I don't own this, just a fan Heh, what happens when a women looks too much like a handsome man XD Very funny, Poor makochan. Heh, Ami-chan is pretty defensive too
Earlier in the episode Mako talks about her insecurity about not being "feminine" enough for most people. Naturally she looks up to someone who has no trouble with that.
It's so sweet I can't even. In a world where media has often told stories of the opposite, I always love seeing women be able to build each other up like that.
Girls really do look up to people they want to be like and who make a connection with them. There is a special way they do this with women they look up to, and when those women encourage them and take up time with them, it’s a beautiful thing. I love to see this across genders, but because I remember being a girl who looked up to amazing women, this has a tender place in my heart.
Well, don’t forget, this was the anime that had Usagi receive a love letter from a female classmate and her response was to tell her very politely that she’s flattered and thrilled, but that she’s already taken and would love to be friends instead. This anime was waaaaaaay ahead of it’s time
Its a nice scene, but it also has Usagi telling the girl that it would be better for her to give the love letter to a boy. 😒 At least they fixed that part in the Viz dub.
@@victoriatorresgarcia6795 I wish I could remember. The last time I saw that episode I was twelve, but since my sister had just come out as bisexual it left a HUGE impact on me when I saw her being represented in what was basically a childrens show
@@emmawieson2121 aah dw and thanks anyways! I'm kinda the same. The last time I watched Sailor Moon I was too around 13 and recently binge watched it and was surprised how somewhat progressive it was.
@@horohorosrin I think another way - Both Ami and Makoto were in love with boys. Besides... nowadays everyone makes a strange theories about fictional characters being gay or lesbian, or another thing - Back to the times of my childhood, there was nothing like this - people have seen only the pair of very good, and caring friends when they've watched scenes between Ami and Makoto. Nowadays are much darker in than the old times :-(
NAJ0202 that moment when you have a problem with two girls being lesbians, so you make them cousins with flirty dialogue. I guess the dub was a firm believer in incest for the wincest.
This scene was silly because Haruka and Michiru were always a destined pair and Mako was so heartbroken by the rejection of her senpai that she was always overwhelmed with melancholy anytime she even looked at somebody new (for a large chunk of the story). Really it’s sweet because, as a couple, Neptune and Uranus are the embodiment of Jupiter’s aspirations: calm, capable, strong, and committed, effortlessly feminine and unbothered by others’ perceptions of whether or not they meet societal standards of womanhood. They’re the cool older couple a young woman WOULD idolize.
@@korosuke1788 not that the infatuation is silly, it’s her friends’ youthful naïveté aptly portrayed in the scene. I think it’s accurate to how teenagers would react. The show was good with that. It’s sweet.
She was ok with a girl giving a love letter to Usagi. So if she's ok with that, there must be a problem with Mako going to a date with another woman whose not her... 🤭
knowing how Japan back then treated gay ppl , it was the opposite, you can actually seek out the moral of the story "all her friends thought she was crazy and not normal" , and not being normal in Japan is almost a sin. And that is how Japan did fight the gay ppl, bcoz western countries forced their laws on Japan , this did lead to making laws that are actually socially not acceptable, just like dying hair etc. In the whole series, same sex relationship was displayed as a joke, while female+male was the highest achievement....right after defeating the evil lol
Remember the Sailor Stars showed their boobs at the beach when the Sailor friends didn't know they were women? Like were they queenr or actually women showing off their boobs?
Say what you will about Sailor Moon, I'll always give Japan kudos for maturely broaching the topic of homosexuality in a kids' show. From what I gather (as a non-fan), the relationship between Haruka and Michiru was quite frankly and tastefully depicted. And that was decades ago, too... meanwhile over here in the States we still can't have Marceline the Vampire Queen sing a few hints at Princess Bubblegum without a subsequent furor.
Well, part of our problem is that people are afraid to talk about the subject, for fear of being labeled sexists or homophobic or .. brash or whatever. There's some fairly rabid political correctness police out there, and it's a lot easier to just not bring up "sensitive" topics ... or discuss them only in the most bland and cautious terms. Frank discussions can get you censured and shunned. You get what you pay for.
It's mainly because a relationship between girls in the young years is seen as something spiritual. However, it's only okay for a certain period of time.
I find it hypocritical of Usagi to freak out over Mako supposedly having a crush on Haruka when she literally also had a crush on Haruka before realizing she was a girl.
@@alicesacco9329 I tend to run into that problem quite often. I think someones a man, and then later realize its a woman, and vice versa...Its a real problem
She thought Haruka was a man though. However in the manga Usagi had hearts in her eyes when she saw Rei for the first time and followed her. She didn't have the excuse of thinking Rei was a man. She definitely was attracted to Rei. Edit: Apparently Usagi is still attracted to Haruka after knowing she's a woman. I only knew about her crush on Rei at the time.
Read the manga for a bit, Haruka kisses Usagi and they both flirt with each other. Rini is not as annoying and she does worry about Usagi and Mamo-chan when they got into a small fight.
But Michiru flirts with Seiya in the anime anyway! Not often you tell a guy you barely just met to help you change clothes! I guess they both think if you've got it, flaunt it :P They're loyal to each other but such insane teases to everyone else.
+angryman that's so true, when I read the manga Usagi cried without being sad but it was because when she met Haruka she could feel her sadness. Haruka and Michi were a little depressed but they weren't that mean to the Sailor Scouts.
I loved Mako/Lita's relatability throughout this series. With every problem she's ever had, whether she felt like she wasn't approachable enough, strong enough, or pretty enough, it always felt like it tied into her own lack of confidence. Her episodes were always touching and understandable.
There's something about the way *this* particular style in Sailor Moon looks in some episodes that I wish fanartist would incorporate more. There's something about the way the eyes are drawn that's just cute
But it's just women cross dressing and acting. They don't do anything inappropriate in Takarazua. Tbh, I love their musicals, too, especially the ones from this era (mid 90s).
It worked in James Bond Goldfinger atleast, Pussy Galore hadnt found the right man yet til James Bond dominated her. Therefor turning her lesbian to straight when she found a real man " yeah i heard thats a real thing. Books are fun : D
Superjavi mlp you know, when I see sailor lead crow and sailor aluminum siren, I'm thinking "those would be usagi and rei, if they were brainwashed into evil". :D
I ship them too. They have Tom and Jerry's syndrome. Rei loves Usagi, its shown in episodes 38 and 45. She says that she likes her even though they argue a lot. And is the last one to die in episode 45. Its not coincidence
The gay jokes are funny and all but it's a shame that people focus so much on that and totally miss the Makoto / Haruka interaction. Makoto's reactions and growing affection towards Haruka is one of administration. The kind you have for a mentor. It's not sexual.
But to be fair, both of them were lovers in the manga! So the portrayed video affection is one of someone in a serious relationship! It’s already justified! Edit(please don’t be offended): the word for this is naive! And it’s simply being naive by saying they weren’t lovers, just because it was edited! The original says it all!
@@catenigma6352 *whoosh. Vol B is clearly talking about how the scene shows Mako having admiration towards Haruka, not romantic/sexual affections like all the other comments are implying. Like, if you stopped and thought about what was being said you would have got that.
Takarazuka (the magazine) isn't gay by nature; it's just a kind of theatre where women take on masculine roles as well (this is supposed to portray masculine positive traits without the 'threat' of it being overly sexual). But the fact that Rei hides the magazine, clearly has her thinking she will be judged gay for liking it, even if she herself isn't.
Or maybe its just a fourth wall break involving Mars' voice actress (Tomizawa Michie) which also were a active actress in Takarazuka Revue as Sumire Kanzaki from Sakura Taisen xD
Well Takarazuka Revue has a interesting connection with LGBTQ community. Several female fans wrote love letters to several actresses in Takarazuka professing their love in a lesbian kind of way. Also several revelation of an actual lesbian relationship between a otokoyaku and a musumeyaku has also rock the revue. So yes, the Takarazuka Revue picture book magazine scene with Ursagi & Rei does have a significance when it comes to lesbianism and LGBTQ.
this is so funny, it shows how bi they all are. usagi's little crush on haruka is so cute, especially her blushign around her even after she knows shes a girl.
hold up, at the end when mako is saying "you know how haruka is attractive, right?" in the english subtitles, but in the japanese she says 「なんていうか、はるかさんカッコイイだろう?」she says "kakkoii" which can mean cool, too. it can mean attractive/handsome/hot/cute but ALSO cool, and honestly with the whole context of how she says it and the music and everything it feels to me like it gives off more of the nuance of "cool" than anything, but at the same time it's been like 11 years since i've watched this series so i don't remember how the whole episode went at all LOL
I was thinking the same thing. I don't think "attractive" is the best translation here, maybe something more like "You know how Haruka has some sort of charm?" The words don't translate very directly here but the intention behind the words is kept.
@@RisenSlash the vibe i got from mako though was that it doesn’t even seem like she has a crush on her, this show was typically obvious about that sort of thing with blushing and big eyes and response hesitation, but she was very calm and composed when she said it and it didn’t seem to hint toward anything other than platonic. :)
I haven't seen the US version but did they censor this part? How did they changed the dialogue in here? Considering they've made Haruka and Michiru "cousins".
@onehundred10million And sadly, some people are still intolerant to anything LGBTQ+ in kids shows. For example, Spongebob being asexual - which actually makes sense, I mean, do people want him to be a sex seeker on a show for kids? Also there's Mr. Ratburn from Arthur, who's gay. Married a male. Some people were very hateful about it.
@@ihatethisusernameupdate TV shows, movies, comics and video games made for both kids and adults used to have sex seekers all the time in the past because that guys are horny and want to have fun with hot girls used to be seen as a completely normal and natural thing and not the negative thing it is now. Yes homosexuality is more ok now than before but male heterosexuality is seen as a way more negative thing now than in the past. Seriously everything about males wanting to enjoy females in sexual ways is seen as a bad thing in the west these days. You see way more homosexual stuff than heterosexual stuff in cartoons now so it has become the complete opposite. You saw boys be horny for hot girls and try to have fun with them in kids stuff all the time in the old days and you also saw girls wanna be attractive and sexy so the boys would pay attention to them. Now both hot girls and guys wanting to have fun with them dont exist in cartoons and other kids stuff anymore and you almost never see it in stuff for adults anymore either. Also homosexuality is like the only thing that is more ok now than during the 90s when Sailor Moon came out. There is a huge bunch of different stuff that was normal and no big deal in the 70s, 80s, 90s and the 2000s that people in the west think is racist, sexist, wrong, offensive and inappropriate now. I hate it when people try to make it sound like everything is better now than in the past because those people are usually only thinking about homosexuality and nothing else at all.
@onehundred10million Representation should be put in but not in an overwhelming excessive way. Kids should at least be taught it exists and its up to you who your gonna like or dislike.
Chibiusa, Setsuna, Hotaru, Ami, and Rei were never seduced by Haruka. Technically neither was Makoto; the subtext here is that Makoto admires her in a non romantic way, and views her as a role model.
@@maxwellg9763 Finally someone who gets it. People sexualise freaking everything. Mako's affection for Haruka is exactly what you said but people have their minds so much in the gutter they can't see something that simple anymore.
@@maxwellg9763 why are they so many dudes here being an homophobe. Its like girls dont even care if they are gay or not but u see loads of men trying to argue about how all of them are straight. No one blushes that hard out of admiration. Its like you guys have this agenda to prove that every chatacter has to be straight.
@@maxwellg9763 well, Usagi didn't remember his boring ass, either 😂 Here's a young, racecar driver with a MUCH better hair cut, more swag, more considerate, and a freaking motorcycle. Boyfriend, who? The real question is how is Michiru so okay with this.
Maybe she thought she was the only one of the group? Or she’s just surprised because Mako’s only talked about her male senpai, and mentioned nothing about attraction to girls.
0:36Michie Tomizawa, the voice actor for Rei Hino, later played the role of Sumire Kanzaki, the top star of the opera troupe, in a game called ``Sakura Wars.'' (火野レイの担当声優である富沢美智恵さんは後に「サクラ大戦」と言うゲームで神崎すみれ役として歌劇団のトップスター役を演じます。)
@Kefou Kefak First of all, that comment is from two years ago. Second, just because she had one love interest that was a boy does not automatically make her straight. She could easily be bi, for all you know.
I've only ever considered Sailor Moon though random meme posts on RU-vid, but for some reason I find these girls way cuter than the majority of the waifus being pushed out every season.
While watching this, I was thinking about the Italian dub, and of course they changed the dialogues entirely. They talk about the fact that Haruka invited her to drive her car and Usagi, Ami, Rei and Minako were worried about the fact that it could have been dangerous 😅😂
