All About Khulie Loaches (Coolie Loach): Adorable Little Bottom Dweller 

Watched this so that I could see some Kuhli Loaches because I hardly ever see mine lol. Gorgeous little fish, I love them.

Definitely one of my favorites fish. Very (VERY) effective at cleaning the bottom of a tank.

I have four Kuhlis in my 29, can't wait to get more! Most of them hide under the driftwoods and rocks, but one that I named Deku, has made his home inside of a dwarf sword plant in a back corner. He will stick his face in the substrate and his body stands straight up amongst the leaves and its just both the silliest and cutest sight. One of my albino cories likes to go hang out with him. After wanting these guys so badly for a year, I finally had a big enough tank and the hype is real!!! They are show stealers when they do make their appearance ❤ Great video as usual!!!!

I have 5 Kuhli Loaches for more than five years, and they are still alive and well. So far, the best scavengers and get along well with cherry shrimps. The thing we must pay attention to is: They don't like instant light turning on and off (dimming recommended), also they're really sensitive to aquarium salt and other chemicals. Any slight vibrations, like tapping the glass, can get them spooked and stressed. They may injure themself or jump out of the tank by that.

I don’t own any but learning about these fish were what got me serious about finally setting up tanks. One day I will have them for sure :)

We have close to 20 Kuhli Loaches in our heavily planted 75 gallon (284 L) tank. It also has a hard scape designed with many caves, tunnels, and other hiding areas. Eight of our KL are the black kind and they love to play in the bubbles. Two or 3 swim around frequently in the bubbles going up and down, in circles and then thy drape themselves over some plants and just hang out together. They add so much character to the tank and are a great cleanup crew. We got all of them as tiny juveniles. It's been 3 years now and they are doing well. 🙂

I love my kuhli loaches! I have 10 striped and 8 black in my heavily planted 75 gallon community tank. The striped ones hardly ever get spotted but the blacks seem to be less afraid and I can usually spot 4-5 at any given time.

Probably my favourite fish in my 160 litre community tank. I have 10 of them and I see them out all the time. It's not brightly lit and has lots of Mopani wood, twigs, stones and leaf litter; the only substrate that is bare for more than a few square centimeters is at the back of the tank where it's dimmer but they are out all over the substrate during the day. Very highly recommend!

Thanks Lauren, another lovely presentation. A few years ago, I introduced a group of 5 kuhlis into a heavily planted 75L community tank that was 30cm tall and they loved it. I used to see them all the time, then month by month, they seemed to 'disappear'. I searched the whole tank, draining the water down, and lifting all the wood to no avail. There weren't any predatory fishes (corys, dwarf gouramis, hatchetfish) to have eaten them, and no bodies to find. Then, one day, I spotted my hamster scurrying back to its cage, a very tall Rotastak, with a huge bulge in one of his pouches. Intrigued, I waited for him to climb up into the penthouse where he slept and opened the top to see what he had found that he considered was worthy of keeping. Searching through the bedding, I found a dead kuhli loach, very dry and curled up in an S shape. I investigated the tank cover glasses and they were both tight. Except for a small quarter inch triangular corner cutout at the back of each where the air lines and the cables went into the water. The water level was only half an inch below the covers, so I concluded that the little blighters had somehow wriggled up the corners and squeezed between the cables to get out, then fell on the carpet and under the bookshelf-type tank stand where they perished - only to be found by my hammy! Mystery solved. They never left the bottom whenever I saw them, always on the search for food, they ate flake and Tubifex and the water was at pH 6.5. Obviously, as you stated, they get more adventurous after the lights go off. So, the lesson is: if you keep kuhlis, plug all the gaps in your lids and covers.

Kuhli Loaches are awesome!

They are hard to find in the stores. But I have two so far. They didn't seem to be to happy until I fix one side of my tank with smooth marble size rocks and they have made that there home. They slide in between the cracks and we can sometimes see them move where the rocks are laying up against the glass. They are just to cute except when I am cleaning the tank and I spook one it freaks me out lol.

I'm glad to find this video. I was thinking of getting an aquarium to amuse my cat. I think the loaches will go a long way to entertain her. It seems like I ought to add the loaches last.

I wished there was a smaller species that could live in a 10 gallon.

The Kuhli loaches in my area in Canada are bred in higher pH, I have a bunch in my 8.2 pH aquarium

Hi Lauren! Should I be worried about “yo-yoing” if mine do that in the air stone bubbles? They’ve been doing that since I got my group of 8 five months ago. At any give time of the day there is always 2-4 doing it. I always thought they were playing. Lol. It’s a heavily planted 29 gallon with loads of rock piles and hiding nooks. They live with 12 CPDs and 8 adorable hasbrosus Cory’s (which I think you would love). Now I feel stressed watching them yo-yo.
