Wow, star fruit trees are beautiful plants. Think I’ll try to grow one. We live in NC, but have a nice green house. I’m thinking the zone we’re in we wouldn’t be able to plant it outside.

Dawn Sykes they really are beautiful and they eventually make beautiful flowers as well. You’re right, they won’t live through the winter outside, but They do great in the greenhouse and given enough space and time will produce fruit! Good luck and happy growing! Thanks for watching!

@TheMoreYouGrow

Will be a bit more challenging but not impossible. You will have to keep it above 50 degrees year round so it to do well but I’ve only even seen them fruit when over wintered in a greenhouse or a sunroom where it can stay warm and get plenty of light

Living in Florida, for less mature trees a frost can kill, for more mature trees it can take 30 degree temperatures on occasion but it really doesn’t like the cold. I would grow it in a large pot (maybe put it on wheels) and roll it into the garage with a plant light during winter.

They taste absolutely amazing! Once at the right ripeness they have the texture of an apple with a bit of the tartness of a Granny Smith apple, but a wonderful tropical sweetness that has a floral aspect to it. They are also incredibly juicy. You need a towel in your lap to eat one and not get it all over the place, but they are so refreshing! One of my top favorites!

Wow, these grow fast. Thanks for explaining how to get them started. I can't wait to try these out. - One question: what camera/microphone do you use for your videos? All the videos and audio are so clear. I wanted to document my farm progress, but don't think my camera is good enough. ----(never mind about the equipment...I just saw it in the video information)
@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 6 лет назад
Check the links down in the description of the video for the video equipment I use. I use the Panasonic in most of my videos because I like the video quality. I also use the cannon vixia, I use it mostly when I’m recording out in the field because I can plug in and use the Rode mic when it’s windy. The Panasonic doesn’t have external mic capabilities but it has amazing video quality (can zoom into the craters on the moon). If you go through those links to order them a % goes back to helping out the channel as well! 😊

Hi, not sure if I’m missing it but do you have any videos or tips on pruning star fruits, grown from seed?
@4202cvinc
@4202cvinc 2 года назад
I have trying to grow starfruit from seed for months. I am frustrated by a complete lack of germination. I get the fruit from a local tropical fruit market, I have used all ages of the starfruit barely ripe to over ripe. Seeds are all of the same consistency. Not one of the dozen or so seeds have germinated. Have tried seed starting mix and germination in moist paper towels. I am in Arizona, germination should be relatively quick. What else?
@wallacewallaby5782

Mine took months to sprout and has barely grown in the last year. It pretty much just looks like a twig with a few leaves. I just assumed they were extremely slow growing.

@sandrayeebenedetto8757
@sandrayeebenedetto8757 3 года назад
Hello from NC! Thanks for the informative video! We had 5 seeds germinate, 4 didn’t make it (dried out). We have 1 left and now the leaves starting to mold. We’ve removed the plastic “top” but afraid it will dry out. It’s about 5” tall, can I leave it outside? I don’t want to kill it, but inside isn’t doing well. It’s in the high 80’s during the days. Thanks!!
@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 3 года назад
If it’s 5” tall then it will be fine. The top needs to be removed in fact to prevent the mold. It will grow fine and can be placed in a small container of some kind with potting mix with good drainage. The best way to go is to water well and let the soil dry down a bit between watering. Don’t let it get bone dry but don’t keep the soil soggy either
@royabeyk4571

How often we should water the star fruit tree and how long does it take to have the fruit?
@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 3 года назад
I don’t really have a schedule for watering. The best way to say is I let the soil dry between waterings. I never let it go bone dry but the soil shouldn’t stay extremely moist all the time. Mine took about 4 years or so but the fruit was great!

Sometimes it’s the fruit you get. If they were picked too under ripe then sometimes they don’t come up. Has happened to me a few times. Sometimes it’s just other conditions. It’s hard to say for sure without being able to see

@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 4 года назад
Have you planted them? I hate to say it but if you planted them and it has been months I don’t think they are going to germinate 😕 I’ve never let mine dry down. I clean the seed up and wrap them in a damp paper towel until I am able to plant them. I haven’t tried to see if they germinate after allowing to dry but if you haven’t planted them yet it’s worth a shot

@@TheMoreYouGrow Hi!! Here's an update so the seeds I put in a cup of water have developed some kind of white coating. Looks like they're coming out from the middle of the seeds. I hope it works lol! Also question I have another set of them in a wet paper towel in a ziplock bag stored in the fridge. I think I saw or read somewhere to keep them in there for 60 days but not sure if it's accurate. Also should I change the paper towels or just leave it?

@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 6 лет назад
Yes they can! Since these are from seed you’ll never know what kind of fruit you get but you will get fruit eventually. Sounds like your weather is great! We’re still to cold here to bring mine out on the porch haha
@ubetchya78
@ubetchya78 6 лет назад
Well I don't like the weather here, I'd gladly trade it for seasons and snow... I don't think this "winter" we even got down to 32... My patio is east facing, and gets full sun from sunrise until about 11-11:30ish - in years past when I've had (non edible) plants out there on "cold" nights I've covered them with a sheet and they've survived. Edibles I've grown in spring and summer.

The morning sunlight on your patio is super great for starfruit. Mine get the same kind of light. These I try to keep the minimum temp no lower that 50 to be on the safe side

It’s hit or miss with fruit from the store. A lot of times the seeds are immature because the fruit was picked before it was ripe. When the seeds are dark brown and hard they should be viable

@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 6 лет назад
Colin Larkin 3:23 and I had put more info in the description section that I didn’t get a chance to say in the video. They’re pretty straight forward. Plant the seed in good quality potting soil and watch them grow. Only things I forgot to mention was allow your soil to dry a bit between waterings, not super dry, but starfruit do not like constantly wet soil or as they say “wet feet”. As for as light they are a mid canopy understory tree so they don’t really like direct light in my experience so I place them where they get good morning sun and shade during the hot time of day. Give them those conditions and they grow like a weed lol. Hope this gives you a little more info and I can answer any questions you may have. Thanks for watching.
