I thought the same thing. This song isn’t a Carpenter’s song I listen to often, that one would be Superstar, but I had seen it on a list of their best songs not long ago, and that line really got to me.
I will say it every time...Karen Carpenter had the absolutely best voice and talent of her generation. I can not think of another female voice today that even comes close.
Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt, Ella Fitzgerald, Kate Bush, Olivia Newton-John, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, Judy Garland, Edith Piaf…. Just to name a few.
Don't forget Richard deserves respect. He was very involved in the arrangement and production and his background vocals were always so perfect and just the right amount to blend so beautifully with Karen.

“Only Yesterday” is one of my favorite Carpenters songs. It always reminded me of “Just The Way You Are” by Billy Joel. I believe Phil Ramone who produced Joel was an engineer on this album which likely explains the Joel connection.
Ha! I was thinking this must be one of the few songs of theirs I never heard. This is one of my favorite albums from them. I didn't get it until several years after it was released, but it may actually be my favorite.
In 1979-80 Karen recorded a solo album with Ramone, using Billy Joel's entire band. Not released at the time, it finally appeared as a kind of memorial release in 1996.

Happy Birthday Amber!!! I am glad you reacted to this song by the famous brother/sister duo. this video was filmed at Huntington Gardens in Pasadena, California. It has been noted this is a two part song. the beginning is the sad and long for a companion in the singer's life. then the second part it where it is found and the singer is now being optimistic that things will "be alright". I am a hard core Carpenters' fan and this is my favorite song of theirs. It really is a tough decision to make because just about all them are dope!! This one, in particular, has a special message we all can relate when longing for a partner/spouse in life. This song taken from the sixth studio album "Horizon". it has been noted the listener can hear some of the finest performances in Karen's vocals. Another song on that album called "Solitaire". A very very sad song where a man has "lost his love, Through his indifference" and wind up basically playing a game of Solitaire. A tear jerker if you will but oh so beautify sung by the late Karen Carpenter. keep the Carpenters' catalog coming......

I saw Karen sing in 1972 .In my opinion her best song is one that was released until long after her death .It was released by her brother .The song is Trying To Get The Feeling Again ---and it is Karen at her very best.
