"The look in my cousin's eyes was so intense!" Dub scene in which Amara and Michelle meet. *Disclaimer: I don't own Sailor Moon. *Also I don't HATE the dub. But you have to admit the cousins stuff was hardly believable :P
"...guess it runs in the family..." "...your cousin..." "...guess you come from a spectacular gene pool..." "...the look in my cousin's eyes..." "...just because we are family..." I'm sure if they could they would've added a screen shot of their birth certificates and family tree. Oh! And a blood test scene, just to be clear.
Lolll gotta love how homophobic the US is! They'd rather show an incestuous relationship than a lesbian relationship. 🤣 But when you look at more modern American shows like Regular Show, The Amazing World of Gumball and Adventure Time, they've slowly started to incorporate LGBTQ themes. Took them long enough.
well from what I heard is that the eng dub did change them to be "cousins" instead of in like in the original Japanese were they r lover but since the dubbers couldn't change the animation ppl could tell they have a relationship other than cousins
They're hiding it very poorly though lol. It's like when you're lying and you're being very Very VERY specific just to make sure that everyone believes you (guess what? That's why they don't) what an amazing cover up~ lol
To be fair, not everyone knows all their cousins or knows if they even have cousins. One would probably have a vague idea that they exist though so idk haha.
@@rosenmael9724 Yeah, especially in the earlier days if one's aunt or uncle had children that were born out of wedlock it might be that one didn't hear about these relatives until well into adulthood. At least today I hope there isn't that much stigma.
@weedcat420 I actually became quite close with a cousin I didn't even know I had back when I was a child. Not that we're best friends or "Amara and Michelle" kind of close. 😹
To be fair. She sounds like she's attempting to give a solid performance but then gets slapped in the face with a mountain of chunky dialogue and is told "fit it all in before the other character speaks". She sounds like she's getting caught up reading the rest of her line
@@supervivo7069 DiC was kinda rushed too, Usagi's original VA Tracey Moore left because she was also the voice director and DiC were complaining she was spending too much time recording everyone because she allowed multiple takes. But yeah they did at least allow a few takes overall whereas Cloverway were so rushed because of the liscense expiring soon, if the first take matched the lip sync, it was used.
Hey, guys, I don't know if the dub makes it clear or not, but they're cousins. Definitely cousins. Not anything else other than cousins. They never have been, and never will be anything more than cousins. Who clearly have an incestuous love for one another HELLO!
Now it sounds like they are lesbians who just met and really want to get to know each other intensely but they have lives and Sailor duties to perform so there is a lot of tension not because they hate each other like in that tired trope but because they want to be together that much.
Haruka: "Why does my CWI voice sound like I'm battling sadness or depression?!" Michiru: "And why does my CWI voice sound like a burnt-out middle-aged woman?! We're 16 and 17 for God's sake! Thank God that we now have our VIZ dub voices!" Haruka: "I know right! My voice didn't really sound like a masculine 17 year old..." Michiru: "And my voice didn't sound like an elegant 16 year old either..." Usagi: "Are we still talking about cats?!"
@@sailorkitten9633 Michiru / Michelle and Mrs Tsukino share the same voice actress in the CWi dub lol .. that may explain the burnt out middle aged woman
Anddddd you have to thank them for at least releasing the uncut version of season 3 and 4. So while the audio and script has been changed, the animation hasn't been, so you get to see everything.
"How about we talk over hot chocolate?" "No thanks, I've made up my mind for good" Amara's finally starting that diet, guys. Not even her cousin can stop her now
+TMX1138 The beauty of this is that they aren't called anything like that through the whole series. They only imply it in really fun, cool and awesome ways. They are cool from H to T.
Too bad the VAs for the Viz dub ruin the entire viewing experience. I'm glad there's a new English dub that sticks to the original script, but the voice cast is beyond horrible and makes the Viz dub unbearable to watch. What a shame! They did so well with the Inuyasha dub, so why couldn't they get this one right?!
@@b1njjj95 I don't get what's wrong with the voices. All of them sound lovely and the voices were even approved by Naoko. Are the voices here any better?
Hey guys, I actually found out, after a lot of research and digging, that these two characters are cousins! I know that they don’t make it super clear in the show, and I was surprised when i found this info, since it’s never mentioned in the show, ever. Just thought you all maybe would love to know that fun fact since it was almost impossible to know!
You know, when I heard "They made them cousins to avoid the gay but it backfired because now they're incestuous lesbians" I assumed they meant "They cut out the lines directly addressing their gayness and softened things up on the dialogue end, but left all the non-explicit animation in so they're blushing and looking at each other romantically all the time" not "They used the find and replace tool to swap the word girlfriend out for cousin and did basically nothing else".
I can only imagine the hours of close minded brainstorming that gave birth to this homophobic adaptation destroying completely a well made role model relationship between two PERSONS loving each other. The worst part is that they don't actually say anything about their relationship on the original anime... EVER. Just very clever jokes that clearly imply it. Cousins... really? REALLY?!
Well, it's not really the adaptation team that were homophobic, but networks and companies didn't want shit storms from conservative parents so they chose to modify the relationship to appropriate levels, though to me all it seemed to do was make them look like they were two cousins who happened to be into each other.
Back in the day (around the 90s), I thought that the Latin American version would've encountered serious problems with the (mostly) Catholic mentality regarding same sex relationships... but that dub was actually pretty faithfull to the original Japanese script. When I finally got to watch the DiC/Cloverfield rendition, I was laughing my head off. I honestly thought that they wouldn't have an issue with H & M's relationship.
@@Sillhid I heard that you still have some gay bars in Russia. Is it like that being openly lesbian or gay isn't illegal in itself but it's stigmatised and circulating information on homosexuality (I mean in the sense of sex ed) is illegal?
I love how Amara's VA talks in no caps like Ariana Grande. I wouldn't put it past her to eschew punctuation, too. "i swear to god im so done with this cousin shit i dont know if i can even talk about it anymore i just want to eat michelle like a buffet for gods sake"
I’m kind of ironic... all the hoops they jumped through to convince us they were “cousins” because it reveals homophobia for what it is: Fear about something people with power can’t change, can’t control, and can’t understand. They lied to us, and hurt good characters and the viewers in the process. As a gay kid, I remember watching this and knowing something was up. I didn’t have the words for it, but I knew they were a couple, and this “cousin” thing was a lie. I could’ve really used representation and affirmation like that growing up. But I love that years later, everyone now knows the truth, and Uranus and Neptune are now huge gay icons and role models. Their strength as a couple preserved through decades of homophobia, and this dub can be seen for how ignorant and ridiculous it is. That’s justice.
Just even the way they talk to eachother is too intimate. Even dub. AND IT JUST SO HAPPENS THAT THESE TWO SENSHI GET REINCARNATED INTO THE SAME FAMILY OKAY
You know, if you read into what Michiru is saying about Haruka not appreciating where she's coming from, how Haruka is always running, and how Michiru doesn't want to run anymore, this could easily be interpreted as them being cousins being a lie to hide the fact that they are in a lesbian relationship; and Michiru wants to come out to everyone about the truth, but Haruka doesn't, which just makes Haruka turning Michiru down for hot chocolate an extra punch in the gut
That's similar to the interpretation in the original version, too: that the talk about coming to terms with being a Sailor Senshi is code for YOU'RE GAY.
It’s so obvious that cloverway just couldn’t stand the thought of anyone thinking that these two characters weren’t related for one second. It’s like they have to constantly drop the cousin “bomb” and like shove it in everyone’s faces lol I think they overdid it here.
The voiceover when she looked into Michelle's eyes genuinely sounded like a fan dub. Pretty overtly incestuous. I still can't believe they thought this was better than just letting them be gay.
Everyone gangsta in that voice recording studio until there's an important episode of their wedding with crucial events that they can't simply remove... what that would've been? That 'cousin's' birthday? lol
Lately I discovered these "cousin clips" out of the US-dub Sailor Moon and laughed my ass off watching those... These are suppoused to be tender romantic moments but instead they were turned into a pathetic farce with two obvious friends who are now "cousins" that have never met each other but for some reason turn damn close to each other...and Haruka's - oh, I'm sorry - Amara's voice actress does not make this fiasco any better. And as a cherry on top, the title of this video is hilarious and sums up the farce of their first meeting XD
Wow it's amazing to see two cousins meeting for the first time, although in the episode where "lita" was in their car with them, "Michelle" told her "we grew up together". Lita:"like best friends?". So yeah it's cool meeting "for the first time" so many times!
In Korea, they are not cousins, but many of the scenes with romantic dialogues were deleted. when I was a child, I felt something from them and insisted that they are lovers but my friends considered me a weirdo.
For it to be less awkward they should have just said they were "best friends" if they wanted to censorship it 🙃 this makes it more awkward we can see and feel the passion in their relationship
Lol I had the DVD for this season back in the day. It was super interesting and weird to watch this episode with the English audio but the subtitles on for the Japanese version. While most of the episodes this season just change character or attack names or make some dumb changes here and there, the dialogue for this episode is COMPLETELY different in pretty much every scene and it's crazy lol
How hard would it have been for the script to say like, "best friends". I don't know how many girl besties used to lock arms, be around each other all the time......like, that could've fixed the dub without completely ruining it for the era
Literally the only thing they changed was that they're cousins. They didn't put an _ounce_ of effort into actually altering the dialogue to make it unromantic XD
