Always Read the Fine Print on Turo!

If used properly the platform can be beneficial for both customer and owner, however the standardization of the app doesn't always line up with the final terms. The fact that you are dealing with an individual with specific terms vs a company, makes it a real buyers beware platform.
Most of the problems stem from the gypsy rental companies the platform enables. 1 person that buys and lists a bunch of high mileage junk cars with no employees to keep overhead low enough to make the platform profitable. They bang a bunch of people for damage on worthless cars and sell them off at auction when they are done. There are a list of changes I think Turo should make to protect themselves and the customers, but I don't work for them, so i'll just point out flaws in the platform as they affect me.

People. Need to be careful with turo. Make sure you check all the tires and do a good walk around take videos and pictures of everything. Alot of these safety things can be overlooked like tires and brakes when people rent cars for a quick buck and have little to lose.
@StasRyadinsky
@StasRyadinsky 5 лет назад
Yeah I agree. As a student with limited budget I needed to rent a car once and i used a service like this called EasyCarClub in the UK. I read the small print on most rental companies and everyone wanted to charge me much more for being under 25 (22 at the time of rental). Majority of the places wouldn't rent me at all. This company also doesn't charge you as much for the refundable deposit so it was a big plus for me. I paid £10 extra and i didnt have to worry about paying almost £600 in the event of a claim/accident. I think i was lucky that i found the owner who was very friendly and not fussy at all.

I rented for a year in Atlanta. It was fun. Keep in mind, Turo is like Grubhub. You order food from there but if you want a high quality burger, you can order a gourmet burger or McDonald’s. It’s all from Grubhub, or in our case Turo, but be careful who you rent from. When I rent from Atlanta airport I would deliver the car to the regular parking lot (hourly rate) and make sure not to let the car sit there more than 2 hours so the customer doesn’t pay more than $6 (I mentioned this in the SHORT description of vehicle) if the customer complained or rented the car for over a week I would reimburse the parking fee. Customer satisfaction is what’s most important. I took all the pictures necessary before hand so if the customer wanted to take additional pictures it’s all optional, not necessary since I covered all angles and photos are time stamped. I cleaned and vacuumed after every use. I had copies of latest dealership maintenance records and their 40 point inspection report in the glovebox. I provided a lockbox for convenience (Turo requires a picture/selfie of person holding license next to face and 1 photo of just license.) DONT ORDER THE CHEAPEST! Order the ones with the MOST positive reviews. Note, that some cars have little or no reviews. Check their profile, sometimes they have other vehicles with hundreds of 5 star reviews and they just happen to add a new vehicle.

He described the hassle in the video. You get to the airport, jump on a tram. Ride 10 minutes to the rental place. Rent the car which takes 10 minutes more walk across the lot. Then you get your car. In comparison what he thought he was getting: land at the airport. Walk out the terminal door. Take a photo of the odometer. Drive off. You skip 10 minutes of paperwork and skip having to go to the rental lot. Obviously that's not what happened here.

@TaylorMMontgomery

I think renting the average $55 sub-compact isn't what Turo is meant for. The reality is, the people that are renting the cheap cars are usually people, like you, who don't read the fine print. I would say most people that I know who use Turo usually use it to rent cars that you wouldn't be able to rent from the airport. To play equally here, it's 2019 and I think you're being obstinate toward the rental car companies. I rented cars on a weekly basis for my old job, and if you rent from National, you bypass the counter, essentially pick any car you want, and you never have to talk to a person except at the exit gate. And, National's selection is pretty awesome, although it does depend on the airport. I usually paid $70-80 a day with taxes, and to be able to rent a loaded Grand Cherokee or Mustang for the Elantra price is well worth doing a quick sign up for their rewards program. Also, I'm a Turo host. I rent out my F30 335i. I keep it at my house most of the time. but, I do offer two different airport services: one that's *actual* curbside pickup, where I meet the customer and then just take a Lyft home. I also offer what I call the 'unattended pickup' where I use a lockbox like this guy has. I keep a pre-paid parking card in the visor and you just swipe it to exit. Either way though, you're expecting way too much if you think you're going to have a smooth experience renting a Versa on Turo lol
@FrancoCastro

I have used turo in the past and in my experience it is very mixed. YES you do have to read everything, it is a common sense thing. You do rent turo for the price not the convenience. I rented once a big pickup truck to move a u-haul trailer ( that was the cheapest option for me ) and then some day I rented a 19usd car when I had to leave my car with the mechanic for a few days. When I went to Denver I was looking for an AWD, with rental cars they were asking 100usd a day for any 4x4 or awd car. In turo I got a nice SUV with AWD for 49 bucks a day.

I used turo in Southern California a few weeks ago for a one day rental on a C7 corvette. Wasn’t ran by a janky “rental company”, it was his actual car. Didn’t have a single issue with the process, the guy took care of all the pictures. Just showed up, got the keys and left. Same for the drop off process. I do agree with rob that you HAVE to book the car before having any sort of contact with the people. No way of asking any questions.

Turo is a horrible replacement for a rental car company if you’re on a time sensitive travel itinerary (i.e. business or schedule bound Vacation). Turo is good for test driving a car over a weekend if you’re considering a purchase/lease. Want to know how a Tesla Model 3 drives for more than just a short circuit; rent for a few days. That’s how I use it. Quickly realized that I prefer the Chevy Colorado over a Toyota Tacoma with respect to power, interior, & comfort - that’s Turo’s niche.

Mark met me and my girlfriend at the airport...curbside and did the check-in process for me as I got there and notified me of some prior damage to the front bumper. Gave me the keys and told me to just be careful not to curb the wheels....4 days later returned the car full of fuel and clean. paid for the additional toll fares and that was that a 5-star review for me. Its all on the host you rent from that determines the experience. This was in Ft Lauderdale at that. and rate was 68 per day.

I was thinking of putting my Stage 2 Roush on Toro - but it’s near mint with under 20k miles. I’m too afraid people will wreck it. The Stage 2 doesn’t add any power over the stock GT - but has full suspension. That said, people wreck stock GT’s and I can definitely get the rear end squirrelly without trying too hard. Being my hobby car, it sits most of the time. But that also means miles aren’t being added or mayhem isn’t lurking around every corner. Only car I’d feel comfortable putting on Toro is one I bought specifically to put on Toro - like a used C6 Vette with 80k miles and some wear. It would be insured in case someone wrecked it, and maintenance wouldn’t be horrible, and the rental rate wouldn’t be so cheap. It would be high enough to attract buyers who could afford it but cheap enough to be a bargain compared to other 400hp sports cars. Or I’d get a long bed pickup truck to rent out and just expect people to abuse the bed.

Drop off was at LAX and I had to find parking while already being late for my flight lol When I used real agencies I rent cars with 5-10K on the meter that look and drive brand new with pickup and drop off inside the airport. Only reason to use turo is if the agency literaly doesnt have the car you want. Wich is very rare.

I rented Turo 2 weeks ago. Overall great process, I got to drive a stick shift 2007 mustang. Turo is the only way to rent a stick shift. Now there was a big drawback. It was my first time and I did not know that I should take pictures after I dropped it off to prove that it was not damaged. Now it had some slight grooves in the bumper and they tried to pin it on me. Now I told them that they did not know the car was hit by someone else in the hours between when I returned it and the owner took the pictures. So I was intimately was not charged the 511$ for the damage (175$ of which was appraisal and processing fees). Now I paid 25$ a day for a mustang which is super good compared to rental car company. Now what this guy is dealing with is not what he is supposed to. You should never pay for parking and he could have easily filed a complaint (of condition of the car and parking) with Turo and getting a full refund. Also it was this guys fault for renting and old peice of crap car. It tells him the year of the car and he could see all the pictures before hand.

We recently gave Turo a whirl. Wish we didn't try to cut corners with the budget and quality of a rental car. Thought we were getting a good deal but at the end of the day, it cost us more (way more) than using a regular rental car company. We purchased the curbside delivery/pick-up, cleaning service, insurance as well as leaving it for Turo to fill up when we delivered it. This was the only down buzz of our entire trip. Had to find the car in a parking garage after a 10 hr flight and not knowing our way around. Had a slight accident whilst dropping off the car at the end of our journey, at the airport, trying to find the parking garage. Popped a tyre and scraped the tyre well. Maximum USD$100 to purchase a new tyre and the damage was nominal on the car. Owner assured us that it would be fine and probably covered by insurance anyway. Arrive back to NZ and a week later, we receive a huge bill for USD$2500+ and after one reply to them, contesting the invoice and asking for a receipt for repairs/estimates to have it done - they wrote back and said that "Due to lack of communication, they have forward our case to FEDCHEX and we must deal with them from now on..." During the time we had the car, the horn kept going off every time we tried to start the engine. The moral of the story: Don't cut corners on quality. It's not worth it.

Basic rental cars really don't make much sense with turo, like I flew into Atlanta on Monday and went to the national garage and got a 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4 for the week. It was washed, interior cleaned out and had a full tank of gas, for the same price on turo I could get a 2008 PT cruiser. When you get to the cars that are in the $60-100 a day range then you can find some good deals on interesting cars, but if you need the cheapest thing to get around when traveling probably best to stick to regular rental car companies in my opinion.

Hey Rob, I personally am a host on Turo, and I have to say I agree with you that in the case of cheaper "budget oriented" cars, I think it's pretty easy to get hosed on the price. However, I think that on somewhat higher end cars, it can definitely be cheaper. In my case, I rent out a 2015 Mustang convertible in San Diego, which is the only car I have listed on Turo (however I'm considering adding a second car based on my success so far with the mustang). I've actually done a cost comparison vs. the same car through Budget. This is all assuming no extra insurance is added when someone rents a car. As a 21yo, it would cost $490 ($390 for renters 25+) for a 4 day (mon-fri) trip via Budget, vs. $315 for the same amount of time with my car, which I always park as close to the terminal as possible, and will sometimes even do curbside dropoff as a "bonus". In San Diego you actually do have to take a shuttle to get to the rental car agencies. That's a $175 cost savings best case, and $75 worst case. Also to note, that's with airport delivery, which I charge an extra $95 for. If someone wanted to pick up the car at my house 30 min north of the airport, they could rent the car for $220 for that same period of time. Granted, my car is likely not as new as one from the rental agency, and it's also got a few dings and scratches on the bumpers and such, but it also comes at a significant cost savings vs the big brand rental companies, especially for "underage" renters. I suppose it all boils down to what those things are worth to the customer renting the car, so far, it hasn't slowed me down. I have to disagree on the whole "fine print" thing. I could clearly see in your video that all of the information about picking up the car was right there in the car's description, hardly "fine print" IMO. I personally think that there is at least a little bit of responsibility on the renter to at least read the one or two paragraphs explaining the circumstances on how to pick up/drop off the car, what the features of the car are, etc. It is meant to be a different experience than traditional car rentals is it not? In my case, I always try to communicate everything as much as possible with any guests that I have, and make sure that they understand how the process works. I also do my own pre and post trip inspections on every trip to make sure the car is clean, full of gas, and that there isn't any new damage. As an aside, from a host's point of view, just this month for March, I've had over 90% utilization on the car, and have always gotten 5 star reviews for every trip in the 3 months I've had the car posted. My gross revenue will be over $1000, and should be going up to $1200-1300 from here as I've raised my pricing. Not bad for a car that I only owe $275 a month on...
