Karen had one of the most beautiful voices in music. We lost her far to young and you could see it in this video. She was so thin and so sick. Saddens me to even see her in this video. But the song is gorgeous. RIP Karen.

Watching her sing this great song was painful for me. She was sooo very gifted and had such a wonderful voice. Her inability to be able to overcome her anorexia and succumb to this horrible illness was a loss to the entire world. May she be singing with the angelic chorus in joy now...

She was so weak and frail when this was recorded, she was an absolute trooper in her fight for life with a condition that was really just coming to light with reasoning and how to deal with it. God rested this beautiful woman's soul and left us a splendid catalogue of special one of kind music and unmatched purity and sincerity of loving vocals from her and her brother. So - so glad you reacted to this romantic ballad, this was their last hit song. She went on to sing in GOD's Heavenly Choir +++ with this beautiful gift that God gave her to share with us for her time here with us all. P.s. - Jay and Amber - one of your Fav's on the country side re-mastered a version of this song in 1986 - ( that's right - Alabama ). It's also very good and worth a listen. We love you two here from Ohio...

So sad when I see Karen at this point in her life .She was a beautiful lady with a beautiful voice. I stumbled across a channel on RU-vid last week of a young lady going through the exact same illness ,but she is even thinner than Karen was . The lady's channel is called Eugenia Cooney. She doesn't think she has an ED problem

I need to commend Amber on the respectful way she referred to the latter days of Karen's career. She and Jay never show anything but complete respect for all artists, but Amber deserves even more credit for acknowledging, in a sensitive and non-triggering way, that this song and video were towards the end of Karen's life. The fact that Amber references this time as "how *WE* lost Karen" says a lot. Amber was born long after Karen passed, but the emotional connection is clear. Mr and Mrs Robinson, you're both beautiful and classy people. With love from an old UK queen.

Sadly Karen had Anorexia before that word really existed, it was so horribly misunderstood at that time and no proven treatments existed. It was only after her tragic passing that attention of the disease was created and so many people can now survive, thanks to her. Her music is timeless and the sad gift she left behind with her early death has proven to be just as influential. ✌️

I was in my early 20's when she passed away. I clearly remember when I heard of this....I was at a local fair, and it was announced over the PA system that Karen had just died. There was a collective gasp ... then silence as everyone took that in.

Eve, I can't believe That you could mean what you just said Think of what you are How very far you are from being real Look into the mirror Nothing there to see Eve, I can't believe You'd really leave him Notice how her image saddens How lonely she's become Just once I'd like to see her happy Before the winter comes... That's part of the lyric from the 1969 Carpenter/Bettis song Eve, which appeared on Carpenters' debut album. It's not about Karen; it was inspired by a Twilight Zone type TV show. But man, it couldn't be much more prophetic, could it...

This is "TV live", so lipsynched. That was how this stuff was done then. There are, though, numerous pure live Carpenters recordings as well, and they were tremendous live. Interestingly, the "TV live" thing became an issue when the famous standards medley between Karen and Ella Fitzgerald was taped for the 1980 Carpenters TV special Music, Music, Music. For Karen, "TV live" was normal. For Ella, though, who was a generation earlier, it was anathema! So the segment was taped with Karen lipsynching and Ella adding her part live. And you cannot tell...

Well of course Karen's last lead vocal (Now) dates to April 1982; she died ten months later. But there were more Carpenters releases through that decade and even beyond: Voice Of The Heart (1983) An Old Fashioned Christmas (1984) Time (Richard solo, 1987) Lovelines (1989) Into the 90s and beyond there were a couple instrumental CDs by Richard and several compilations that included revisions of studio outtakes and recordings for TV, most notably As Time Goes By which includes the wonderful TV standards medley by Karen and Ella Fitzgerald. And in 1996, Karen's 1979-80 solo album was finally released as well...

I saw Karen sing and drum in 1972 .What do I think is the very best of Karen singing? A Place to Hideaway -its lyrics speak to me because of the depression I have had most of my life .Watching Karen sing and drum thru Dancing in the Streets and a cover of the Beatles Help(check the version in Japan at the Boudokan) is always a joy .But for singing pyrotechnics ? It is hard to beat Trying To Get The Feeling Again.Recorded in 1975,it was lost .Richard found it and it was released in 1994.19 years after it was recorded and 11 years after Karen died .Masterfully produced by Richard .It has a Wall of Sound much like Phil Spector's The Righteous Brothers You've lost that loving feeling. It starts off slow and builds and builds.Other songs ? Solitaire ,Yesterday Once More, then there are the duets with Ella Fitzgerald,John Denver and Perry Como --all on you tube

Their cover of "Please Mr. Postman" by The Marvelettes might be their most upbeat hit. I'm curious to see what others say. 😊 P.S. I just remembered "Beachwood 4-5789" (an old school way of saying a phone number) and "Want You Back in My Life Again" were on the same album as this song you're reacting to today. According to Wikipedia, this song was originally written in 1979 by a session group called "Bama". This version barely cracked the Pop and Adult Contemporary charts. The Carpenters released the song in 1981. It was the group's final Top 40 Pop hit peaking at #16. It was the group's final #1 Adult Contemporary hit where it finished at #15 on the year-end Adult Contemporary chart. Karen died in 1983. In 1984, Mickey Gilley and Charly McClain recorded the song for a duet album. In 1986, Alabama recorded the song, and it became the group's 20th straight #1 country hit. The Alabama version is excellent. If you like the Carpenter's version, you can check out the Alabama version.

Her body was in terrible shape, but her voice never lost that beauty and clarity. This song played in a lot of juke boxes back in the early 80's and I played it constantly, LOL. Someday, I wish you would react to the English singer, Harriet. She sounds a lot like Karen, yet has her own sound too. Try Harriet-Home(Michael Buble cover) or her version of Goodbye To Love(piano sessions). Another beautiful voice and a lovely person as well. She loves everything 70's and was raised on Carpenters music, yet she writes her own music too.

It took us SO long to recognize eating disorders. I had a friend in junior high, around 1970, that had bulimia. Karen died over 10 years later. WHY did it take so long to admit there were eating disorders?

You can't go wrong with The Carpenters, nice song. I can see The BeeGees singing this too. I still highly suggest the biopic film The Karen Carpenter Story, you'll really like it.

Their last modest hit, she was gone a couple of months later. Too thin here in this video, but still had the voice of an angel.

Need to do Blue Man Group featuring Venus Hum doing “I Feel Love” for one of your female Fridays. Great singing and absolutely phenomenal performance on stage.

Such a sweet and beautiful voice. It makes me sad how she suffered. RIP Karen.

While you can never go wrong with Carpenters, please consider adding Jewel singing "Foolish Games" for a future Female Friday feature!!

Or Sarah Vaughan. How can a music reaction channel going on three years, which claims to be electric, have zero reactions to Sarah Vaughan. Plenty of her male contemporaries. But none of Ms. Vaughan. I know for a fact I'm not the only person requesting.

This was their last hit in the summer of 1981 just a year and a half before she died on February 4, 1983. I can still recall when I heard of her passing on the radio.

Guys this was Karen's last hit single reached number 15 in 1981 it's very sad about how she felt about herself the first person to bring national attention to this disorder sadly the voice of an angel left us on February 4, 1983 in Downey Ca. at the age of 32 RIP KAREN 😢🌺

One of my favorite of all their many hits. I also think of Those Good Old Dreams which one also one of their last and biggest hits and gives you an over all carefree feeling.

The B side of this single is called "Because We Are in Love." It was actually used by Karen as her own wedding song. A very sad and painful marriage for Karen which only came just months before her tragic death.

Their last top 20 hit! They were fully embracing the 80s with this one -- moving in a new direction. I'm sure they would have had more hits if not for Karen's tragic demise. Would have loved to see them embrace a bit more rock and roll along with the ballads. The most well-known upbeat Carpenters tune was 'Please, Mr. Postman' -- a cover of the Marvelette's version from 1975. It is their biggest international hit.
