Today’s feature in the late 80s early 90s had one of the smoothest games as an ammeter, that you just knew would translate well to the NBA. His fundamentals were way past his class, in the little things he did that changed potential turnovers to sweet, lengthly tear drops in the lane as he long stride back on defense, emotions never too high or too low. He was a star in high school, but even better in college at La Salle University, never averaging less than 20ppg in his 4 seasons, leaving the school top 3 on the NCAA all-time scoring list, now 5th all time recently passed by Campbell’s Chris Clemons in 2015, and Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis in 2018. His 3,217 points is 1 of only 11 players to ever score at least 3000 points in NCAA men’s basketball history. He became a top 10 pick in the 1990 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings, and in his first few seasons, looked like an annual all star selection, especially in just his rookie year, which in the end became his best season as a pro, being named first team all rookie. Simmons did put up solid numbers on paper for the next 3 years in stats usually focused on, like a 17ppg scoring average in the first 4 years, 8 rebounds 4 assist and 1 and a half steals a game, starting just about every game he played. He was promising individually in that span of his career, but then things all changed for the worst. It’s like Lionel Simmons suddenly fell off a cliff. Shocked to see Simmons game after 93-94. With a little more athleticism or a better jump shot, I really think he could've been special.

As a kings fan and being old enough to remember this. Yeah he would straight up disappear in games. Him and mitch should've been a great tandem but it was like " ok this is mitchs team" and he'd vanish. And it was done once the wizard came on the team. Thanks for the hard work. Any chance of doing a Glen Rice video? He's the definition of stunted growth.

He had such fluid moves, but he couldn't jump and his jump shot was mediocre at best. He was so smooth attacking the basket however soft enough in an area that the game so hard and physical. So yes, he was in some ways unlucky.

Simmons wasnt a bust. Runner up in RoY voting. Averaged 17ppg 8rpg and 4apg in his first 4 seasons. Played excellent defense, great team player, versatile considering he was like a 6-5 power forward (yes, I know he's listed at 6-7) coming out of college. I agree his career fell off after 94 but considering that he was effectively playing on 1 leg for those last 1 and a 1/2 seasons he was a soldier. Doesn't get his due but in his day I would say he would have been a valuable jack-of-all-trades kind of players that every contender needs. I would take prime Simmons over guys like prime Sean Elliott any day.

@elwin38

Roy Tarpley had serious game when he played for Michigan and his early years with the Mavericks. In the 1988 West finals, he was giving Kareem, Magic and the Lakers fits(the Lakers finally won in 7 games). But his game really fell apart after that. It started with the alcohol then drugs and then he was out of the league.

In the pre season vs the Lakers in Maui. Lionell Simmons messed his knee up bad. Needing arthroscopic surgery he came back too fast. The knee was constantly sore. He lost alot of his mobility. That's why he lost his sf spot . It was due to his knee injury. You would think someone making a video about someone would include the facts. Maybe do some research on what happened to him. He was a promising all around player. Who once scored 40 + in Barkley. He could pass , rebound, score in the lane. The only flaw was his low fg %. Lionell Simmons is my favorite King of all time. Give the L-Train some credit . Only injuries stoped him of a 10+ year NBA career

I was gonna say that if you injure your hands playing Game Boy, with that Pre-Tayshaun Prince body and length, change your game into a defender. However, he had a Tayshaun body (alright, 2 inches shorter), but was nowhere near as athletically skilled as a Tayshaun. With all that said, 3,000 points in college......is 3,000 points in college! Dude's a goat, in Philly!
