Tis is a Motormouth Couple Car Review of the all-new 2022 Hyundai Tucson PHEV, or plug-in electric SUV. If you are looking for a plug-in hybrid, the Tucson is going to be tough to beat.
There’s a reason why this Hyundai is so popular; it offers such incredible value. The Tucson PHEV has a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 6-speed automatic transmission. It gets a combined 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque with 53 km/33 miles of EV range, standard AWD. In Canada, the Tucson PHEV comes loaded with so many features including, an 8” touchscreen, a 10.25” digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, power drivers seat, leather interior, a panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats, 10-colour ambient lighting, a hands-free smart liftgate and 19” wheels. For an extra $2,700 CAD you can get a few more features like a 10.25” touchscreen, driver seat memory, power passenger seat, 64 colour ambient lighting and premium projector type LED headlights. In the US, the base SEL trim has quite a low starting price and comes with minimal features like cloth seats, a power drivers seat, heated front seats, an 8” touchscreen, and wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The top Limited trim has all the extra features. This PHEV qualifies for the $2,500 Federal EV rebate in Canada, there are Provincial rebates available in participating provinces. In the US, the Tucson PHEV qualifies for a tax credit up to $6,587. The Tucson has a 7.2 kW on-board charger, with a 120-volt level 1 outlet your charging time is 10.6 hours and with a 240-volt level 2 outlet, it’s 1.7 hours. Tucson fuel economy is a combined city/highway rating of 2.9Le/100km, 80 MPGe. With the battery depleted it gets 6.8L/100km, 34 MPG city and 6.6L/100km, 36 MPG highway. The Tucson starts at $43,499 CAD/$34,900 USD and the top trim is $46,199 CAD/$42,700 USD.
At Canada Drives you can buy your car 100% online and have it delivered straight to your doorstep. Once delivered, you have a full 7 days to love it or return it.

Awesome review as always from the two of you! I don't have a place to plug overnight at my apartment, so I went with the standard HEV in great part because of your previous review on that. I love it!

Thank you very much for this review. I ordered the PHEV on faith, having only test-driven the HEV. And also thanks for finding out why there is no wireless CarPlay/Android Auto; I will happily go without that to get a proper navigation system (which is one big reason I ordered the Tucson instead of the Santa Fe). And thanks to Monica and Phil!

I am a car enthusiast and watch a ton of car reviews everyday. It’s the first time I heard the reason why the Hyundai/Kia’s 10.25 screens do not come with wireless carplay/android auto. Great job, Zach and Andrea!!! BTW I own a Kia Sorento PHEV Prestige here in the US, grabbed it when I found it at a dealer once I heard the cars started reaching the dealers early Oct last year.

I've been looking at swapping for a sorento phev. What are you looking at as far as combined mpgs?
@tonyw2167
@tonyw2167 2 года назад
@@microtransactions2661 52 lifetime mpg out of total 4000 miles driven (I plugged in as much as possible), but it used to be 62 mpg before I took a few road trips from New York to Boston totaling 1000 miles approximately without the chance to charge the car. In summary your driving routines and charging habits determine the ultimate mpgs for plug-in vehicle. I also expect mpgs to improve when weather gets warmer.

Thanks so much (and to your Mom) for this video. As you say, it is impossible to get to test drive the PHEV model. Certainly, I have driven the HEV version and it is terrific. The only downside is having to think about waiting a year for the car! It is vastly better value than the RAV 4 Prime.

As an owner of an HEV Lux in Canada, this segment is super confusing now with Hybrids and Plugin Hybrids in the fold. Add in feature sets across the competition and its difficult shopping between them. You guys did a great job organizing the pros and cons of all the vehicles in this segment and im sure your viewers always return for quality content like this example.

Toyota corrected the height-adjustable passenger seat in the 2022 RAV4 Prime. Both Kia and Hyundai have compelling PHEVs, but I wish they had a bit more EV range and came with spare tires. I like the looks and color options of the Sportage a little bit more than the Tuscon. These vehicles are great values, however, and will both sell well.

Be sure to also test drive both options before reserving your vehicle of choice! I test drove both the Tucson and Rav4 hybrids (PHEVs were not available on the lot) and the Tucson won out by a landslide. The Rav4 engine sounds like a straining engine that reminds me of a child trying to get chores done whereas the Tucson had more pep and just got to work. For those with kids, you know 😅 Road noise was pretty noticeable and the interior felt ‘cheaper’ in a Rav4 as well.

Thanks for the great review. PHEV is what makes the most perfect sense when mating an ICE to the electric motor, that's why they sold like hotcakes. Hyundai and Toyota will compete in this very competitive segment with their nicely engineered products. Except for the lack of physical volume knob and spare tire, Tucson's overall package is more attractive than those of the RAV4. That's until Toyota have a complete redesign of the RAV4 in a few years.

Awesome review! Agree that the white looks fantastic. The Tucson, to me, is the BEST looking compact SUV on the market (call me crazy, but I somehow get Lambo Urus vibes). It's edgy without being over the top. Interior is beautiful. I have a Mazda CX-5 and driving is fine, but looking at a Hybrid for better fuel efficiency with rising gas prices and 184hp is at least 20~30hp shy of where I'd like it. The Tucson Hybrid or PHEV is on my wish list (or the Genesis GV70 but wish they had a hybrid.) Keep up the amazing reviews!

They removed some small features like wireless charging but added a larger screen. I took my Tucson PHEV on an 8000 km (5000 mile) road trip from Calgary to Nashville and back. It was mostly Interstate and Trans-Canada highway driving. There was only one opportunity to charge the vehicle in the whole trip. Even so, fuel economy was acceptable: 7.6L/100km (31.1 US MPG). Range per tank, with an uncharged battery, was only about 500 km (300 miles) because the physically large battery means a smaller fuel tank. If long road trips are your thing, the HEV would serve you better, but the PHEV did acceptably well even when charging was not conveniently available.

One of the cons I hear about the Hyundai/Kia PHEVs is that the engine comes on ALL THE TIME even in EV mode for various reasons (temperature, engine maintenance, etc..). This is something that's often important to PHEV owners as many want to operate them as BEVs and use the engine for longer trips.
@andreaspencer9813
@andreaspencer9813 2 года назад
When you start up the vehicle, you hear the engine going on and when it's idling, but I got up to 100 km/h on the highway and was in pure EV mode. When you accelerate quickly, the gas engine comes on. We have a follower who bought a Tucson PHEV and he has had it for about 6 weeks now and has never purchased gas, he has a pretty clean drive everyday.
@HaNguyen-cv5qc
@HaNguyen-cv5qc 2 года назад
Does it have an electric heater or it needs to start the engine every time you want to heat the cabin? I think it's impossible to drive it in pure EV mode in the winter if it needs to use the ICE for heating the cabin....Am I correct?
@dfd6787
@dfd6787 2 года назад
Depends on weather. In Summertime it operates very much as BEV, and does not require engine to cool down interior. But winter time the ICE is almost always on, unless you have driven in sport mode and everything is moderately in a good temperature. Overall - expect more ICE in wintertime (depends on your local temperatures).

I decided not to wait for Hyundai or get the shaft from Toyota and picked up a new 2020 Honda Clarity in White Rock well below the cost of the Hyundai. Its a fantastic PHEV if you don't need an SUV. Then Tucson appears with an engineering perspective that outshines the Prime: real 4-wheel system, non-clamorous turbo, not a CVT, not to mention the step-above design of exterior and interior... There is definitely more value with the Tucson, the Prime just can't compete feature to feature on the base trim. My Mom had a 2018 RAV4 and she just can't believe how much more she gets with Hyundai, it just feels more premium to her.

Be sure to also test drive both options before reserving yours! I test drove both hybrids (PHEVs were not available on the lot) and the Tucson won out by a landslide. The Rav4 engine sounds like a straining engine that reminds me of a child trying to get chores done whereas the Tucson had more pep and just got to work. Road noise was pretty noticeable and the interior felt ‘cheaper’ in a Rav4 as well.

The turn signals down low in the bumper is a head scratcher. Hyundai Kia and Infiniti do this. They are hard to see in heavy traffic. Seems like car designers go out of their way to be different and end up making things worse sometimes.

Between the Hybrid version vs the PHEV, which one do you think drives better as far as acceleration, fuel economy, & value ? Thanks Motormouth.
@andreaspencer9813
@andreaspencer9813 2 года назад
They are both very good, there isn't a huge difference between the two.When you are in EV mode in the Tucson PHEV and you accelerate quickly and need that extra power, the gas engine comes on and it takes a moment for everything to work together. However, there's plenty of power I like the PHEV because if I am doing short trips like my Mom does, she can have a pretty clean drive everyday and will rarely need to buy gas which is what she wants. If you do longer trips everyday, the Hybrid might be a better option.

An owner of Tucson PHEV here. I haven't owned the RAV4 but I've owned the Corolla 2020 HEV. While I am quite happy with the Tucson overall, one thing that many reviews, including this one, fails to mention is that the gearbox performance isn't as good as on the Toyota. It can be slightly jerky at low speeds with the ICE running. On full EV mode it's less noticeable. Yes, with the e-CVT you get more noise, but the ride is butter-smooth. It's one of the things Hyundai should improve. However, I'm ok with it and it doesn't bother me that much really, given the acceleration performance you get. Also, the Tucson does not have an electric heat pump - so you have to accept the fact that it runs the ICE to warm up the cabin. Luckily, when there is sufficient battery charge, it does not seem to power the wheels, so the RPMs always stay at around 1200-1500. So it does not consume a lot of gas, but should be mentioned nevertheless. I live in the Nordics, so quite a cold climate here. I have the second trim level (called Style in Europe - it's the first one that adds the 10,25" screen) and it does not come with any kind of remote start functionality (there is only unlock, lock, start charging, stop charging). All things considered, it's still a very capable all-rounder and a great vehicle for this price point.

Thanks for this video. The problem with Tucson is that the gas engine starts for any reason in «pure» electric mode. The RAV4 is a lot better on electric mode. The 87 km of electric range mentioned for the next gen of the Outlander PHEV has been evaluated with WLTP standard. Electric range with EPA standard will be reduced by about 15%.

I placed a deposit on a Tucson Limited PHEV back on June 06, 21. I also placed a deposit on a VW ID.4 Pro S AWD in Sep, 21. Still waiting on both (either)... In the meantime, I was able to find a local Kia dealership that has 3 GT-Line AWD EV6s due for delivery on March 6th. I went ahead and put a deposit on one of those as well. Honestly, the PHEV Tucson makes the most sense for our needs, but I'm kinda hoping that EV6 makes it here (Colorado) first.

@davidgiles9751 Год назад
@@andreaspencer9813 Hi Andrea, I'm revisiting this after re-watching this video review. It's a very very very long story, but the short of it is, we ended up with both the EV6 and the Tucson PHEV. I had been without a personal car since July of 21', when I had sold my VW Alltrack (long story behind that as well), and had been banking extra cash every month to use as a nice down payment on whatever we decided to buy. Well, we purchased the EV6 on Feb 26th, and a week later we received an email from Hyundai USA stating the Tucson was (finally) scheduled for delivery. We ended up trading in my Wife's (aging) 2013 Acura RDX and buying the Tucson on April 18th. If you would have told me 10 years ago that I would end up with two "electrified" Korean cars, I would have laughed at you. However, both cars have been absolutely fantastic, and we really lucked in to being able to get two new vehicles in the midst of rising gas prices and a vehicle shortage the likes of which I have never seen. The EV6 is my daily driver, and my Wife drives the Tucson. We added a Grizzl-E (Canadian company) charge station to our garage so we can charge both vehicles at home as necessary. My Wife is religious about charging the Tucson when the battery is low, and is averaging 160mpg with it so far (has only had to fill it up once). She loves driving the Tucson, as it has a more "conventional" feel to it, and I love the EV6. She also has back problems, and the Tucson is easier for her to get in/out of. I could go on and on (did I say it's a long story...), but I can honestly say that if you're considering either vehicle, they are both excellent choices. Anyway, I love your guys' reviews!!! The back and forth banter makes them really entertaining, and your husband/wife perspectives make for very well rounded vehicle reviews. PS: Needless to say I cancelled the ID.4 order and VW refunded my deposit with no issues.

My advice to car buyers is, if you own a good car outright today (like me) with no monthly payments, keep it for another 2-3 years. Wait till this chip shortage and model availability issues are long gone. In 3 years they'll be many more PHEV model choices, better dealership negotiating ability etc.. and you have the time now to put cash away for this new PHEV purchase.

The top BZ4X is the same price as the top Rav4 Prime here in Belgium. Like you said, Toyota can't keep this price for the Prime... I'm doubting between a Plugin or the EV. My test of the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid was horrible. The test car only had 1500 miles but had a lot of technical issues when driving. Also the 1.6l engine was very loud. I told the dealership and they were aware of the technical issues. Why not make sure you give potential buyers a good working test car... then I start to think how reliable is this car... anyway I like your reviews. Although I'm from Belgium it's informative to see how mobility is on the other side of our planet ;-)

I was wondering if the side mirrors are power folding on the PHEV Tucson. I have a 2020 Santa Fe Limited and really like it but I have a property I recently bought with two single garage doors and would like a vehicle with power folding side mirrors. I’m thinking of going a little smaller with the Tucson and while making a vehicle change go PHEV. By the way my Santa Fe is white and I also love how it contrasts with all the black.
