In this video I take you on my journey of growing alocasia polly plants from their bulbs. I had a lot of fun experimenting with this process to find out which methods worked best for me. Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much for making this video. My brother and sister-in-law gave me an alocasia polly for christmas last year and it is all but dead. I couldn't bring myself to throw it away as I hoped it would come back in the spring. And then I found your video. I ran downstairs and tipped out the pot on the kitchen floor - I almost cried when I saw the little bulbs in the soil. Even if the main plant is dead, hopefully it will live on in a baby plant. x

I had three main stems from the plant I got and two of them seemed like total goners, leaves were dying. It was hard to do but I honestly chopped the leaves off and just left them as stem nubs. Seemed scary but I think it helped them conserve energy for new growth and I see them sprouting some new leaves slowly but surely! Even if the stems fail, you can cut up the root tuber into smaller pieces and replant those! I watched some other youtube videos for that method which was helfpful!

@@sydneyedwards4127 Hi Sydney! My Zebrina is dying as well. How short did you cut the leaves/stem? I think I cutted them around 20cm or so. I'm too scared to cut the root tuber :P

I've been using the shallow puddle method over the last six months since I found your video and I've 100% success getting the corms to sprout! Some take more time than others, but they have all put out leaves. Thank you so much for your wonderful advice.

I’m soooooooo glad I saw this video. I repoted my plant a month ago and found 5 “bulbs”, planted them all in moss. And you guessed it, they were all upside down, but still sprouting! Replanted them the right way up, now waiting for the new shoots to push through the moss. 😊😊😊😊😊

Thank you, such a clear video! I initially tried growing them in soil, nothing happened. A month later, I decided to do the shallow puddle method, and it's working! I placed the container in a transparent take away container, almost full sun, they're loving it!

Awwww. So happy I bumped into you. I repotted my Alocasia giraffe today and to my great surprise I found a lot of bulbs. Some were detached from the roots and some were hanging on for dear life. I had no clue how to grow them since it was my first time to see such. Thanks again, I can't wait for my babies to grow. :)

I placed two bulbs in soil and watered them regularly, but nothing happened for months...until last week, I checked and I saw two tiny leaves poking out. I hope they continue to grow because I had completely given up on them and now I'm invested.

I treat the croms like I would treat an avocado seed, pretty much the same methods work for both, I have also grow a avocado seed many times just in soil, place in soil, leave the top unburied and showing and water often, I'm guessing if you scrape off the outer shell and left the top of the croms above soil and allowing light to reach them, they would spout much faster

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! I followed your leca prop, and it was under grow light 12 hours a day and I’ve already seen new roots in less than a week!! It was in soil for 2 months before and I barely see any new roots, let alone the new growth. Follow her advice guys, it works!

As soon as I searched alocasia Polly corm, this popped up and I knew you would have some great info for me as always. I have my corms I found today in the shallow puddle method until my leca arrives tomorrow. I think I will keep some in the shallow puddle to see the difference in my conditions here. Thanks so much!

Awesome video! These are my favorite plants, and I love how many bulbs we can get from them to experiment on. I've actually had a 100% success rate planting them in Pon and simply watering them everyday. It drains so well, so it's a nice environment. But it does take longer than the water or Leca method. I do think any method that has partial submersion in water and more exposure to sunlight (i.e. not buried in substrate) makes it work so much faster which is why the Leca method you use is probably the best.

After watching your video I tried the “shallow puddle” method but I added a sheet of paper towel to the bottom of the Tupperware. They are doing great but they don’t have signs of a leaf, roots are there though! Fingers crossed

ooh I've also heard that works well too! I find patience is key with these... sometimes they take a while to sprout a leaf but if they've got roots you're probably looking at success!

I did the shallow puddle and it worked very well! I in the same water I added a Pothos cuttiing for propagation since I read somewhere that they produce growth hormones and all bulbs are growing ♡♡♡

Thank you. Great information. I had an alocasia that I bought over the winter but then it started losing it's leaves when I put it outside in the early spring. Now summer started, I decided to dump the pot if the bulb was still good. It had those little pebbles and the original bulb was still hard. So I stuck it back in the dirt. Now will have to repot after watching your video and try to root them in water. Thanks again.

They could defo grow in soil, but I find it much harder to get them to start that way! If it’s not too much work give water a go 😊 good luck!

So glad that I could help! I'm not too sure about anthuriums, I've only just gotten one. But I've seen people collecting anthurium pollen so its possible you may need to pollinate them in order to get seeds or seedlings?? Best of luck :)

OMG yay!! So glad the shallow puddle method worked well for you! I moved mine to leca after it rooted but before it sprouted too much as I didn't want the sprouts to grow sideways

I have had an Alocasia Polly for a few months, was giving it the water, light, drainage, etc that I needed but it wasn’t doing a dang thing. Lost a few leaves. Then I saw a video the other day that mentioned theirs was being strangled by garden mesh. Little did I know, so was mine! And during this process of removing the mesh, I got 13 bulbs! One already has its own roots. Gotta figure out what to do with them now! Very informative video, thank you

This just happened to me too! I’ve had mine for almost 1.5 years and only just discovered the mesh trapping it today and a bonus 8 corms. I hope it can finally push out some new growth now!

I got some recently and I kinda had no idea what I was doing. A couple sprouted and then I let it dry too much then Watered which basically over watered it. So I'm trying again and thank you this I'm sure will help. Thank you thank you thank you.

This was super helpful!! Planted 5 corms and accidentally upside-down (couldn't find any info on what direction to plant them, thank you!!). All planted in cactus/succulent super well draining soil under a plastic cover and 24hr plant light. Four are rooting and three have leave stems coming up but wonky since I planted them upside-down, but turned them a bit so hopefully they won't be too odd. So excited for more plants!!

FYI if you scrape the brown outer skin off the bulb with your fingernail, they will sprout faster. Leca works very well for sprouting.

Amazing video!! I used your advice and have grown 5 leaves from bulbs yay! I’m wondering how you maintained the plants in leca after they sprouted? Did you keep the bulbs half submerged in water? I noticed one of my leaf tips turned mushy and hopefully I can figure out why☺️

Ahh that's amazing!! once they started to grow leaves I lowered the water level so it filled like 1/3 of the container instead of 2/3

Given the Brazilian origins of these plants, and the tropical weather, with possibly very heavy rainy seasons, the plants may well be accustomed to growing in shallow puddles in the wild. Very interesting, and thank you in behalf of the four bulbs I found.

Alocasias are not from Brazil, they are from South East Asia. And no, they don't grow in shallow puddle but moist mulch under the canopy.

Actually the Alocasia amazonica(Polly) is not from any jungle, it is a hybrid “created” by a nurseryman in the 1950’s in Miami. It was given the name amazonica because that was the name of the plant nursery!

I just got my first alocasia polly the other day and I repotted and got some bulbs. I put them in soil and now I'm thinking maybe tomorrow I'll dig them up and try the shallow puddle method! I'll update if it works 👍 thank you!

Ooh exciting! They may well sprout in soil, it just depends on the conditions. But I defo prefer shallow puddle or wet pon or something as they moisture really gets the bulb going! Good luck!

you could put them on a heat mat. Just keep an eye on the water level as the heat will make it evaporate faster

Hey! This vid helped me out a bunch. I found some bulbs and I’m gonna try the shallow puddle method. A few questions: Is just enough water to keep them wet good? And the lid stays on top right? Do I ever need to take the lid off? Should I keep it on a sunny windowsill or a dark environment like a cabinet?

Ah how exciting! I did like 3-5mm of water so like 1/2 the bulb was covered and kept the lid on most of the time. Every few days I'd take the lid off for a couple of hours to let it get fresh air and I'd change the water if it was getting a bit gross. As for light, doesn't matter too much in the beginning before leaves. I kept mine in a low light part of my shelves but it wasn't like full black cabinet. good luck!

No problem! So glad it's helped! I wouldn't cover the top no. As for topping off the water, you can every once in a while to keep the very bottom submerged

Hi I’ve used shallow puddle method and your video helped me so much! Now my alocasia regal shield has white roots and a small leaf do I need to wait till it grows more leaves or can I transfer it already? can do a video of how to transfer it to Leca or soil please? I don’t want to kill it by doing wrong method ! And THANK YOU for this video. When I first found the bulb I put it directly in the soil and saw no results and that’s when I found your video it helped me sooo much and I’m so happy that my bulb has a small new leaf . Keep doing more videos .

that's so exciting!!! regal shield babies are some of the most beautiful imo! I'd say it's defo time to transfer to leca or soil at this point, just be sure to keep it hydrated for the first few days and you should be fine! you got this!

My zebrina died this christmas, it was my first plant and i was sosososo sad. I just looked through the soil and omg i found 8!!!! The two main ones that died was hard too, going to see if its going to grow - thank you so much

Stratum! Never had a failed corm (bulb) in barely damp stratum with a humidity dome and warming mat. I’m sure I will one day but so far it’s been easy.

I had tried all the methods, leca, grit, appropriate soil, and the best and most consistent has been bulbs in a very shallow puddle in some sealed tupperware on a heat mat with my other bulbs. They always grow.

I just planted maharani baby corms in bottle caps with a bit of water to get them going , I can’t wait to try my stingray . I just purchased a pink variegated black velvet alocacia corm for 10$ I hope it grows but it’s coming from another country and free shipping let’s pray 🙏🏼 this works . I just saw the plant and it’s beautiful- black with pink variegation . I’m no quitter if this one doesn’t work out tfs ❤

My alocasia got pests from a Monstera I brought in and before I noticed the spread, they already went in between the leaves and every new leaf had damage before sprouting D: I just made the big chop and cut the tops from the rhizomes, hoping they will sprout new leaves again from the part that was formerly in the soil, but like this, I might get even more plants than I had before (I have four rhizomes and found 25 bulbs of which half already have light swollen sprouting tips)

Ugh im so sorry pests are the worst! If it gives any hope, I gave my big alocasia plant the chop like how you described and it popped out new growth again eventually! Amazing you found so many bulbs! Hopefully you can get loads to sprout! 🤞

I watched your video about a month ago and dug out 10 corms from my Alocasia Polly! I put all 10 in a shallow container with lid, but also ordered leca and when it came in put 4 in leca. ALL are growing. and honestly at least 6 started right away. Now the 6 I have in shallow water (puddle is the best word for it haha) the roots are kind of looking spidery I think I need to plant it. What do you recommend? I plan to leave the 4 others in Leca for now but wondering if I should plant the others in the soil now. At least 4 of them I believe need to be moved to something more now. (P.S. I didn't even know these plants came from bulbs..... I learn so much on youtube haha!

Ah that is so exciting! I'm glad you've had so much success! You can defo transfer to soil once they've got roots. Just be sure to keep the soil fairly moist for the beginning. It would also be good to keep it in a warm humid place to encourage growth

i recently made this also! I had my alocasia bulbs on soil for a long time and nothing happened, but as soon as i made a "germinator" they started to sprout. I made it out of a disposable plastic container (like those you buy takeaway food in) with a lid, for moisture i put paper towels on the bottom and on the top, and then added water. I kept it closed most of the time and opened it to take a look of how were the babies doing. A few days later i had roots coming out and 2 or 3 weeks later i had to put them in soil because they were getting attached to the paper. Maybe this will work for you also in another opportunity!!

Thanks for the informative video. I’m giving the leca abd puddle water a go 🤞 however, can you pls tell me if you put them in the dark or just ‘normal’ indoor light environment or even use grow lights? I’m assuming just the normal indoor light

Ooh yay very exciting! I kept mine in just normal light, nothing special. I suppose they could probably do alright in the dark even until the leaves start sprouting... but I'm not too sure

Hey Emma! Thank you for this video! So I found a baby tuber today in my pot. I’m from India so the weather here isn’t too cold for the winter, do you recommend saving the bulbs for springtime or planting it as it is? And if yes, how do I store it?

If the weather is still pretty warm you could probably go ahead and try to get it to sprout! If you wanted to store it, I'd say keep it in your plant's soil. You may be able to store it in a dark dry place like caladiums but I'm not too sure so it may be worth doing some research! Good luck

I found some bulbs when replanted my Polly last autumn. Put in sphagnum moss mini greenhouse (it's just some plant based plastic container with lid 😅) and they didn't sprout just until now.. maybe it's because of winter, but I hope they will continue to grow and make some roots too. :)

I think not fully burying the bulbs in soil makes a difference too. Only bury bottom half. Keep moist. Uncovered 💚 I’m gonna try your lecca method too!!

Emma, this was so informative. I tried the perlite method and failed miserably. Going to do LECA from now on. Did you cover the LECA jar? And did you change out water? Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm currently trying out this method and started with the 'shallow puddle' method and both of them gave me a bulb with root growth so far (+- 3 weeks) I did change the water today in the shallow puddle and leca. It gives you some insight on how far the roots are growing and sprouting and particularly with the shallow puddle there was some fungal growth and rotting on some of them so i took those out and refreshed the water. I think refreshing the water will shock the plant once it's rooted to the leca but I think if the roots are just sprouting its okay to strain and refresh. I'm not an expert tho haha just speaking from current experience

@@mayissalty6279 Yeah changing the water every once in a while is important. Especially, like you said, if it has some funky stuff growing on it. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be too much of a shock as long as the new water is also room temperature. Glad you've had so much success!

Its coming to the winter months and I was wondering if I was meant to harvest my alocasia tubers now? I didn't want to just yet as my alocasia is pushing out another large leaf and didn't want to stop it from doing so... but after should i just uproot it for the tubers to make more? or will the tubers grow in the soil? so should i just leave them?

As the weather is turning I would suggest you not repot at this time of year to harvest your tubers. The ideal time is spring so it may be best to wait until then :) the tubers may grow in the soil or they may just sit dormant until you harvest and try to grow them

Awesome! Yeah you can totally use the leca method to help it grow more roots or leave it in leca permanently as long as you're keeping track of pH and fertiliser.
