The following content is related to the July 2013 issue of Guitar World. For the full range of interviews, features, tabs and more, pick up the new issue on newsstands now, or in our online store.
Two of the most important and effective elements in creating expressive improvisations are the incorporation of dynamics and groove. Dynamics-the use of variations in volume and articulation that can span from quiet, delicate and gentle to loud, forceful and aggressive-and groove-the way in which a player chooses to place the notes against the backbeat-are both key aspects of musicality that come into play.
Awareness of one's rhythmic pacing, or time, and the way in which it connects with a rhythm section is among the most important aspects of ensemble playing. It's very beneficial to record yourself both when practicing and when playing with other musicians. When you listen back, you'll be able to listen more objectively and hear if you're playing in the pocket or if you're rushing or slowing down, and this will serve to heighten your awareness to your groove overall.

HEY EVERYBODY> I am a Nashville pro. Been playing for almost 40 years now. This lesson Mike is giving hear? Is the most important lesson you will ever learn. Right here? What he is talking about? Is what music really is. He is giving you the secret. It is NOT about notes, it is NOT about technique. You do have to learn that stuff, but what he is telling you is the key to it all. You practice til you make everything you play feel good to YOU and feel good to OTHERS. If you try to play a fast line, and it doesn't feel good to you? Then it won't feel good to others. You have to practice until you can make it feel good to you, then let others hear.

find your own voice. "defined as much as what you can't do as what you can do."... WOW.... that floored me. Thank you Mike.

Mike Stern is simply amazing. He is becoming my favorite guitarist of all time. His fluidity is just awesome. Truly inspirational. What a great lesson. He makes it look easy.....sign of a genius. His phrasing and dynamics! Man, I can't say enough good things. The other cool thing about Mike is that he finds the good in all styles, he's not a jazz snob like some guys are. He is truly an innovator mixing jazz, blues, and unusual chromatic lines......just awesome.....like a horn play but on a guitar!

One you have good time, good dynamics (emotional content), and good tone, that's 80 % of the battle. After that you can play row your boat and still be interesting.

well said, mr. stern. the zen of guitar: "be aware" i remember my teacher telling me that after a year of lessons. and like a zen teaching, with each year of playing it makes more and more sense.

That D major tried over Cmin7 was brilliant. I love Mike because of stuff like that.

+moonkin111 Haha! I had it playing in the background and as soon as I heard that I went "woah wait what was THAT?" and went back and watched it a few times and I think it's what you're talking about somewhere in 6:35-6:40. Mike is the man.

Yes I totally wanted to steal that exact section and did! It's the same motif based idea as playing triad pairs either one step above or below the root key. It's a great sound!

Mike Stern is definitely the best guitarist to learn about grooving from. Miles nicknamed him 'Time.' Miles was known to play with a few folks who could be considered to have good time, lols.

Refreshing to see this video amongst the millions of 'watch how fast I can burn through this scale' videos. This guy creates rainbows whereas a lot of other guitarists are only concerned with creating hail storms.

so true...he himself rarely grooves when not playing blues stuff.just 8ths up and down starting on the 1 of a bar in the ever same patterns, with the strings not really resonating ...wes is surely a different kind of groove.amazing guy though
