Good work. I've been using Red Dot in everything from .25 acp to 30-06 (look up "The Load") for many decades. If I had only one powder it'd be Red Dot.

I love red dot. You can pretty much just scoop a 9mm case in and tap a little off the top and stuff a 124 in it. A .7cc dipper is 4.6gr and it's a good hot little load in my carbines.

Red Dot is my go-to 45 powder. I have not used it with other calibers. Alliant website and current published reload data does not show Red Dot or Green Dot handgun loads; however, the old (1981) Hercules (who marketed Red Dot, Green Dot, Unique, Reloder 7, Bullseye, Herco, Blue Dot, Hercules 2400 prior to Alliant) catalog does have load data for handgun calibers with these powders popular in that time period. Only a few generic 9mm loads are published. For example: 9mm "124 FMC", OAL 1.1", Red Dot 4.0 gr, 1065 f/s, 26,900 cup. Not publishing current handgun loads for Red or Green Dot seems to suggest Alliant is pushing their other powders for handgun reloads reserving the "dots" for shotshells. For the record, they claim Green Dot has a mild recoil which I find this is absolutely the case with any Green Dot load I've tried as compared to say Red Dot. I use Green Dot for my 40S&W loads to help control the '40 flip'.

One year later: I did more testing of Red Dot in 45 Auto and 40S&W for the first time. The mission today was to ensure Red Dot loads in 45 Auto and 40S&W would cycle the M&P Shield 45, Kahr CW45 and M&P Shield 40. Bullet weights were 185 in 45, 180 and 155 in 40S&W. All rounds fed, fired and ejected. I also had some 45 loads with 700-X and noticed its recoil was noticeably stronger than the Red Dot loads. I don't have any velocity measuring equipment but based on today's results which are consistent with previous Red Dot testing, I'll continue using it in these calibers. I have other powders for 9mm, 380 Auto and the magnums.
