I put Sumo Springs on my Tacoma several years back. The difference was so good I'll never own another truck without installing a set of Sumo Springs

@@AdventureBuilt I may have missed it in the video but another minor but important benefit to the Sumo Spring, is they allow for a bit more up travel on the axles because they compress below the level where the stock bump stop, stops the axel from moving up anymore.

If you notice @7:00 there is also a bump stop located inside the rear spring. On my 4 Runner I paired the sumo springs with the Icon hydraulic bump stops located inside the rear spring and I can literally hit the nastiest bumps at any speed and it won't bottom. When the sumo spring starts to fully compress the hydraulic bump takes over. Overkill yes but with way less travel I can hit bumps at the same mph than in my Raptor. Pair that setup with some good AT MT tires and higher speed desert running in a 4 runner is doable.

TLDR: I did Sumosprings in conjunction with a 1.5" lift shackle on the back of my Xterra and the difference makes me giddy! The combination of more headroom for uptravel and a much bigger more progressive bumpstop has completely gotten rid of the harsh bottoming out that Xterras love to do stock. I'd recommend them for that scenario.

i bought the front and rear sumo springs for my 2023 4runner and installed them, curious as to why you didn’t use the support plate? according to the included installation instructions there is a quarter inch flat piece of metal that is supposed to be sandwiched between the sumo spring mounting bracket and the frame.

I added Sumo Springs to my TRD OR LB because I pull a small camper and they've been awesome to reduce the harsh bottoming out. I too recommend them.

@@peterolfert7477 Look at the wt ratings and what you carry. I have very small 16’ camper and usually just my wife and I so not much stuff. The blue has done well for me. They do squish when I haul really heavy loads but that’s only been maybe 2x in the past year+ of ownership. I hate the soft factory springs on the truck so I added airbags to prevent rear sag. I don’t want to get into suspension upgrades. I don’t need a lift, bigger tires and don’t want to deal with all the downstream changes that happen when you change suspension.

Let us know if the movement changes when temperatures drop. Remember old elastomeric Rock Shock mountain bike forks in the the 90’s that used urethane springs. The compression and return rates changed as temps dropped.

I think it will definitely change but since it’s a bump stop and not the actual suspension I don’t think it will be an issue. Will definitely keep you up dated if it is.

Will you be installing these on your Tacoma? Will these prevent rear sag when loading up extra heavy things in the back? I have Extra Heavy OME leafs (added a lead to the heavies). I have a camper 400 lbs. and might carry a dual sport dirt bike in the future on the hitch in my Tacoma. I was leaning toward air bags..

I will most likely be adding these to my rig also to help out with the bottoming out that happens once in a blue moon. I think you will absolutely like the sumo springs but you are really heavy so air bags might be better. Sumo springs would be more reliable but air bags would be more helpful with controlling all that weight. I wish I knew more about the air bags. Hope this helps.

Trevor ended up going with sumo springs so he didn’t lose ride quality while not pulling the trailer. It’s a toss up. Hope this helps.

I am about to put Sumosprings on my Lexus GX460. I tow a tandom axle trailer tipping the scales at 5500 lb and had a tongue weight of 600 lbs. I use a load leveling hitch. My question is would you recommend a Blue or Black set of Sumos??

I would say go with the blue. I doubt you would need the extra firmness of the black. Trevor is digging the blue.

How much sag reduction does this provide when towing a trailer? Seems airbags might have more flexibility with ride height than a static bumper, but I could be wrong.

Nope you are 100% correct. Airbags can assist in your ride height and shock absorption. The sumo springs will only dampen the bottoming out of that occurs.

How do different lift height affect using this and up travel? It does look fairly long. Would Stock height fit this? You guys have how much lift in the rear?

Trevor has about 2.5” of lift. When the sumo springs are installed and Trevor is not pulling his trailer he barely touches the sumo springs unless he takes a big hit to the rear. When he is pulling the trailer the sumo springs is constantly being used to keep the rear from bottoming out. There is no issue with up travel.

Are you changing it up because you’re not happy with the Ironman FCP? I just put their Stage 3, 3” lift on my Lexus GX460 and my initial impressions are just mediocre, granted I haven’t mounted up the 35s yet since the wheels just arrived. Either way, this seems like a cool product and since I need new bumpstops anyways, maybe I’ll give them a try. One last question…do these seem to limit up travel? Great content as always! I’m loving your channel!

Did he mention changing the suspension? Because I think the Sumo bump stop is supplemental for when he’s riding heavy and towing, but otherwise the suspension seems fine.

@@GrizzlyPath He made comments about wanting to improve the ride and even says now he needs to address the front. It gave me the impression that he’s seeking ways to change the ride compliance which translates, to me, discontent with the setup. I could be entirely wrong.

Thank you very much and no Trevor is still in love with the FCP Stage 3. They basically just dampen the violent bottoming out when you are running heavy or sitting huge bumps. They definitely get more use when Trevor is pulling the trailer. And there is no limit in the up travel at all. Thanks again!!!

I have a 19 TRD OR w/ RC 2” lift. Any strut/shock failure issues on up travel if I added these? They seem to compress much further than a trad extended bump stop. Or would the red heavier ones resolve that?

Trevor has never had a single issue running the sumo springs. I’m not so sure that it really is compressing more and if it is it doesn’t seem to be causing any issues. Hope this helps.

Unloaded it doesn’t get much use since the suspension isn’t bottoming out.

@Adventure Built Any concerns with the compression putting additional stress on areas of the chassis that weren't designed for the increased loads? I know the loads would be dynamic under normal conditions, but when towing and having loads persistent, would that increase fatigue where they are attached at?

Much less than a shock load from bottoming out I’m sure. Other than that it’s only the axle housing and the frame mount. Probably fine.

Yes they don’t interfere with the KDSS at all. Just limits the up travel.

It will help more as a travel limiter so you don’t have a harsh bottom out. An airbag would be ideal because you will get the extra lift and support. Hope this helps.
