I'm always gonna maintain that it's emotive/emotion reliant. Most users channel it as a form of blue or purple because they're merely wielding the force, much like you'd use an invisible telekinetic style for combat and amplification, but some others let their emotions bleed into it and it adversely affects the color. Maul's (technically the night sister's) being red at times, and Plo Koon's being a rather calm and serene golden yellow, with all shades between and beyond having some form of emotional meaning.
I think green is representative of emotional peace and prosperity. Mother Talzin was reasonable for a dark side user and luke had been emotionally balanced from his teenage years to well into adulthood.
Darth Plagueis in Legends once said "In order to summon and use lightning properly, you will someday have to be on the receiving end of its power, as a means of taking the energy inside yourself." But for Ray in canon that's not an issue even thou she has never seen force lightning in her life and only used it by accident when trying to save chewie.
In the KOTOR games, I always give my characters force lightning, and upgrade it to its highest level. It's easily the most powerful force ability in those games, in terms of sheer power.

I feel like that of Force Lightning color does not determine the strength, or intensity, of the ability. My example is that Vitiate used two different variations of Force Lightning against the Hero of Tython: Blue and Black. And they did roughly the same amount of damage to the Hero of Tython.
It may not be that any are stronger than the other, but it's always colored by their use, in the same way sabers reflect their users. Red being outright control and malice, yellow the desire to protect, green an expertly controlled and mediated use, blue a directly combatative color and black an unstable color reflecting an inherent inner instability but raw power similar to the darksaber.
Their is also the Force Unleased II game in Starwars Legends that Darth Vader used White Lightning against Starkiller. And also want to point out that in Starwars Legends Darth Nihilus the Lord of Hunger who Cheated Death also used Red Lightning.
Did you ever make a video on Maul using lightning?? I’m assuming it’s in legends right, but I’d like to hear about how he first conjured red force lightning. Also to speak on colors, I think it deals with emotional effects on the force and possibly, force affinity as well. Not unlike a patronus so think you got something there.
Depending on your Discipline tree as a Sith Assassin, Darth Nox could do red and black lightning too. Although instead of the traditional display, he charges his lightsaber with it and discharges it at his opponents using the blade as a conduit.
A pretty interesting use of force lightening was by Cade Skywalker. Check it out. It’s been a number of years since I read the Legacy Comics but he used it to heal people
It would have been nice to see Master Plo use his lightning ability in the clone wars. However, I agree. It would be nice to see them give us more about force lightning and what else one can do with it. Whether light or dark in nature

Red is probably dark, but not evil. The son was the embodyment of the dark side, but he was certainly not as evil as Palpatine. Meaning Red is the pure, cold and emotionless dark side, but when mixed with emotions such as hatred, pain and fear (as is the case with Palpatine, Dooku and most other Sith), it turns purple or blue. Green stems likely from Sith Magic/Alchemy (everything the Night sisters conjour has a green glow). It is of the dark side, but not of emotion. It instead stems from knowledge of magic (or dark side science, if you will). Yellow lightning could mean, that it is still of the dark side, but fuelled by compassion and a state of serenity (like Vaapad)... using the dark side within the opponent, rather than one's own. Oh, and Black Force Lightning is neither of the Light or Dark Side... but of the Cool Side of the Force, reserved for only the single most cool force user in the galaxy. ...it is also possible that there is no actual colour to the lightning, but that the colour is determined by the mind whichs sees the lightning. Meaning some perceive it as blue or purple, some as red, some as yellow or green and some as black.
fun fact, the dark side actually gains power from emotion, "peace is a lie there is only passion" it is the light side that is emotionless, "there is no emotion, there is peace"
@@1xlaz2 : yes, according to Sith doctrine. But who says, they were right? They were actually a bunch of idiots that killed themselves right after they built something up. But the whole "Balance" thing could indicate, that the dark side is not inherently evil. It is just so that evil folks draw from the dark side like the good ones draw from the light. And thus subsequently their doctrines developed in a way to propagate only one side.
Lightning has always been my favorite force power. Growing up I’d be wrapped up in a robe and I’d play Sidious while my friend rolled around on the floor as Luke. I would shock him like the throne scene lol. Ahhh good times.
personally, i like to think of force lightning like the lightning in Avatar the Last Airbender. that it's produced when your emotions clash and you are redirecting that out of yourself in the form of lightning.
They should expand more with the colors. Would be dope if their effects did different things like teleport people, knock the force from others for temporary times, makes u mad, paralyze force users, make them mindless, etc like u explained. I think it would be nice to have certain effects aided by the coloration
Could have seen Luke use force lightning in the sequel trilogy. But that would have made him look cooler and the movie better, and obviously they weren't going for that. xD
In the video games Jedi Outcast and Academy, Force Drain manifested as red lightning, so perhaps it could not only shock, but drain health away from the target into the caster...
Well I believe the son of mortis & Abeloth had the most powerful variant of lightning sense they lived longer and practice it too it's maximum capacity . Then Darth sidious & Starkiller is behind them
I once produced blue lightning out of my feet after landing from a really high jump. There was this really tall swing-set in my apartment complex and my brother n' I were swinging to max height, where you catch air and slam back down on the swing. We were going as high as possible on this tall swing set and then jumping at the peak to go even higher. We did this a few times, practicing sticking the landing. Then we pulled a wooden bench over that was around 20 inches wide. Not super wide, but we were then trying to do the same max height jumps and stick the landing on the bench like a surf-board. So when I stuck it his wife, who had been watching us from another bench nearby, said that she saw blue lightning come out of my feet when I landed. It was a massive discharge of static electricity that I built up within me through friction by swinging. So it doesn't take a dark-side connection to produce Force Lightning. 😐😂😊
I was watching episode 5 when I realized something about the bit in episode 7 when Rey holds anakins lightsaber it shows her where it has been and where it would go this includes jakku and Luke leaving Rey there
An OC of mine, Ruthless Zunro, a Dathomirian with purple skin, has produced purple lightning. He did it when he was facing Count Dooku on Geonosios with his master, Mace Windu. For context, Zunro is a nearly emotionless youngling because of how he views his race. When he shot the lightning at Dooku, he missed but the impact was cold to the touch. Like the force lightning was somehow icy as opposed to thermal. I don't have an official name for the move yet but I will say that my OC is a candidate for the prophecy Anakin is thought to be.
Here's an interesting concept for Force lightning, the user, practitioner conjures up the lightning and then shapes it or molds it into a weapon, kinda like how Sub Zero uses cryomancy to make axes swords warhammers and what not or how magicians in Skyrim can use spells to make magic weapons
Starkillers force lightning went from blue to purple in the dlc after he became the emperor's new vader. Maybe it means it means they are more in tune with the dark side? Like how in the original trilogy, palpatine's force lightning also looks more purple, than in the prequels.
Because you mentioned Darth Nox I had to laugh, because, of all the protagonists (classes) in SWTOR, Nox is the only one (which I found, that is) who has an actual name, his own SWTOR page on Fandom and, on said page, is said to have done all the things you experience throughout the game, from the Sith Academy all the way to the Eternal Empire/Valkorion. So I was watching the Last Jedi last night and I noticed Luke had said to Leia "No ones ever really gone" (Talking about Ben Solo) and its the same quote in the Rise of Skywalker teaser trailer. *hint hint* Kylo turns to the light.
I have a "What If" suggestion. What if Sidious didn't save anakin on Mustafar. The story would start at the moment when Sidious is standing over Vader, saying " You disappoint me Lord Vader" and he walks away. I think this would send Vader into a tremendous rage. We know Maul survived being cut in half so I don't see how Vader wouldn't be able to find a way to survive. I don't know maybe Yoda senses that he is still alive and decides to rescue him, brings him back to the light. All 3 Jedi( Kenobi,Yoda, and Anakin) train Luke and leah some where where the Skywalkers can't be sensed by Sidious. Wait for the right moment and fight the emperor. Sidious totally surprised to see Anakin/Vader alive(probably crap himself with 3 Skywalkers in front of him). Let me know what you think.
I always thought blue and red were the main two colors of star wars each representing light and dark. So blue lighting is simply less intense used by inexperienced welders or users not yet in tune with the dark side. Purple lighting has begun to tint light bleeding a crystal this showcasing its darker nature and power. Finally red lightning lacks the blue tint of the light a full expression on the dark side at its purest.
The reason I think is show that there is more to learn, even with all his power Palpatine’s lightning is a dark purple. While the son had red. He is the embodiment of the dark side, the very thing Palpatine emulated. Basically they are showing Palpatine is using the dark side while the son is the dark side. But just my thoughts. Sequel trilogy really destroys my theory as Palpatine has Blue lightning in Rise of Skywalker.
Is there a canon or legends answer as to why force lightning seems to be attracted to lightsabers? I've noticed that in the cases of Obi Wan vs Dooku & Windu vs Sidious, the lightning is initially coming at them as many little bolts from various trajectories, but they all end up being successfully blocked by their lightsabers, which are simply a straight line of energy. Is there a reason for that?
i have heard, not sure from the source, but one of the myriad of videos here on youtube, and it sounds cool and plausible, especially if it was made cannon, that the coloration of force lightning is based on family lineage. the most common as stated is blue or purple. most families use "earn" or have access to this coloration. but other bloodlines could be the red, green, white, and rare black. as far as the potency, i believe it is more a matter of strength in the force rather than a color being more powerful than another. after all, we do know that there are levels of force lightning from the basic lightning which in and of itself has levels of strength (Darth Malgus for example, initially, couldn't put down a republic soldier in armor with it, but later while storming the Jedi temple, was able to burn jedi to a crisp with it. his experience and growth in the darkside increased the lightnings power). from lightning, there is Maelstrom, and then Storm. so i think the color has little or nothing to do with the power output. but like i said, i do like the idea of bloodlines determining the coloration....
I know that nobody liked TFU2 and neither did I but when you held Force lightning for long enough and it would turn a bit indigo. The same went for if you used it in that weird rage mode which was overly busted.
I would say regarding colors of force lightning and power, look to the more scientific answer. For instance with steel, and the different color shades it goes through as it heats up. That or another example would be stars. There could be also atmospheric reasons as well, which would remove consistency of color.
