All About Ember Tetras - Lazy Little Nano Fish

Ember tetras are nano fish like no other, they are the colour of fire and yet don't live up to that at all. in fact they are rather lazy, and perfectly happy bimbling about in a little nano tank. They do need company though so be sure to stock them with at least 6 member of their own kind.
They are perfectly safe to keep with any other nano fish so long as they are not aggressive, just be wary keeping them with large fish as an ember tetras would make a fine snack.

Get 15+ if you're able. It really brings their schooling out. I had 6, then got another 11. So amazing to watch them. I think they look like little piranhas with their glittery colouring. They are just great.

Also, a tip for feeding them. Get one of those grinders.. you know the type. That will grind the food small enough for all the fish. Then just feed on both sides of the tank if you have more aggressive eaters.

I put 80 embers into a 450L heavily planted tank dominated by red cherry shrimp and they are great together. I wanted a fish that wouldn't harm the shrimp too much and they were a great pick for my tank. Despite a pH of about 7.5, I have a lot more than 80 embers now and it is really satisfying to occasionally see smaller fish in the big cloud of embers that were clearly born in the tank and have safely grown up to join the adults in the open. Loved the video, I will be sure to check out more of your channel.

Are they still schooling tightly 4 months later?
@garthantash
@garthantash 11 месяцев назад
@seirerman I have had them for about 3 years now and they have always shoaled together and still continue to. They don't school (swiftly swim together in the same direction) like a rummynose tetra but they do shoal (hang together in a large group), moving across the tank like a cloud of orange.

Are they shrimplet safe? I have a shrimp tank and am trying to get fish that won’t eat my shrimplet
@garthantash
@garthantash 6 месяцев назад
@shiyaowang1185 I think you are asking the wrong question. The question I would ask is: Is your tank shrimplet safe? I started a tank with 40 red cherry shrimp, 80 ember tetras and 20 praecox rainbowfish. I now have a few thousand shrimp in that tank with the same fish. Rainbowfish would absolutely eat shrimplets and I bet any kind of tetra would too but I have multiple 10cm balls of moss in that tank that act as perfect nurseries, letting the shrimplets grow up in peace and none of my fish bother the adult shrimp. The only truly shrimp safe fish are obligate herbivores such as ottocinclus. The vast majority of fish in the hobby are omnivores so they will eat shrimp given the opportunity - I use moss and subwassertang to not give them the opportunity. This way I have a tank where all the animals - fish, shrimp and snails - all have places they feel safe and can thrive in my tank. The shrimp are happily breeding, cories are happily breeding, ember tetras are all happily breeding in the same tank and none impact the other in a negative way because the tank is set up to cater to each type of animal's needs and are not definitely incompatible with each other.

@@tinymenagerie Good to know. I just started a Fluval Flex 15 with a beta, a snail and two Endler livebearers. The Endlers are very colourful and are always moving, but they are also very small. I'm thinking that a group of 6 Embers might be a good edition; especially given the dark background and black substrate. It's either Embers, neons or cardinals, but your video makes me favour Embers.

Heyo! There's actually one little 1cm cherry shrimp in the tank with them for about a week, its an accidental addition from another tank when I was swapping plants around. So far the embers have shown no interest in it at all. And seen as they don't really go 'hunting' I doubt they would find many shrimplets. I doubt they are 100% safe, but certainly not aggressive either.

I don’t know if anyone else has this problem but mine are very pale! I’ve had 3 for 2ish weeks and others for only a couple of days but they’ve got nearly transparent! How can I colour them up? Tank is a 20 gallon long, with 6 zebra danios and 1 angelfish
@sherryp8967
@sherryp8967 8 месяцев назад
They need to be in groups of six or more to feel stress free. Stress causes less color. Tank needs to be heavily planted with LIVE plants, including floating plants, so they will feel safe. They prefer dark substrate. Fish store embers are juveniles and don’t have their full color yet. Could take months to fully color up, as long as tank is heavily planted, you have a group of at least six…and preferably dark substrate. My tank meets those goals so they are bright red and not shy at all…stay right up front and center.

@@chicagotypewriter2094 you need to increase the number of ember tetras as stated in the video . also they probably arent the best choice to go with an angel fish which will get large and can predate them. your embers are probably very stressed.

Hey Melissa. I’m not sure how much you can colour them up and how much is based on genetics. But I find mine look best in moderate lighting and it took a good few months of stable water conditions and a varied diet to really start colouring after their stressful time in the shop.

@tinymenagerie
@tinymenagerie 3 года назад
Hey M.Indra Soyat, I have seen my embers scattering eggs in the community tank, but I've never seen a fry. Their fry are tiny and take a hugely long time to grow so there's very little chance of survival unless they have very dense cover - which my tanks doenst provide. That's not to say they couldn't survive, they would just need a lot of luck :)
@ejbrinegar
@ejbrinegar 2 года назад
Dear Lauren: I’ve kept Columbian tetra (Hyphessobrycon columbianus) for half a dozen years. I’ve found that gravel vacuuming their tank occasionally yields some eggs, so I keep such water in a 10-gallon. In this way I’ve raised hundreds of these egg-scatterers to adulthood and traded many for store credit at my, favorite pet store. I’v often wondered if I could do the same with ember tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae), especially now that I culture vinegar eels (Turbatrix aceti), which might work as a first food for fry until they are large enough to consume live, brine shrimp nauplii. But, my water may be too hard and alkaline to breed this, tiny, Hyphessobrycon species. Thank you for sharing this, terrific species profile of a very attractive, tiny fish. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar P.S. M.Indra Soyat: my apologies for replying on your, comment string. RU-vid won't let me start my, own, comment string, today.
