This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new 2023 Toyota Prius hybrid versus the updated 2023 Lexus UX hybrid compact car and crossover. Two hybrids battle it out in our comparison this week!
The Lexus UX vs. the Toyota Prius, which one is your favourite?
Both the Toyota Prius and Lexus UX have a 2L 4-cylinder engine matched to an eCVT, the Toyota Prius has a little more power a combined 196 horsepower for AWD and 194 horsepower FWD, the Lexus UX a combined 181 horsepower. In Canada, both standard AWD but FWD and AWD options are available in the US. The all-new 2023 Toyota Prius is 4” longer than the Lexus UX but the UX offers more overall height and is slightly wider. There is more front row headroom in the Prius, second row headroom is about the same. The Prius offers an inch more front row legroom and almost 2” more second row legroom. Cargo space is a little bit bigger for the Prius at 20.3 cubic feet compared to the UX at 17.1 cubic feet.
Features the Toyota Prius is missing that the Lexus UX has are a power passenger seat, a head-up display and the larger 8” driver display. The Prius has an available fixed glass roof and the UX a standard moonroof.
Both get great fuel economy, but the Toyota Prius does better 4.8L/100 km, 49 MPG city and 4.7L/100 km, 50 MPG highway. The UX 5.7L/100 km, 41 MPG city and 6.2L/100 km, 38 MPG highway.
In Canada, the Toyota Prius starts at $36,490 CAD and the top Limited trim $42,990 CAD.
In the US, the base FWD model starts at $27,450 USD, AWD $28,850 USD. XLE FWD $30,895 USD, AWD $32,295 USD. Limited FWD $34,465 USD and AWD $35,865 USD.
There are plenty of Lexus UX trims to choose from Premium $41,450 CAD, F Sport Design $43,100 CAD, Elegance Special Edition $43,250 CAD, F Sport Series 1 $44,850 CAD,
Luxury $46,200 CAD, F Sport Series 2 $50,950 CAD.
In the US the Lexus UX FWD $35,925 USD, AWD $37,325 USD. Premium FWD $38,385 USD, AWD $39,785 USD. F Sport Design FWD $38,385 USD, AWD $39,785 USD. F Sport Handling FWD $43,355 USD, AWD $44,755 USD.

Well as far as the UX goes, it can be whatever you would like it to be, it is marketed as an “Urban crossover” but in my opinion it is just a regular hatchback and we love it! It’s a nice little vehicle to go in and around town, easy to drive, easy to park, excellent turning radius and also good enough to go on long trips. When asked my wife if her 2019 UX was a crossover or a hatchback? She responded, “It’s a hatchback!that thinks is a crossover”

The Prius has Toyota Safety Sense 3.0; UX=2.5; the Prius has the 5th generation hybrid system; UX=4th. If Lexus wants to charge extra for the UX, fine--but they need to at least provide state-of-the-art Toyota safety and hybrid technology. Maybe by the time the Corolla Cross Hybrid comes out (1 year after the official announcement?), the UX will be updated. Keep up the good work, Zach and Andrea...

Have had my 2021 UXh Fsport2 Atomic Silver for 1-1/2 yrs now. Best car I've ever owned! And it's a crossover disguised as a station wagon. It replaces the CT-200h which I previously owned. It's SO much better. The ride, handling & comfort are top notch. I've driven some other Lexus models and this is the best. (Unless you really need more space). It's also the only Lexus that burns regular gas!

OK, Zack and Andrea... I know the 5G Prius is priced closer to the UX, but the Corolla Cross is the one that matches the UX in almost every stat. CC and UX are within 1" / 25mm of each other in length, height, width and wheelbase and the new '23 Hybrid CC uses the same NA-2.0L HSD combo as the 5G Prius, except the CCH uses the updated tuning (196hp combined w/AWD) while UX still uses the non-updated version w/181hp. The other difference between the Corolla Cross Hybrid and the UX that's not related to being a luxury vs. mainstream brand (materials, equipment, insulation, hardware craftsmanship...) is that the Corolla Cross has an upright rear vs. the raked rear of the UX, which is more noticeable in rear cargo room, same as between the Infiniti QX50 (upright) and QX55 (raked). Suspect the UX is in its' last days, staying until '25 MY at most before being replaced by a slighly larger 2G CT, with all the elements from the 5G Prius + a slightly more tuned (200-210hp combined) version of the NA-2.0L HSD combo and quite more interior room.

Thanks for another great review. For me it’s the “not-a-cross over” UX. Interior sound is quieter. I like the better ride, rear wiper, interior look, and the Lexus badge. I’ll give up a little fuel economy and power for those things.

I would choose the Prius. It's quirky, more efficient and more pragmatic overall. I think that the Prius would have more cross shopping with the Corrolla hybrid and Camry hybrid. The Corrolla hybrid has lower price and has more a conventional feel which I think will appeal to alot of people. The The Rav4 Hybrid has the Corrolla Cross hybrid to keep it company.

I appreciate the excellent and enjoyable review as always, although you were both more business-like today! Very good choices for comparison. As a Lexus RX owner, I would give the nod to the UX because it looks classy inside and out, but your rear seat size review convinced me that the UX would not be a viable option. As it is, the RX has an embarrassing 3rd row that is only usable to extend the cargo area, which is why my wife and I chose it. But, with the captains chairs, it is only fit for 4 adults. But the UX looks like it will only fit 2 adults. And, by the way, for my wife and I, a power passenger seat with front/back and up/down is a must. Good to see you both!

As far as your hatchback/crossover argument goes, I’d have to put my vote on hatchback. I work at a used car dealership that carries all brands, and have seen the UX parked in a row of Corollas Camrys and Prii…couldn’t even tell the height difference, if there is one. It blended right in. I’ve also seen it parked between a pre-gen GLA and its blood brother, the QX30. They all look the same size too, so I’m calling them all hatchbacks. You’d have to park a UX next to like, an 80’s Corolla to have it actually look the part of a crossover.

The Prius has a funky 7 inch driver display and no rear wiper. Without the 19" wheels you sit low to the ground but the highway mileage is great. The Prius is expensive and add in 8% financing makes it even more money. How about a cost comparison with a Corrolla Hybrid or Corrolla Cross?

Team Motormouth, Can anyone explain why Toyota has kept 2 different 2.0 Hybrid powertrains in production and then given the weaker, less efficient one to the luxury model?? All the credit Toyota Canada gains for making AWD a base feature on the Prius is deducted for the silly 19" rims which rob fuel efficiency and ride comfort on our pitiless potholed streets. 🤨

The 19" wheels for the prius are 195 which are narrow and shave off almost 7 mpg from the LE trim. Not just that both the XLE and limited trims have less storage space and lack a spare tire. But, taking into consideration the new exterior look of the Prius, revamped interior & glass roof w/more cargo space. Prius wins this round. The definite draw back is the fact that the Prius sits lower, which of course the UX mitigates that quite well.

UX, like others, is a tallish hatchback called a crossover. I like the Prius better. Overall, in some ways, I wish Lexus had a more distinguished look from some Toyotas. Hyundai does a better job distinguishing Genesis models from Hyundais where I feel I see a somewhat modified Toyota in the interior space of the Lexus US (and NX and even RX to an extent). I know that Lexus is more refined and the exterior has Lexus signatures but the interior could be better IMO. But the UX is lacking in interior space and the Prius interior has more flow and way more space.

I suspect the 5G Prius footprint on the C platform will be used for a 2G CT to replace the UX. The UX footprint on same C platform will be left for Corolla Cross alone (within 1" / 25mm of all size stats), while giving the UX replacement something larger.

Other than the badge there seems to be no reason to overpay and get a UX over the new Prius.

hard to compare in Canada, we still don't have a price for the Prius and it will only be able in two trims in Canada. Toyota really isn't making friends in Canada anymore.

It is a marketing trick with all these hybrid models. But marketologists do not say that after three years of using hybrid models you lose your garantee on battery and there is no fuel economy at all because of the battery deterioration. The same process happens with all smartphones: after three years and your battery has only 50% capacity. So answer what is better Toyota Prius hybrid or Lexus UX hybrid is very simple take a regular gas model like Toyota Camry TRD 3.5 with six cylinders or Lexus NX-RX turbo models and get all this marketing noodles out of your ears! Otherwise, with such marketing, you will soon start eating flies and grasshoppers instead of meat.

Lexus UX and Kia Niro both have an identity crisis: hatchback or SUV. 🤣 IMO, both are hatchbacks. For me the UX is overpriced for what it offers. I think the Corolla Cross, Prius, and Niro LX are more closely matched competitors.

Big point! The Prius does not have the (very) ugly big grill front end that will eventually identify era cars (Honda, et al) like 80's shag haircuts.

Poor Zack! He is confused the Prius is a crossover or not. 😂 I think Prius is a winner of the gas mileage, exterior design, cargo space and the price. 👍🏻👍🏻☕️☕️

This is most likely the last year for the UX. I bet Lexus had enough parts to make 5 or 10 thousand cars, that's why they made a 23 UX.

@@naveenthemachine I don't understand the existence of the luxury sub-compact segment. The QX30, UX, GLB (I think) and whatever the BMW counterpart is are all too small imo. Any company would be better off killing them off, again, in my opinion. Say what you want how one is more luxurious than the other, or how one is bigger and better than the other. But this segment, to simply put, should be gone to the grave.
