Aloo paratha is one our favourite dishes from Calcutta, found in so many of the Punjabi dhabas, where they are served with lots of love and butter alongside achar and dahi (creamy yoghurt). Aloo paratha is a type of stuffed Indian flatbread, that is quick and easy to make, and is very filling. When made at home the calories in a paratha can be kept under 400 kcal (our recipe has 385 kcal) which is very reasonable for a full-sized lunch or dinner. Aloo paratha, or as a Bengali would call it, alu porota, is also an excellent recipe for tiffin or lunchbox for kids, or adults, or for carrying during travel. Aloo paratha, being very dry, keeps well for a long time, and for this reason it is an integral part of the menu during Indian train journeys, where a whole family can be seen devouring stacks of paratha with achar. Parathas or parottas form a very important part of the cuisine of South Asia, including Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.
