I laughed when I read this, I'm that guy. I hate racing, other people on my track, in my way, 🤣 they slow me down. However, I recently started racing against AI (I wouldn't inflict my lack of race craft on other humans) and well, it's not as pure as seeking the perfect lap, but it's quite fun really. I don't think it'll ever be my first love, but a change is as good as a rest. How do European style racers feel about oval racing? Isn't that a very "pure" form of racing? I mean it's all about the tactics of racing your opponents isn't it?

Ditto.. I'm a mid-to-rear grid qualifier, but regularly finish around P10..

Thanks Daniel! This was an important video for me. There’s a lot that you learn in sim racing which seems kinda obvious after you have learned it 😂 I’m glad to have a platform to share it with people

I would actually recommend never racing against AI. They are coded to give you space and make you feel good. When you then face real people and they don’t give you space, you can easily be fooled into thinking that the AI drives well and real people aren’t following the rules and aren’t opening doors for you. Some AI is better than others but AI will not teach proper racecraft.

Great stuff. Another thing that will surely make you faster, is to practice on race fuel load. If you switch back to low fuel after 30 race fuel laps, you’ll find a tonne of time!

@@LaurenceDusoswa Nice tip, A friend also gave me a tip, it can help to practice on hard tyres to understand where the car is really twitchy. But I mean we're probably getting into advanced stuff now.

I think there’s nothing wrong with buying cheap. It helps to ground the expectations of simulation vs real life. Sim hardware, especially cheaper stuff, is easy to sell second hand at minimal financial loss. I would however recommend that people sim race on PC. Consoles are very limiting.

@@LaurenceDusoswa I agree with you yeah for people who got limited money which seems too be more an more people every year, Goes too show how many greedy CEO' s is happy too make crazy profits while people struggle with covid, Do some of the direct drive wheels have too cost so much?, I ain't too sure but if you mass producing then surely production costs drop so final cost should drop, Sim racing is crazy expensive, I want the V3 pedals 400 quid is bit much at the moment but when I got into sim racing a year ago I had the spare money an was advised too begin with Logitech an console, Worst sim racing advice I have had, Like I said if you like racing then you will love sim racing, An now I have not got spare money an wishing I just bought high end PC an VR, Got skanked with the PSVR aswell no VR support for PC2, DR2 or ACC an that proper pissed me off, So yeah I was given bad info when I bought my rig an console, I only use PC for music production an don't play arcade or games on the ps4, Got a bunch of different games but all I play on at the moment is assetto corsa so payed a grand too play on one game at end of the day, That is not how you keep people interested in sim racing, It's only coz I loves racing I still do it, I will say PlayStation messed up with sim racing the limitations are endless a long list of things I can't do that a PC does, I would pay extra for VR support on the PlayStation an would pay good money for ACC PSVR access, It just feels like people like me are being held back because of limitation with console an cost, Plus sim racing helps my PTSD an mental health that I suffer with daily, Sim racing is an amazing bit of theropy, It's helped me loads, An helped me smoke less erbz aswell, Lol, The benefits of sim racing should be shouted from the rooftops, Lol, Anyone suffer mental health get into sim racing, It will help you plus the community online is amazing too meet new people who want too see you gain skills an improve your racing ability, The Norsh in A.C. is always bit of fun, But yeah I am disappointed in the console way of sim racing, Feels like Consoles are left out of the sim racing world, It's a shame....

Don't always let them pass, but if it's early in the race for example, battling with a far quicker car will slow you down in the long run as opposed to tucking in behind them as they carve up the field

I use braking points first and foremost but as you get to know a car you can rely more on feeling. Braking points are the best way to be consistent. It is better to brake 10 metres earlier than it is to exit a corner 10 metres later ;)

Maybe it wasn’t clear enough, as another comment says similar to you. When you are of equal or quicker pace, your own lines are gold and you should not be looking at what the car ahead is doing. However, when you are slower, it’s important to realise why, and when a faster car passes you, you will get a clear indication of which corners you need to work on, as they will open the gap in those corners.

hmm.... That's an urban myth about people being quicker without feedback. Feedback helps you to feel the road. If it's pulling the opposite direction and upsetting you, then your settings are probably not tuned correctly.

Yep, your corner exits need improvement. Perhaps you’re not losing your speed before the corner. Ensure that you brake hard before the corner and then when exiting, commit to the throttle as early as possible

Don’t copy the lines of a car that you’re catching. If there’s a faster car, you want to learn. If you’re catching a car, you’re more capable and shouldn’t copy their line.

Sometimes. But that’s a racer’s prerogative though. Go as quickly as possible within the limits. It depends on the sim but we all have the same limitations and need to use every tool we have at our disposal.

btw Laurence, setup made me faster, and i´m a slow driver. When I started copying the top 5 setups on f1 2020, i saw an about 2 seconds of improvement, even tho im still 3 seconds or more away from the top. Imagine how slow i was that those 2 seconds of improvement allowed me to play the game at 85- 90 AI lvl

I cannot speak for f1 2020, but if the gearing is way off, for example, or you're using hard tyres instead of soft, that can make a difference to a 'slow' driver. But as a general rule of thumb, setup will not make you a fast driver.

It’s something you learn but mainly it’s a combination of 3 things. Force feedback, audio feedback and experience. You need to learn the things that unsettle a car and often when the car is not behaving the way you’d in certain corners, adjusting you you approach that corner or balance the car with brake or throttle load can make you faster or slower.

Getting expert advice is expensive, for sure. Many see value in it otherwise it wouldn't be a sustainable business model. Hanging on behind people is a good strategy to learn and not be under the kind of pressure that will put you off your line.

@@LaurenceDusoswa understandbly so. Its hard some guys have super high mics and they re all clipping 🤣 You can get a simple lapel microfone connected to an usb audio interface you will be able to control it much better :)

@@pedrosilvamusician I have a lapel but it’s connected to the camera. My equipment budget is small and my experience level is low :p the sound was terrible though. I actually wasn’t gonna release this video but it actually became quite popular
