Good to see the 355 on the stand. Dont go crazy with the grout. A block with grout taxes the oil, more frequent oil changes are necessary and you also have a turbo to heat the oil as well. Cooling system needs to be A1 also. I think grouting is warranted and does help cylinder stiffness. Follow the instructions carefully, it can go wrong. I allowed myself to get distracted when doing it 20years ago and mixed it wrong. When it set it came away from the cylinder wall. I still have the block never used it. Your cam will start working between 2300-2500rpm no prob. The cam spec sheet suggestion is for 308, 355 equals more torque cam comes in earlier. Enjoy your build Jason.

Good advise George that's the only concern I have with grouting is oil temp, I'm really going to pay close attention when driving it, will fit temp gauge to the sump and monitor temps. The cooling difference between water and oil will be a lot more different.. What's your thought on going to the top of Welsh plug Is it too much?... @@griffsrearmountturbothemod1623 where to grout to is a hard question to answer. If it was a drag racing engine, top of the plugs or even higher no prob. But circuit/track engine alot of other factors. If it was my engine just under half the plug. Keep a eye on what the oil feels like. Im not sure how to describe it, but its as if it turns to water consistency. Oil temp will go up for sure, big sump and oil cooler are your friend. Another thing to consider , if you were to grout up higher how will that effect cylinder wall temp and will you need to further modify piston ring end gap. What do you get when one mod leads to another? Modfather 👍

@@GG-rj4oj I'm starting to think bottom of plug.. 27 minimum ring gap on both.. There is a whole topic on this, it's not only oil temp etc, but I think water/meth will be more important in keeping cylinder temps down, That's something I'm going to play with and try to get the motor to injest more.. Will talk about it in coming vids it's very interesting...

@@griffsrearmountturbothemod1623 the effect combustion temp has on a cylinder wall versus water temp on cylinder wall. Some machine shops run hot water through the engine block before they start the honing process. All this knowledge results and enables top engine builders to get close to 3hp per cubic inch naturally aspirated. As if 2hp per cube wasnt hard enough.

With the grout filling the block I know a lot of drag cars do it it's kind of a one pass doesn't get hot is it going to open up cooling problem as your really taking half the water capacity away I know a guy that bought a drag car and tried to turn it to street and couldn't keep it cool enough just a idea

Great stuff Griff I love the smell of the cast iron after machine work almost as much as engine enamel. This one should be an animal. I'm very nervous about the block with the hole in it mate, I understand the attachment to that one but any cast iron or steel That has suffered cracking and failure will always be a compromise after repair. This applies to concrete mixer gearboxes, convayer bearing blocks and any other industry's equipment . Compromise isn't a word I would want associated with the corner stone of a new engine for racing. Aluminum is a different story. Maybe that one can live on in the hilux. How ever I have zero experience with 308 s and alternative blocks may be limited. Myself I would move heaven and earth to find a better core after having my share of multi thousand dollar heart breaks . Have fun old china. Summers coming.

I love the smell too, especially in the machine shop.. I fully get were your coming from with the cracked bore, I will precede with the block but we will see what happens wether I run it or not down the track... Crazy as it seems I do have a extra spare 253 and the bores on those are incredibly thick so who knows, maybe a stroker 310 Haha.. Thanks for calling in after a spell , I'm still chipping away with it, had my ups and downs, but all in all the car is really transformed and my knowledge now gives me the chance to make the right decisions, I really think outside the box, most of the time it pays off... it's really a journey of self discovery and pushing myself to learn more about this incredible hobbie of car modifying...Cheers Griff
