One thing I do to battle depression is do self affirmations every morning before getting out of bed as soon as my mind starts up and tell myself how great I funking am..it trains your subconscious

I think you handled this really well. Having been in a roughly similar conversation though a word of warning. When you get through to someone like that the defensive thinking comes into play a little while later and some protective doubling down can result because the feeling is so uncomfortable and they embrace the friend who lies with open arms just to relieve the discomfort.

Dearest Wally, I want to thank you for your honesty, vulnerability, and ways to make me smile as I've decided at 39 that I no longer want to be a Jehovah's Witness. You were one of the 1st ex jw channels I viewed. As you well know, I went through a flurry of varying emotions as my eyes began to open. Being single, my family asking me to leave, during a pandemic & knowing that I would definitely be dead to everyone I loved left me disoriented. Wally your channel helped me feel I wasn't alone. Sounds like you did a great job and may well have planted those seeds with elder 1. It hurt to hear that you struggle to love yourself like we love you, and I'm so, so sorry for your pain. Watchtower raised us to be selfless to a fault. Add to that a culture of guilt, and salvation through humility and you've got yourself a perfect depression storm. I used to consciously think "well I'm worthless but at least I give every scrap of my energy to helping others". Be careful of letting that be your identity. I know it is not my place to say this but I was exactly where you are now and just feel compelled to share what I learnt. If nothing else (and I do know how hard this is) when you talk to yourself in your head, imagine you are talking to your niece or nephew, and correct yourself accordingly. Be verbally kind to yourself, even if you don't mean it. The rest will follow. I'm sorry I know this is completely innapropriate for a RU-vid comment. You absolutely do help people. And you will be able to help them even more when you learn to put yourself first. I promise. Sending love.

I read a book that really help with the pain of my mother leaving me when I was 3 yrs old. It's worth taking a look at and I hope you do. It's "Your Erroneous Zones" by Wayne Dyer. You’re 100% correct that there CAN be good from talking to others, and saying they “just aren’t going to listen” doesn’t mean they never will. I know because I lived it. For 5 years my husband was PIMO, though I only knew the latter 3 years. During that time he said many things that made him feel like it was fruitless to talk about it. I often stopped him and said I didn’t want to hear something, that I couldn’t take it, that it was negative, that nothing would ever shake my faith - the more he said, the more I doubled down. But he didn’t push me, he just wanted to be able to express himself. Through his incredible patience and fortitude, I finally began to listen. It took years but I don’t think I’d have gotten there if he hadn’t consistently expressed his thoughts to me. My best friend who left a decade ago, who I reached out to after I woke up, said she was completely shocked (though happy) to hear I left. I was the type of JW that you’d think, She’ll never change, she’ll never hear me, there’s no point. And now I’m a die-hard atheist apostate lol. So I just wanted to agree with that part, if someone has the emotional strength to keep talking to a person who seems like they aren’t listening, THEY ARE. It’s a cult after all, it’s very hard to deprogram. Thank you for being so open with this video!

I had a similar path as you Wally. Just a long time ago. I did my research over many of the same biblical passages in my 20s, learned to quit asking questions and because I was married with kids took about 15 more years to finally walk away. I thought about meeting with the elders, but decided just to send a letter saying that I no longer considered myself one of Jehovah's witnesses nor did I believe in the bible, nor the god of the bible. One really wonderful elder reached out to me and lovingly and respectfully made sure I understood what that meant. I did. And he also told me I was a good father and person and wished me well. I have not met with any of my old friends ever again in the 25 years since then. I'm ok with that now and have an amazing life since I began living true to myself. I followed watchtower advice: Make sure of all things and hold fast to what is fine. I admire your strength, your humor and your perception. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Keep living your life as best you know how, and truthfully as you see it. Glad you didn't take as long as I did. Thank you.

Wally, I'm just seeing this in 2024. We've never met, I've watched many of your videos and I think you're hilarious. I love your goofiness and just being yourself. This is the most raw personal video I've seen of you and I have to tell you- I'm so proud of you! Most elders can't understand those of us who leave the organization because our conscience no longer allows us to take part in the lies. That one elder sounds like an amazing, honest, caring person. I hope he continues to have an open mind and wakes up!!

One of my biggest struggles is not understanding how elders who I KNOW are very intelligent and who I deeply respect aren't doubting. It makes me question my sanity.

Wally, I am with you. Growing up in the organization decimates our self esteem. I've been DF'D for 20 years, and my Dad treats me like I'm dead. It hurts beyond words. You are loved. You are important, and you are worth SO much more than you realize. I struggle with depression and anxiety as well, but my life is worth living outside of the cult.

People don't understand how traumatic being shunned is especially when your only following directions.

I had the same experience. I did just what they said- pray and study. Then, when I found through my studies and prayers that the doctrines are false, everyone acted like I had the problem.

Wally, I too am an ex witness. I also have a mother who is a malignant narcissist. I am going through the depression and the feeling like a piece of "shit" I know this was uploaded a year ago but I am sending you so much love. All your videos have touched me and helped me more than I can tell you.

I had same doubts. They told me to research. I did. They told me to pray. i did. Hours and hours. I tried, tried to believe. But you are right, Wally, you have to stand up for your moral obligation and for what is real truth. If you tell someone that something is true for long enough, they will believe it. 2+2 =5. Stuff just never added up. The mind blower was the whole Adam and Eve story. When I read that over and over again, I was like, what? That was over 12 years ago. I left the organization but never was DF'd or Disassociated myself. I just faded away like the fog on a midsummer morning. So watching your video sparked me to comment. To see that other people did the same thing as I did. To hear your story and watch it unfold. Keep being brave. Keep being you. Thank you for your video. My heart... your pain echos many of ours, but you said it so much more eloquently and empathically than most of us can manage. I too sincerely hope you gave at least one elder something to think about in terms of how just reading the Bible can awaken one to how incongruous the Truth and the Bible really are (which is also how I woke up as a child), and what that cognitive dissonance can do to a person's psyche when not allowed to voice such 'opinions'. Wally, I’ve only ran across your site a week ago and am obsessed with your passion for researching the truth, humility, and your bravery. I have been out of JW for 20 years…was a 5th generation JW from Germany, left JW knowing my best friends-my 7 siblings and parents would never welcome me or my sons or know my grandchildren. However I still suffer from the trauma of it and just recently joined a spiritual abuse recovery site…that eventually led me to your site . I cried with you. My sons left JW with me… as we could not live the JW lies or promote that lie to others. I’m 64 now, and am so proud of your courage and commitment to the real truth. I would love to connect with you on questions I still have. My sons are 40 and 35, I could use another one to bounce thoughts off of. Your intelligence is astounding. I am so glad I discovered your channnel just now. This video resonates with me so much! My mom has shunned me, her only daughter and youngest child, and it hurts so bad. She gave power of attorney to the elders when she had cancer, and that was the biggest slap to the face for my brothers and I. The only thing that comforts me are my own kids and knowing that I will never put them through what I and my brothers went through. Unfortunately, my brothers have formed addictions and it’s so sad to see it stems from the awful childhood we had. My mom has it out for me the most as I was the only one of her kids to get baptized. These videos help, so thank you.

Wally......you are soooo loved not just by all of us but by the true God of the Universe(not Jehovah). Please know that you are and always have been enough just by being you. You are helping so many people, please don't ever doubt your worth to those who don't see your value. I understand your pain. I am also being shunned by my mom, dad, brother, sister- in-law as well as many other relatives on my mother's and father's side. I have a neice and 3 nephews. I was the aunty who was there for 1 of my nephew's birth and even though I live in a different state from my brother, I would make the trip to see my neice and other nephews a few days after they were born as well as every chance I got over the years. I truly miss them dearly but not enough to EVER return to Jehovah's Witnesses because I know who they truly are representing. It is a tough journey to wellness but you will get through it, please be strong. We are all here to support you. ❤
