"He does something to the feminine spirit" - so well put! I've read where people often say "Prince is the only guy who can wear heels and eyeliner and walk away with your girl." I don't know what it is - a comfort with gender fluidity, a quiet inner confidence without machoism, power with vulnerability and free-flowing passion, emotion and playful flirtation without needing to prove anything. . .but he is captivating, alluring, mystical and definitely frees the spirit!

April 21, 2016. One of the saddest days in music history. He is literally the only artist I cried for when he died. His catalog of music is endless. But one of his later songs released in 2014, called Breakdown, is one of the most personal/ raw Prince songs ever. It really moves me every time I hear it. You should really give it a listen. Prince passed away April 21, 2016. He had a long 40yr very diverse musical career. The song he wrote (one of many) that was covered by Chaka Khan was "I feel for you" from his sophomore self titled album 'Prince' from 1979. Prince is a musician's musician...a self taught musical genius who for the most part played all the instruments on almost all of his 40 studio album releases. If there was ever an artist/musician to dig deeper into their vast catalog of music.....it would be Prince hands down !!

2016 was a very sad year for the loss of musical icons. Starting with the passing of David Bowie in January through to George Michael on Christmas Day. Others to pass were Prince, Earth Wind & Fire's leader, Maurice White, Nat King Cole's daughter, Natalie, ska/reggae legend Prince Buster, The Beatles producer George Martin, Leonard Cohen, Glen Frey of Eagles (never put the word The in front of it), Status Quo's Rick Parfitt, Pete Burns, who was Dead Or Alive, soul legend, Billy Paul, Leon Russell, and the writer of most of Thriller and Heatwave founder Rod Temperton. Surely one of the most incredible years for the loss of leading musicians.

Prince, was the GOAT! You all ought to check out his early years too. He played almost every instrument you find in a band. Check out, "Wanna be your Lover," and Controversy. Also, the song was pre Y2K and actually came out in 1982, which was followed by Purple Rain. The band that backed him on this album as well as Purple Rain was the Revolution. In the 90s he started another backing band called the New Power Generation, and it would be worth it to listen to Diamonds and Pearls. Also check out a song that he sings with Scottish singer Sheena Easton, which you should also check her out as a solo artist as well, but their song together is "You've got the Look." And in regards to Michael Jackson and him making a song together, they actually had a rivalry. At one point Michael Jackson Wanted Prince to be in his video for the song "Bad," Prince turned it down, because he couldn't see himself playing the guy in the video where Michael Jackson sings, "Your butt is Mine." I saw Chaka Khan open for Prince in concert. Prince was generous enough to upstage his own concert by joining Chaka for her set for an “I Feel for You” duet. He emerged from a small stage in the middle of the crowd, shocking everyone at Madison Square Garden.

I am 55 years old and I saw Prince perform when I was in college. He was amazing. Though I never completely stopped listening to him, my musical tastes grew and life kind got in the way. A marriage and two kids later, my Mom asked what I wanted for my birthday. I really didn't know. I told her I couldn't think of anything, so how about some Prince tickets? I honestly don't know where that idea came from. So, we arrive at the venue, and the first thing they tell us is that Prince wants everyone moved down into empty seats. So, we go from 3rd level to 1st level. Then, Chaka Khan is the opener! What a show. I am so glad I had that moment, because we lost him all too soon. There will never be another quite like Prince.

My department had to work on New Year's Eve, 1999. We closed down our phones early, blasted this song and broke out the sparkling cider, food and confetti!! My best friend and I then proceeded to run around the whole building singing this and just making noise!! It was a very rowdy office that day! By the way, Prince gave so many breaks to female artists of the day. Lisa Lisa, Sheila E and one of my favorite artists, Nik West!

I remember when “When Doves Cry” started reaching stupid levels of radio airplay back in the early ‘80’s. Back then it was very unique and an unusual candidate for monster hit status. When a conversation with a friend turned to the topic of that song, his initial comment was, “I don’t know if the dude’s just plain weird or a freakin genius”. I’m sure that friend eventually settled on the latter assessment. While Michael Jackson never collaborated with Prince, MJ did work with another superstar on ‘Thriller’ - Sir Paul McCartney on “Ebony and Ivory”. While it’s been pointed out by other commenters that we lost Prince due to a prescription drug overdose, there was a good reason for that prescription. For years he had been jumping off of tall stacks of speakers onto the stage (in high heels no less) during his concerts. As a result, his legs were pretty much trashed and he suffered chronic pain. The prescription he OD’ed on was for painkillers. Everyone these days knows how addictive and deadly modern painkillers can be. Still tragic though. Lastly, the song “1999” was weirdly prescient, considering it was released in 1982. The premise was that the world was going to end in the year 2000. Back in ‘82, the big worry was nuclear war. The Y2K threat wasn’t even a concern for at least the next 15 years, yet that was the biggest worry when the year 2000 started to loom large. Everyone thought planes would fall out of the sky, trains would all derail and civilization as we knew it would grind to a halt, all because all the computer systems in the world would crash because they couldn’t deal with a year number beyond 1999. So, in a way, Prince was right to worry about “party over, outta time” when we hit 2000, it was just about a different worry.

As a metal guitarist I had the chance to see the artist in concert, I had told my band mate's that I was thinking of blowing the show off, my band mate's we're very convincing in the fact I would be the biggest moron on the planet if I did, during the show I was mesmerized by prince, having seen him doing what he did in a live situation, being a victim of an industrial accident I'm aware of what incredible pain is on a daily basis, prince put so much into his live performance that it's certainly not beyond my thoughts on how much pain he must have been suffering from, as for the concert, it's probably in my top 3 alongside Led Zeppelin and some one else, haha, I'll mention it again, you really should check out Band Maid, I'm confident that you will love them.
