Living With is a series where "pet owners" share their experience caring for a breed of dog. In this episode, Marilyn Braverman shares her life and times living with Stevie her Doberman Pinscher. In addtion to Stevie she has a French Bulldog named Oliver. Her two dogs live an amazing life together. Like any good big brother Stevie looks after Oliver and the two of them get along greatly.
Doberman Pinschers are well known as intelligent, alert, and tenaciously loyal companions and guard dogs. Personality varies a great deal between each individual, but if taken care of and trained properly they tend to be loving and devoted companions. The Doberman is driven, strong, and sometimes stubborn. Owning one requires commitment and care, but if trained well, they can be wonderful family dogs. With a consistent approach they can be easy to train and will learn very quickly. As with all dogs, if properly trained, they can be excellent with children.

When I was about 17 years old I went overnight hiking/camping with a few high school buddies of mine into the local mountain trails. I brought along my 3 year old female Dobe. That night when we settled in for the night into our sleeping bags my Dobe circled and fussed over each of us until we were settled securely into our sleeping bags. She did not come crawl into my sleeping bag until the rest of the guys had been "tucked in" by her. The next morning when hiking down and out of the mountain side one of the group decided he wanted to take an obscure kinda "off trail" path down to the base of the mountain he assured us that we would all end up at the same meeting point in about an hour time. My Dobe all of a sudden got kinda stressed as she saw me and the other two guys go one way and the single guy go off on his own. I had no idea what was going through her mind at the moment it was happening; she seemed torn as to which way she should go looking back and forth; she stuck with my single friend and followed him all the way down to the meeting point. She followed him because she knew that I was with two others and she followed the single guy because he need a partner for safety. Absolute true story !! I have had a special place for Dobermans in my heart and in my home ever since. They are the most intelligent breed!!

My life has been surrounded by Dobermans. My grandparents had them. My aunts and uncles had them. My mom and I raised and sold AKC petigreed Dobies in Montana for years. When I got married, we instantly got a Doberman and a kitten for our home (yes, they slept together). People cannot begin to fathom the intelligence of this breed. The absolute love, and loyalty is unquestionable, and they will protect any member of your pack, be it cat, child or spouse. After so much of my life with this breed, I cannot fathom owning anything less. There simply is no equal.

I wish more people would follow this woman's lead lol Esspecially the part in the beginning about her identifying a problem the dog had socially and being a great active and responsible owner by fixing it in every way she could, it obviously paid off. This is a phenomenal example of discipline, boundaries, exercise, love, research, training, being a responsible dog owners, and mostly communication. You don't end up with a gorgeous and beautifully well mannered dog like this by accident lol She's proof that being the leader of the pack and treating a dog like a dog and not spoiling it completely rotten to a fault will produce one hell of a dog and an even better loyal best friend 👏👏👏👏

Of the 5 dobermans I've had the honor of sharing my life with,only 2 had cropped ears. All 5 were rescues and came with their ears the way they were. The one I have now,,Rocky,,was 4 months old when I got him and his ears were cropped but still in the process if being posted. It was SO MUCH WORK !! I love the look of cropped ears on dobies but would never subject my dogs to it willingly. It's upsetting that people judge me and my dog when they see his ears. I rescued him from a life of misery,and had nothing to do with what happened to his ears. But people can be so judgemental on this subject. I also agree that my male dobies have all been far more affectionate than my females.......

Vivienne Clark docked ears aren’t done inhumanely (given the right home) it is done to protect against ear infections. Notice that wolves, coyotes, and foxes ears naturally stand. Flopped over ears is something we have bred into them.

@byReZio 6 лет назад
Such bullshit excuse. Cropped ears are for looks and only from the human point of view. People don't give a shit about their dogs and they crop their ears. It takes time to heal and then months of taping to make them stand upright. It's unnecessary. If it was really for ear infection we would do the same to cavalier king charles, beagle and all the other breads that have floppy ears. But no we only do that to dobermans, boxers and pitbulls because it makes them scarier to humans. There was maybe a good reason to do it before for improved communication or as guard dogs. But today most people only crop their dog's ears because they're used to it and follow everyone else. Also tails are very important for dogs, as communication with other dogs and balance, if it's their it's for a good reason.
@rodentraiser3995
@rodentraiser3995 6 лет назад
What, ReZio, you think a dog with a short tail can't wag it? And as for caring about him, my dog's ears were cropped and his tail was docked and I loved the daylights out of him. He also had excellent balance, even with a docked tail. I ought to know - I worked with him in agility training and SAR. What cropped and docked dog have you ever worked with? I've been around hundreds of Dobie puppies whose ears have been cropped and they were happy, healthy, well adjusted puppies whose only concern was getting their own way all the time, like most puppies. They don't mind the taping a bit IF you do it correctly. Thanks to people like you with all your emotional garbage about ear cropping, fewer and fewer people know how to correctly tape a cropped ear these days. THAT'S what's causing ear infections and pain for the puppies. Thanks for nothing. So if you don't want to crop your dog's ears, fine. But you don't have any right to tell me or anyone else what to do. Why don't you start a campaign about people not spaying their and neutering their dogs instead, which is far more painful for the dogs?

i had a Doberman, huge big softie, a lovely dog, excellent guard dog but very trustworthy, good with children and other dogs. He was 5 years and 3 months old when he collapsed and died in my kitchen, it turned out he had DCM, a heart condition very common in doberman, 60% of dobes have this condition my vet informed me, it was the most devastating thing ever. I would love to live with another Dobe, but I never will as I would always be worried that the same thing may happen again. They are the most amazing dog and I will miss my boy always. Breeders need to be more selective with breeding their dogs and breed for health and not just to make money. When my dog died I researched this and could not believe the amount of people who's dogs had suddenly died with no apparent signs of illness, it is truly devastating. I live in England but apparently this problem is with all dobes across the world.

In Germany, they are called Rhea Pinschers, which when translated, literally means Deer Terrier. They remind me of deer in their body structure and grace of movement. They are characteristically terrier in temperment. But you couldn't ask for a better dog. They are great with kids, as long as you teach your child to respect and love them. I like the idea that people are leery of them. I'm leery of people!

I'm thinking about getting a female Dobie... the first I ever had was a mini... she was genius!!! At everything! Found her dead in my drive way and never knew why. I did get her from a neighbor and didnt know much about health issues. I was young and she looked pretty healthy. She lasted about 1 year. She was an inside doggie. Guess now I'm ready to start fresh on my new Dobie journey. I am getting her from a breeder (my friend) so I'm excited to see how this goes. I pray she is healthy and last over 10 years🤷‍♀️ but I will get her checked with the family vet!!! These comments really scares me🤔🤨☹😥😰

They are A LOT of work when they are young, because they are so freakin smart. I used to get mad that I had to out think a dog. Once past the puppy stage, they are your best annoying, nosey friend. Loyal to the end. They want constant affection and are not the the dog to leave alone for long stretches of time. Mine will seriously catch an attitude if I'm late getting home from work. He will turn his back on me, and ignore me. LOL

They are wonderful dogs. However we shall never forget that they had been breed to walk long distances and to protect the tax man.( Mr. Dobermann) . These dogs are very courageous and high energy. Very intelligent and smart and loving. They have to live indoors as a part of the family but need lots of running and walking every day. I would not leave them alone in the yard in America, and please do not just have them as decoration. :) They need to live with humans they are breed for it and to work with humans.

Great video. sums it up quite nicely. I have two right now, and have had Dobies for the last several decades. I wouldn't DREAM of having any other breed, they are so loving, intelligent, active, protective and more. Best point made is that they love their family and are definitely a pet to live INDOORS with you. The temperment has been softened overe the past 20 or more years to make them even more family friendly, but make NO mistake, the protective and alert nature of these dogs is always present and noticeable. If you are committed to a dog that will reward you every moment and interact with intelligence, this is the breed for you.

Mark Gillum I’m thinking of getting a Doberman and was reading some comments saying that they are very prone to a lot of health issues. Considering you said you have owned them for several decades, I wanted to know your experience with them and if you encountered all the health issues that they are “highly” prone to. Thanks
@markgillum5709
@markgillum5709 6 лет назад
Aldo Samayoa No problem. They are prone to several genetic diseases namely Von Willerbrand's (a bleeding disorder), hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, Wobbler's syndrome (vertebrae disorder), heart disorders, bone cancer. These are usually spotted and either bred out or noticed by most good breeders or dog owners. Most dogs are prone to some disorders, these are the ones you want to spot in a Dobie. I have had one pass of a heart attack, and two of cancer. Cancer by the way is major killer of all dogs, especially the elderly. That being said, with proper care all my pets have lived at least 10-12 human years. Ten is about the expectancy of Dobies. I have encountered no more of the issues than have other owners of other breeds and their issues. Good breeding and good care are the keys. Dobies are family member inside pets and do not take to cold weather or isolation. On most cases you will usually see a difference in health and behavior after about 7 or 8 years of at all. I would not be discouraged from the breed. The positives far outweigh the negatives and any pet can have an illness, even a fatal one, just like humans. The love, loyalty, personality and companionship far exceed the risk or fear of illness to me. Would you abandon or not love a family member of they became ill? I think not. If you want a Dobie, get one and enjoy all the time together you have, short or long.
