Amaryllis in the Garden vs Pots

I've been growing Amaryllis bulbs for 14 years and they have grown and multiplied many times over.
I wanted to show you just how lovely they can grow in the ground if you have the right climate. I live in Windermere, Florida zone 9b and mine come back and bloom each March through May. The Bulbs I planted in pots all bloom in March and early April. The In-ground bulbs grow and bloom slower and the blooms seem to stay at their peak longer.
After a few years I do dig them up and separate the small baby Bulbs from the main bulb. I plant the smaller ones and the process begins again.
Happy Spring 💓🌸💓

Wonderful Amaryllis. I just moved to Florida and brought my Amaryllis with me. I noticed a neighbor had theirs outside, so I brought mine out and they are looking so good. I will be planting them in the garden since they do very well outside here.

my amaryllis is about 20 years old. This is the first time I have 6 blooms, 5 blooms a few months ago, but was normally 4 blooms. Each bloom is 7" across, the stalk is 4' long, the leaves about 5' long, and the bulb is about 12" diameter. The color is dark red. it is in a pot, I never cut the leaves. I do not fertilize it. It is always in doors. I need to repot it to a bigger 20" pot and take off the new bulbs. I do use a large tomato cage to help keep the leaves and stalk up. It might not be eye pleasing, but this is a very long experiment that I am doing - which is letting the plant do what it knows how to grow and never cut back or cut anything. I let the stalk dry out normally.

Beautiful amaryllis. I live in zone 9b in Redlands California. I bought several amaryllis bulbs last November. I had beautiful flowers. After blooming I planted most of them in the ground. I mixed potting soil with chicken manure and compost. I hope they grow and multiply like yours. We are having a lot of rain should I cover them? Thank you and have a blessed day.

During the summer months we have rain almost daily. I've never covered mine. I do have a few videos on my Amaryllis. I don't have a Playlist, but usually make a video each Spring. Thanks for visiting, Marie, I hope you'll come back again soon ❤️

Hi. Thanks for sharing. How deep do you plant your amaryllis bulbs? Do you use any bulb boost in the planting holes? TIA I'm in zone 8b south MS.
@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920
Hi Brenda, I just uploaded a new video a couple days ago. I plant bulbs about 1/3 to 1/2 exposed. I use fresh Potting soil and add Worm Castings. If I'm planting in the Garden I add a little Worm Castings in the hole. A general fertilizer would give them a good start. Thanks for watching and commenting My Friend ❤️

I am in Central FL and put them in the ground this spring. They are doing well, but I was wondering if you could prune to make them rebloom or just leave them?
@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920
Hi Debbie, I'm in Windermere so we must be close. I have several planted in the Garden and they bloom each spring. After a few years I dig them up and the original bulb has a few smaller ones that have been sending out leaves. I allow them time to dry out and any soil falls away. I do gently snap off the babies. Next year ( February) I will plant them again. The babies I put in pots like you saw in the video. The other years I don't bother taking them up. I cut the leaves off during the summer as they get unsightly. As long as the leaves look healthy I leave them. I don't think trimming them is going to give you another bloom. 👩‍🌾👍

I live in central NY, and had Narcissus fly damage last summer by planting in the ground. I didn't know anything about them, but the larvae ate their way down to the basal plate, and up into the center of the bulb. Had no idea what the bulb fly looked like, until I started researching a couple of weeks ago. They are found nation wide, have you had any problems? My friend in FL didn't know anything about them either, and her's are in the ground year around.

I am in zone 7b and would need to dig the bulbs up each fall. I have wanted to try planting in the ground. But my question is how long do the blooms last in the ground? My inside amaryllis in pots only bloom about seven or eight days before dying off. Not sure this is worthwhile or not to try planting in ground. Thanks for a nice video.
@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920
Thanks for watching. I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you. In zone 9b I can grow them in the Garden and in pots and I usually get a couple weeks out of each. 7b...I would stick with indoors. Sorry. I hope you will visit again.

Your amaryllis are gorgeous. I also live in zone 9b but in Deep South Texas. I planted my bulb in the ground back in Spring. I am wondering if you cut the foliage back to get it to bloom?
@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920
Hi Rebecca, I do cut my Amaryllis leaves back as they begin to fall over. I've never had them winter over and still look good. January and February are cool here and we might get a near freeze. First part of March I see that little green "tongue" sticking out of the bulb and signaling that it's ready to put on a show for another Spring! Every year since 2008. Good luck and I hope you'll visit my channel again soon 💗

@succulentqueen7737

Mine are planted in the ground. I never cut the green foliage, and they bloom naturally. (I only remove dead leaves). I think they need to get sun on the leaves for energy for blooms. So plant in a full sun to partial sun location.

I'm in southern Arizona and I have mine outside in pots under my mesquite tree so they get filtered shade, protection from the inferno each summer. I buy bulbs at the holidays, let them bloom, then after the last frost they go outside. I have about fifteen, about nine different varieties, but some of my first ones are putting out pups like crazy. It takes about one to two years for the bulbs to recharge and rebloom, then they're pretty consistent bloomers every year in the spring. I do not force them into dormancy for rebloom at all, I pretty much let them do as they want. I only have them in pots and containers because when they bloom I can bring them inside as I'm bed bound and can't see them outside, also if we get a hard freeze. Plus my ground is very hard pan with caliche and it's like digging in cement. My caregivers have enough to do just watering and feeding the plants for me. I tell folks I garden by "remote control" nowadays...we do a video call, they show me the plants, I tell them how to care for them. It works pretty well. Pruning the roses was a real trip, the young lady didn't know a rosebush from a weed. Now she's getting an education and wants her own plants! This is kind of fun for me too.
@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920
@Donna Joyner Hi Donn, I'm getting up and saw your post. I'm glad to hear your Amaryllis are doing well. I just started Potting Up some bulbs yesterday for their Spring show.
