Had a buddy who interviewed for a defense job. One of the questions they asked were, "Have you ever downloaded illegal software or music". This was the late '90s and he was fresh out of engineering college; the answer was obviously yes and he responded as such. The interviewer said, "Good. We don't care what you've done, we just need people who are honest about it... moving forward, we would prefer if you didn't do that though".

I both love it, and get a bit scared when they don't figure out that this 40-something white dude they're talking to is trans. On one hand, I'm playing them like a piano. On the other hand, if they figure out my little secret, they might kill me because of their own insecurity.

As a white dude in his 30s, I get it all the time too, and I’m still young. Older than most of my coworkers, but young nonetheless. What I tend to do is steer them away from those conversations until we’ve built up a solid rapport and they’ve grown to trust/look up to me, at which point I pivot and, when they bring up those talking points, I start to deconstruct them and demonstrate how they’re wrong and harmful both to others and to themselves. It doesn’t always work, hell, I’d estimate it only works about 30% of the time, but I’ve managed to walk two of my coworkers at my current job away from those kinds of ideas, and gotten them started on the path to progressive social ideology and leftist economics. One of my coworkers in particular used to talk about how much he loved capitalism, and I never contradicted him, never said the dreaded word “socialism”, just talked about how much better our working conditions would be if WE had some say in how the company is run, and how, even though our boss likes to rant about how we’re all replaceable and he has 1000 resumes, if the whole staff walked out tomorrow they’d have to shut the place down where if the boss died tomorrow it could just keep trucking on like nothing happened, and that was a real eye-opener for him. I’ve turned him onto a few other radical thinkers(Proudhon, Kropotkin, William Godwin, and Emma Goldman. I’ve found it’s a lot easier to introduce people to anarchist thought compared to communist or socialist thought, because there aren’t as many negative associations with the words “communism” and “socialism” in the West). One person at a time, that’s how we win the revolution.

Well at least to *a* r/con sub. In my experience it's a coin flip if he ends up on r/conservative or r/conspiracy.

Back in elementary school our teacher organized a day where nobody was allowed to use any pronouns. And not in a cursed way, the words I and you were banned. Everything and everyone had to be referred to in the third person. It was a great day, everyone had a blast. Couldn't do that now, though. Parents would demand EVERY day be no pronouns day.

My favourite is how Japanese most-strongly genders first-person pronouns (there's sooo many ways to say "I"!) While second- and third-person pronouns aren't entirely gender free in Japanese, most are neutral and the more-gendered ones are gendered moreso by context or by association rather than being inherent in the same way as first-person ones are.

Reminds me of how the "common sense minister" in our last UK government legitimately tried to ban rainbow lanyards. Thankfully that's been reversed. (Though their anti-trans policies have not been.)

I think I know what you mean, but I disagree. Because "based" has no meaning without the context of the user's political & ethical values. People on the extremes of the political spectrum, & everyone in between, use it. Depending on who is calling what based, it can be totally opposite things. I've definitely heard people, esp on the right, use "based" in a way that is fully consistent with the idea of "alpha males." Based is only a little less ambiguous than "good." Both (& similar) words are crappy ways to say you approve or agree. If you don't know someone's values, & all you have is a vague quote lacking context, with them saying someone or something is based, there's no way to know besides doing further research. Which I'd call a word being useless. Except it's worse than useless, because many will read a quote like that, & just project their idea of based onto it. Absolute ambiguity without a knowledge of a person's values & beliefs? Word fail.

I think your statement stems from a misunderstanding of what being an "alpha" means. Going by chimpanzee research, the alphas are those that show other chimps consistent attention, grooming, and even compassion. The others may follow an alpha because of those traits. It has nothing to do with the physical prowess the right attributes to it.

Pronoun -> Professional Nouns, like sports teams. Nouns are a person, place, thing, or idea. Don't worry. It's not a good joke, just a very specific one.
