

I cut mine in half and eat it with a spoon... I've propagated mine by using one of the halves like a planter and a spoonful of the pulp/flesh with seeds in it. I put some potting mix in the empty half, add my spoonful of seedy pulp, then cover with more potting mix until the dragon fruit half is full, then place on top of potting mix in a larger planter... right now I have my seedlings hanging out in my hibiscus pot in the house and they're loving it.
@tamsolo1584
@tamsolo1584 3 года назад
It should be noted that my reasoning for this is that if the fruit were to naturally drop from the "mother", it would fall to the ground where its flesh would then decay and act as a source of nutrients... what seeds are good will sprout.

I’m using a plastic cup for these to grow, would it need to have holes in it for the water to drain or is it good because I have the plastic wrap on top of it. I’m sorry I’m asking this but I couldn’t see or not if there were holes in what you were using.
@TheMoreYouGrow

One good size hole in bottom. Needs to stay moist but needs good drainage so they don’t rot or the soil doesn’t go anaerobic

It's always better to grow them from cuttings if you have that opportunity. Growing them from seed can take 2-3 years longer to get fruit.
@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 6 лет назад
Jim Raynor yes I am aware, and you’re right cutting are faster if you have them available 😊 I have some different varieties going by cutting and it is much faster, but wanted to show how they can be started by seed as well. This is a series looking at what fruit people might see in their grocery stores and how plants can be propagated from that fruit. Some are just for fun while some can be productive in time, such as these dragon fruit. Thanks for pointing that out though for those who might rather go with cutting if they have them available or want to order them! Thanks for watching

@@TheMoreYouGrow Cuttings will also be genetically the same to plant it came off of. This can be a good thing, especially if they came from a farm, because it ensures the quality of the fruit. I will say that growing from seed can have its benefits too, because regular dragon fruit flowers can be difficult to pollinate in the USA (different pollinators). A seed grown plant could have flowers that have the stigma much closer to the anthers, which would result in a much greater chance of natural pollination without having to go around and hand pollinating all of them. The color of the fruit should be the same from seed grown plants, though. Something that will always be true to seed is most papayas. If you try growing them, give them lots of organic fertilizer to feed on. Don't give them a small pot either. Papayas also don't need to have their flowers fertilized, which is also good because it can make the fruit be seedless. Some papayas actually have all female flowers, so look for other ones if you come across seedless fruit.
@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 6 лет назад
Jim Raynor yeah for sure. That’s why I have some from cuttings so I know why kind of fruit I’m getting, but I have a soft spot for projects like this because I love rolling the genetic dice and the mystery of not knowing what I will get. It’s like risk free gambling 😆 Papayas are definitely on the list for a video. I’ve done papayas before and they grow like crazy, just haven’t done them on video yet. Thanks for the tips!

Mine have not produced yet, but they are still not old enough. It takes between 3-5 years for them to produce. So with patience they will produce. Grafting is just a lot faster if you have access to a mature plants.

How well would they grow here in central Texas? Would they survive the winter outside covered or do they need to come inside.
@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 6 лет назад
They will need to come into a garage or inside somewhere where they get some light once the temps starts getting below 50ish degrees to be on the safe side as they are a very much a tropical, but thankfully they grow really well in containers! You can check out the video here on how you can build a trellis for it within a container ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IA8lMVgyoHQ.html

Not sure where you live, but I find mine from my local grocery store for a month or so each year. If you are in the US there are some nurseries that I know of that sell dragon fruit plants from cuttings, which is a much faster way to get a dragonfruit plant than from seeds. I just did these from seed because I had the fruit available and it did not cost me anything extra. Here is a link to a place where you can buy the plants already grown if you’re interested alohatropicals.com/product/selenicereus-megalanthus-golden-dragon/

@curiousgeorge2749
@curiousgeorge2749 6 лет назад
Why do you need to separate it from the white meat? can you put the whole slice into potting mix. Isnt the white meat nutrientious for seed?
@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 6 лет назад
If you don’t remove it from the flesh you’ll end up with mold issues in your pot and attract fungus gnats which can cause whole other issues. On one hand yes, the flesh could provide some nutrients, but on the other hand it can cause some issues. In nature the fruit would provide primarily moisture to the new seedlings, but we are going to be keeping them plenty moist and they will have plenty of nutrients in the soil we provide. So in this case the flesh will end up causing more problems in our set up than it will provide benefits. Thanks for watching and stay curious, Curious George! 😜😁

I have been trying to grow dragon fruit from seeds, for months. The red flesh and white flesh seeds germinate but not in 7-10 many of these videos say. I have been unsuccessful germinating the yellow dragon fruits, any way suggested. I am in AZ, the heat here is oppressive, and some seed germination is stunted or outright halted. I have grown dragonfruit from cutting. All methods of germinating the yellows have failed, or just take MUCH longer than suggested by the many videos on RU-vid. I'm still trying. I still enjoy your videos, but.....
@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 2 года назад
I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble. I wish I could be there to check out your germination process to see if there was anything I can find to help. The big thing I think with what you have told me is they need warmth but not too hot of temps. Especially putting cling wrap over the top for the humidity will cause temps inside the pot to spike really fast.
