I think this may be a great lens for street photography on an APS-C camera. It is very small and light, doesn't draw too much attention, and the focal length is like 25mm on FF. Very nice addition to the I series superb line.

It's decent at .27 magnification ratio but the price is just ridiculous for an F4 compact lens. Old sony 10-18 f4 covers full frame sensor well and the 10-20 F4 for apsc is also a reasonable alternative with some cropping. Outside of vlogging, this lens has no real purpose that I can see

I could see this potentially as a good vlogging lens for the upcoming ZV-E1, especially if you are planning on using the in camera stabilization features that are going to crop quite a bit. There’s no comparable focal length for full frame this light for the e-mount. Also, 17mm is not a bad focal length as a secondary travel lens assuming you have a more “normal” focal length.

@careylymanjones
@careylymanjones Год назад
@@BoxxyFan Why would you want a zoom for vlogging if you have a prime of appropriate focal length? Primes are usually lighter than zooms. And primes are usually sharper than zooms, unless the zoom is from a premium line, such as a G Master. And primes are usually significantly cheaper than a zoom that can match their image quality. If you're hand holding the camera at arm's length, lighter is better.
@BoxxyFan
@BoxxyFan Год назад
@@careylymanjones the 100 grams extra of the 16-35/4 is negligible. If you cant hold that at arms length then you should see a doctor. Much more versatile range and goes wider, and its a G lens which is better than Sonys standard zooms. Maybe this 17mm prime would actually have something going for it if it were faster at f/2.

I’m buying it for sole purpose of making vlog videos, I have found for my own self that majority of my Vlogs even though I’ve used a 12 to 24 the 2.8 GM lens and 24 mm 1.4. that I’ve really noticed the sharpness in the Sigma Lens is over the last year so much that I’ve started to switch out my lenses to Sigma I’m feeling that an F4. Is about exactly where I end up with a lot of my settings, so that there’s a decent, crisp, contrast of depth and clarity behind me but at the same point, I also noticed that I end up filming everything between 16-18mm -> so I feel that this lens is going to be a perfect fit and I like the compactness smaller is always better and lighter is even more exciting especially when you’re blogging I noticed that those two pieces are what get me to pick up my Vlog camera more often. Yes, there is the ZV1M2 but I still don’t feel that I get to benefits out of it like I do with a ZVE1 Full frame. Just my two cents but I thought I would try man great video definitely what is the sealer for me to make my final decision. Thank you very much.

to answer your initial question, i don't think the 17mm f4 belongs in the same series as the 20mm f2. i think there are in fact two distinct line ups in the i-series that suit two different types of photographers. one line is the 17mm f4, 24mm f3.5, 45mm f2.8 and the 90mm f2.8, the other is the 20mm f2, 35mm f2, 50mm f2, and the 65mm f2. apart from the difference in aperture there are also a couple of distinct design features (the af/mf switch for instance) that differentiate the two. the first of the two series might be better suited for travel, or documentary style shooting, where a bright aperture is a bit of a non issue. also of note is that all the lenses of this first lineup have very low focus breathing which makes them quite usable for video work as well, particularly on a gimbal, since they are also very close in size and weight (with the exception of the 90mm). the second line up might be more interesting for those who are less concerned with size and weight and want a bit more flexibility in terms of aperture. I happen to own both series, but for work (architecture photography, some portrait work and exhibition documentations) i mostly carry along two bodies one with the 24mm f3.5 and one with the 45mm f2.8 and the 90mm in the bag. I don't own a car, go everywhere by train with my folding bicycle and put all the gear including two ad100 strobes a tripod and a laptop into one of those wotancraft bags that can be attached to a bicycle so size and weight are of importance to me. I might even get the 17mm for those rare occasions when I need a wider shot. for professional work i never needed a brighter aperture. the brighter i series lenses I only use when I am working on personal stuff at home, I almost never bring them along for work.

I see it as being in roughly the same category as the RF 16 f/2.8, which I own: super compact ultrawide to throw in your bag/for traveling if you don't shoot ultrawide much, but might encounter an opportunity. I prefer the Canon, since I'm okay shooting astro with it, it's wider, it's cheaper, and it's faster. But I could see this being popular.
@4sapphireb
@4sapphireb Год назад
I noticed that the faster the lens the more challenged the image quality with vignetting coma and astigmatism. With wide lenses how fast do we need to go? I shoot astro and find I can get by fine with f2 as with my 1.4 and 1.8 I have to step down for “perfection” I have the sigma 65mm and the build quality is outstanding. The images are actually too sharp and I have to dull my shoots afterwards. All newer full framed bodies have stabilization and you may not need the speed. I am a manual focus person and I don’t like the feel of the manual focus ring as it’s too close to the lens hood. That being said the lens hood is awesome, I could stand on it and it wouldn’t brake.

Would prefer them to release an 18.5mm F2 for Sony APS-C which would equate to about 28mm in full frame terms...Also F4 is weird starting place. Sigma is creating alot of "unique" lenses lately but we still don't have the essential primes yet

And landscape photographers commonly stop down to f/5.6 or f/8 for more sharpness and less vignette. It would do nicely for vlogging on the new ZV-E1. With the stabilization on, the crop would bring it down to about 20mm equivalent, which is very nice for vlogging.

I can see myself using it as a street lens on a crop body. And as part of a street/travel kit for full frame - 17mm f/4; TTartisan 28mm f/5.6; Sigma 90mm f/2.8. Ultra light, ultra small. It looks like Gordon Laing from CameraLabs has tested the Sigma 17mm F4 DG DN with the Sony ZV-E1 using the Dynamic SteadyShot feature in a vlog setup. It turns this 17mm into roughly a 24mm lens... not that impressed tbh. Maybe the Sony ZV-E2 or the Sony A7c2 will crop less for good stabilisation, but I'd say Micro Four Thirds (with the 9mm f1.7) is superior for now for anyone looking to get great vlog quality in a light-weight setup while not sacrificing stabilisation or video performance.

thank you very much for the illustrative review this both small prime! Whereas I don't have any issues with the parallel released nifty-fifty, here my impressions and minus points about the 17 mm (translated by google, pardon for any imprecise wordings therefore...): A short focal length, packed relatively compactly, is a good idea. Although the image quality is very good, except for the strong distortion in RAW (which costs image quality when corrected!), I have two points of criticism - the lens is actually much "too small" - measured against the 20 mm 2.0, its size would have been okay and would have fitted in very well with the series, at least with a speed of 2.8 - And I also don't understand that sigma introduced another additional FILTER SIZE of 55 mm with this lens... IMPORTANT: that's why the classic B+W S-Pro filters (clear / UV) don't fit - the tube on which the lens hood is attached using a bayonet lock is narrower than the broader filter. Consequence: the filter protrudes slightly over the edge, the attachable bayonet hood no longer fits in! So I had to buy a new B+W Master Clear Filter for 40 E, which makes the following point even more important: - Measured by the mechanical aspects and the low "speed", I find the price too high, actually it should be at least 100 € cheaper I don't understand why Sigma (like many or actually all photo manufacturers unfortunately) doesn't ask the users beforehand about their wishes. In any case, I would have said that I find so much compactness for so little speed problematic. A bit bigger, but F 3.5 or 2.8 would have been great! I now use it as a second lens next to, for example, the Canon TS - E 17 mm shift lens - at least the focal length and perspective match So, dear company Sigma: set up a customer advisory board, then everything will be better
@noenken
@noenken 6 месяцев назад
Sigma specifically designed this lens to fit the other three pre-existing compact i-series lenses, the 24mm f/3.5, the 45mm f/2.8 and the 90mm f/2.8. Those also all have the 55mm filter size.
@networm64
@networm64 Год назад
Once again you prove yourself as an honest reviewer nailing the points on this lens. I have no idea what Sigma was thinking designing this lens. If it was a cheap plastic fantastic costing around 200$ and weighting 100g then it was a no brainer. But with so h a premium quality why didn't make it f2.8 at least? Or if it was going to be f4 then why didn't make it wider to be more attractive? 12mm or even 14mm f4 was a great option.
@careylymanjones
@careylymanjones Год назад
It's a natural pair with the ZV-E1 as a vlogging lens. 17mm gives you room for the stabilization crop to bring it down to about 20mm equivalent. That's about as good as it gets for vlogging. The lens is very light for an all metal and glass lens, too. And if you keep a crop body in your bag, it a 25mm equivalent, which is fine for street or landscape.

It's nice that it's very compact and light but if I were a vlogger I would rather go for the Sigma 16-28 f/2,8 for 300 bucks more. It's still a decent lightweight lens at 450 grams but twice this lens. As you said, this is nice and compact for street photography but not really a great focal length for typical street so it sure is a weird lens but maybe some people will get use out of it.

Perfect pairing with Sony ZV-E1 where you can crank up the ISO without worrying about video quality or stabilisation. I think a really great comparison is in fact the Panasonic 9mm f1.7 on M43! Think about it - it's the equivalent of 18mm f3.5 on full-frame. I'd love to see a comparison between the Sigma and the Panasonic, I think the results would be very similar - also in terms of stabilisation. It seems like M43 would be superior, both in terms of weight, video quality (using a Panasonic camera like the G9) and stabilisation. But without testing you really won't know for sure. Please somebody test the Sony ZV-E1 + Sigma 17mm F4 DG DN against the Panasonic GH5/GH6/G9/GX9/etc + 9mm f1.7!
