Spider mites liked this plant more than I did. I eventually gave up on the battle and discarded the plant. I had the opportunity to purchase this plant recently on clearance. I thought about it and decided to leave it for someone who may have better luck with it. I do like the plant and hopefully will be brave enough to give it another try in the future. Enjoy yours!

Well Nita, that plant became a nightmare. It had spider mites constantly and I got tired of it. After treating it several times, I ended up throwing it out. It always came back after cutting it back, but sure enough the spider mites came back with the new growth. Never again with this plant!

Thank you for the wonderful information. I don't repot but now after watching this video I am re-thinking this as I too live in hot humid south Florida and this contributes to rot. We have the advantage of putting them outside to dry as I also do this when I bring in a new plant. Putting them outside (in the shade you know our sun!) helps also. Love your channel!
@PeggysPlants

So happy to hear from a fellow South Floridian! Yes, I do know our sun. I can be brutal on our plants. It is nice to be able to keep plants outside year round, however. When a plant doesn't act right, I put it out...and it's usually quite happy to be there.

Thanks! I have had the same rotting issue with my Tiny Dancer and wanted to see how to harvest the babies that had sprouted off the rhizome. I thought maybe I had overwatered the original plant and that's what caused the rot.

For some reason it seems to be a thing with these plants. I've heard from other people who have had the same issue. I tend to be an underwater, so I'm pretty sure mine wasn't overwatered. Good luck saving yours!

It's a beautiful plant - hope it survives. I like to unpot and check the roots right away and have found quite a few surprises. Ordinarily, I repot within a few days and give all new plants get a dose of systemic.

I do the same. I have a pump sprayer that's always full of a systemic drench and ready to go. I always treat new plants as soon as I bring them on my porch. I don't know what was going on with this plant.

Peggy, good call doing what you did! At LOWES there is a product by evergreen called soil conditioner here. Its basically ground pine fines. Its great for drainage and creating a loose airy soil. I will usually mix JUNGLE GROWTH or FOX FARM OCEAN FOREST with coarse sand and soil conditioner. This usually creates a loose airy mix for plants that prefer a fast draining airy soil. I think the tiny dancers you saved will do just fine :)

For me, it depends, if I repot it or not. I’ve noticed things lately in home stores, things are in a heavy peat mix which I don’t like, however I’ve left my Maculata in that soil an just keeping close eye on the water. I know if it’s in that peaty soil, it will rot in a heartbeat. I’m glad you had plants plants left, Tiny Dancer is a gorgeous plant, I’m sure they will recover well in your care. 😀

I so love this plant. I purchased one last year and it didn't make it. I purchased another one and it arrived on Saturday. I think bugs got to the first one (black little plant mites - so annoying) and I didn't give it enough light. The plant grew leaves but they got smaller and smaller (less than an inch big) and finally it just fell apart. I found the rhizome with some roots on it and I didn't throw it away. It is very very small and I am going to see if it will come back. The worst that will happen is it is no longer useful. Thank you for the video. It has inspired me big time. Hope you do a follow up video.

It depends on the plant for me. I usually let my plant acclimate to my house for a week or so when I bring them home from the nursery. If they look a little rough, I repot them. If the soil looks a bit funky, I repot them. If it looks happy and healthy, I put it in a cachepot until it outgrows the nursery pot. I do that a lot with Peperomia because they are finicky. Good luck with the Tiny Dancer. I am interested in what happens with the rhizome.

I just bought a Tiny Dancer last week from our nursery in Cincinnati. I was told it was a shade plant and had it in my family room away from a window. I notice the tips of several leaves were turning brown. Also the leaves look a little powdery, could that be a mold?
