AM Weather July 6, 1989 

I was 11 when this particular episode aired, but A.M. Weather had already been a must watch for years and continued to be so for many more years after. This show was so good, and I learned so much from it. They didn't need to explain the how and why. Like learning any language, if you pay attention and hear it often enough, you pick it up. There has never been a weather show that remotely compares to A.M. Weather. It's a national television treasure, to be sure.

Wow, did this bring back some memories. As a weather geek as a kid I caught this every day before school on WTVS Channel 56 in Detroit. I even remember Joan Von Ahn! The meteorologists had a way of explaining some of the more technical aspects of the weather without making the viewer feel stupid, which is more than you get from most TV weather people today. By the way, I ordered - and got - that station directory - not so much because I wanted to see the show on the road as because I'm a broadcasting geek as well and wanted what essentially amounted to a list of all (or most) of the PBS stations in the nation, and that was the closest thing you could get (and for just the cost of a stamp!). Wish I still had it.

Real weather professionals! would watch religiously especially in the winter to trach an snowstorm

I had to think in Joan Van Ahn's shoes, and when I saw the altitude numbers indicating tops of thunderstorms in that broadcast, I did not know too much about cloud tops. Now I know that the cloud tops in the area of thunderstorms is known nowadays as the EL - the equilibrium level. This is the area where the thunderstorm or thunderstorms stop updrafting way up in the top. Also, a thunderstorm with tops of up to - say 55,000 feet - is known as high-topped convection, while thunderstorms of - say 20,000 feet - is known as low-topped convection.

too bad this isn't what we get when we put on the weather channel these days
