Massive new mental health research has shed light on which types of exercise can help people suffering from depression & anxiety, and the frequency & duration we should be aiming for to feel the benefits. The huge study showed that exercise was as good and often better than medication and therapy work at reducing symptoms of depression & anxiety! If you’re wondering how to overcome depression, or how finally rid yourself of anxiety, exercise has been shown to be a huge piece of the jigsaw.
In February 2023 Dr. Ben Singh & colleagues from the University of South Australia released the results of giant meta-review. They put together the results over a 1039 randomised controlled trials, with over 128,000 participants, to see what it tells us about exercise & mental health. The results showed that all types of exercise help. And any amount of exercise was of benefit. Some were slightly better than others though…
DEPRESSION and EXERCISE:
• For depression, the best results were from strength-based interventions (Gym, calisthenics, working your muscles)
• at a moderate to high intensity
• 4-5 days a week was better than less often … OR more often.
• Sessions of 30-60 minutes showed the best result… but keeping the exercise to under 150 minutes total per week showed the best result
… so 4-5 days of 30 minutes gym or calisthenics sessions, where you go pretty hard at it, seems optimal.
ANXIETY and DEPRESSION:
• For anxiety the best results were from stretching, yoga, and other mind-body modalities like Pilates, where the movements are more calming & mindful.
• But still at a moderate to high physical intensity.
• Again, about 4-5 days a week… for under 150 minutes total seems the best
… so, if you’ve been feeling anxious, 4-5 days of 30 minute sessions of yoga or stretching a week-where you’re mindful but still working your body pretty hard-seems optimal.
It’s important to remember though, that all forms of exercise were beneficial, so doing what you like makes sense. Just get out there. If you’re depressed and find it hard to get yourself going, just start with a bit to kick-start yourself into action.

What type of exercise helps your mental health the most?

"Bear walking" a few short laps up & down the hallway plus daily sunshine walking at a brisk pace, at least 20 min. Just started couple weeks ago. Building a strange & beautiful new confidence at 67, and getting a bit better by the day. Bear walking is so funny it dispells taking myself too seriously~ but my arms & shoulders and innards are starting to 'knit together' too somehow. Thanks for asking us this good question 🎉

The *worst* thing about two years of auto-immune trouble that completely immobilised me for long stretches of time and cost me my fitness, was the effects this had on my mood. I'm getting better, but unfortunately mid-high intensity won't happen for a while yet. I'm getting there, though!

SibylleLeon, unfortunately I too have dealt with similar issue. One thing that has had a huge impact was that I started taking 450 mg of vitamin B1& vitamin D daily. I read a study that shows we don't get enough in our foods. Even though a CBC doesn't show a problem; your mood, depression & energy are all affected from not having enough. No side effects.

At age 54, I took a job as a Courtesy Clerk. It's changed my life. My depression/anxiety was so de-habilitating. My life is 80% better. Hardcore exercise working at the busiest (insert chain) grocery store in Northern Calif. I push carts. I also deliver groceries to parked cars for 1 hr each shift. I work 24 hrs a wk- 7:45am-2:45pm Sun, Mon, Tue & Thu. Wages: $22.75 per hr. I wear very thick knee supports each day, it really helps. My healthcare pkg is at no cost. At 62, I'll cut my shift to 3 days/5.75 hrs and take my Social Security at that time. Hopefully I'll work until age 70 when my small Pension kicks in. Apparently my current 4 days a week is perfect. I gain no health benefits by increasing it since my physical body rebels big time when I work even a few additional hours. I am at my Max. Thank you so much for this video, I better go hit thumbs up and listen to more to see if I want to subscribe. God bless you!

melissajohnston5706, please consider adding 300mg of vitamin B1, also add vitamin D to aid in your fight with depression/anxiety. Recommended by Psychiatrist because we don't get enough in our foods.

Amazingly enough, I have been having all kinds of anxiety during the last 2 years but thanks to God I have been able to do strength workouts as a personal trainer nonetheless. A little did I know I was doing like precisely the amount recommended in intensity, frequency, hours spents per day etc. Thanks for the video man

Great info as usual. I find a hard workout with cardio and strength training to be uplifting and energizing, while yoga and stretching are great to wind down at the end of the day.

ive had anxiety for 20 years and im finding intense exercise hyper stimulates your body and keeps you from sleeping which contributes to more anxiety. walikng outdoors, stretching, and moderate resistance is best from someone whose experimented with this problem forever.... this video is correct in their assessment

Don’t exercise late in evening other than a nice walk that will tire you out a bit and maybe more intense early in the day.

Our son has Schizophrenia. Due to exercise, he battled it all thru College (age 18 to age 31), got a Bachelors Degree, worked for Apple being moved up during that time. He broke his leg playing basketball and within about 4-5 months, turned into something you'd see in a horror movie. He was making excuses not to see us until one day, we drove over there. We'd seen him 8 weeks before and his leg was in a cast, he seemed very off but we wrote it off as depression. He spoke on the phone fine but conversations were short. He ate pretty healthy until the last few months to help combat Schizophrenia. He was overall aware he had the disease, got a degree in Exercise Science but the disease won deluding him in the end. Exercise is how he battled it- ran almost daily for long periods. He is on SSDI and not SSI which is a Godsend he could work long enough...I am a Christian so I've handled as a demon possession. When he was so off he was attacking me, I talked to the demon directly during that time. I sang to *it* a christian song and he let go of his grip. I guess it drove him nuts or something. I know my son would never do or think those things, period. So he needs to realize it isn't him, don't let it guilt him, it's another entity. I think it's helped him despite being an un-believer as he's taught it's not him either so don't take on a demons sin. Don't take it personal but try to keep it at bay with exercise and diet. Sadly he is not saved which is #1 and even if he was, I still think demon possession is possible.Think Apostle Peter when Jesus told him "Get behind me Satan" after Satan entered into him making him say things to Jesus which were sinful.. I cannot imagine calling it a disease, this is a calculated person/entity without a body who took him over period, anyone with eyes can see it ...those who have truly seen anyone in a schizophrenic episode, especially the first one which is usually the worst before they get stabilized. Anyhow thank you do much for your educational videos and your nice personality, they go hand in hand :) I said a prayer for you, your influence on this world, your health and your salvation kind sir

kavindakotuwegedara705, if you haven't looked into receiving B12 shots and folate yet; please do. I read a patient that recovered by having them daily. He bought it himself after getting the first few shots from a Dr since the body needed to replenish due to the bad things that are added to our foods still. Look for further information on Google to verify.
