For the Cake: ▢2½ cups all-purpose flour (300g) ▢¾ teaspoon baking powder ▢¼ teaspoon salt ▢1 cup granulated sugar (200g) ▢2 tablespoons orange zest (about 3 oranges) ▢1 cup vegetable oil (240ml) ▢¾ cup fresh orange juice (about 3 oranges/180ml) ▢3 large eggs ▢1 tablespoon vanilla extract For the Glaze: ▢1 cup powdered sugar (120g) ▢zest of ½ orange ▢2 tablespoons orange juice (about 1/2 orange)
I have a tip for zesting. I take my potato peeler and peel the orange trying not to get the white part. I put the strips into my blender and add the amount of sugar called for in the recipe. I blend it up and it works perfectly. It will not work if you do not add the sugar as orange will simply stick to the side of your blender container. I originally tried this when I did not have a zester,. Even though I now have a zester, I actually prefer this method. I find it much simpler for me.
I love understanding the mechanics of it. Never thought to rub the yest into the sugar - can’t wait try it and the cake . John is amazing , will be getting the cook book 📖
I made one change to the recipe, I added 200 ml of melted butter and 40 ml of olive oil. And a tbsp of milk. The cake came out amazingly delicious 😍😍😍 it was mildly orange, mildly buttery. It’s good for those who don’t want the orange flavour too strong and don’t wanna risk messing with the recipe
I never really comment under these recipes, but this one was BOMB! As an Indian, I love my teacakes and this was the perfect recipe for those 4 pm hunger pangs! I even repeated this with cranberry juice and dried cranberries instead of the orange and it came out just as divine!
I love my tea too (thanks to my British Granny) and love a good tea cake. I made 4 mini loaves to freeze and added currants to 2 of them. Came out awesome 👌
Hi John. I'm a keen baker/cook over in South-west England.I recently used your method of rubbing in orange zest & sugar to bake my partner's birthday cake.Such a great idea and the favour was WOW..👍.
In 2014, I did a bake sale in aid of the Samaritans, following my boyfriends death from suicide on NYD the same year. Someone put in a request for an orange cake.......I had never made one before! Anyhow, I made it, and was pretty much to the recipe you show here. They gave me £100 for it!! I spent 3 days solid baking, 1 day decorating, and my 50th birthday selling the cakes......I raised just under £1,000......I was exhausted! lol xx
This recipe saved me . Had guests last night , one of them is lactose intolerant and is not easy to find a recipe without butter or yogurt so this one was a bomb . Felt so proud and my guests loved it . Greetings from Istanbul 🙏
I can't cook, but I've made this orange cake twice now, and its been perfect each time. My husband eats it every morning with his coffee. Thanks John! Oh, and I've ordered your cook book as well. Cheers, Lisa.
John, I love this recipe!!! I get so many compliments regarding your banana bread recipe, waffles, pancakes, lemon loaf. You’re my favourite baker ever!
Hi, i have a question in baking, can you give me some advice. the thing is when i open the oven to put the batter in, the tem always deflate , so should i increase the temperature or just go with the begin setting?
Two years later I'm still fascinated by the texture of this cake... It has a mysterious aura in itself because the batter is not beaten to incorporate air and the amount of baking powder is ridiculous for a cake with around 2,5 cups of flour!
when i tried the recipe it came out super dense and the only way i can explain it is by the ratio of baking powder but a lot of other people say it came out amazing. idk if i did something wrong.
@@chelsiestclair9125 The cake has a crumb more to the dense side like a pound cake, but it is quite fluffy. One important issue is to have all ingredients at room temperature, so that the leaveners of the recipe (in this case eggs and baking powder) are not prevented from acting, etc.
when I was a little girl, my mother would bake my favorite orange cake every year on my birthday. It was a regular layer cake and soooo good but now I want to try this cake because a large layer cake would be too much for just me and your recipe looks amazing!!!!!!!
I have made this cake more than once and the last time I made it, I couldn't help myself and posted a short - Amazing Orange Cake with Delicious Orange Glaze - with the video on how the finished cake looks like. It't because my family loves this cake so much! We can't get enough of it. The taste is out of world! Thank you, John. You put so much work into your videos and I can tell you love cooking and baking. You're also an awesome dad.
I made this orange bread twice and I absolutely love it. Infusing the sugar by rubbing in the orange zest is super smart. The glaze is very important to the overall taste so I make it a little thick so it doesn't run down too much. I love this recipe.
This is a fabulous cake! It’s the perfect size for a small family. I combined the orange zest with the sugar and let it sit over night. It will pull out more of the orange oil than just doing it by hand. Very easy to put together and delicious!
Your recipes never fail.. Thankyou from all my heart. The cake tasted amazing, the house smelled amazing. I kind of over baked the top but that crunchy part turned out to be the best part for my daughter.
Gracias ❣️❣️
AMAZING!!!! if you have any doubt, please make this beautiful cake and enjoy it. i have a small coffeeshop and our customers loved it! it smells like heaven🍊
I tried this recipe today and I thought the cake wasn't going to work out but it came out great!!! The flavors are delicious. I substituted baking powder with baking soda and vinegar since I didn't had it. Thank you for this recipe :)
I’ve always thought the room temp thing was a bit over the top, but hearing the very logical reason solves my problem of the result of not doing it….the middle taking too long to cook. In fact, I quit trying to cook anything in a loaf pan long ago for this reason. Now I’m back, thanks so much John for your no nonsense approach to cooking making it simple yet extremely informative.
🌸 That was my grandma’s favourite cake, she had different citrus fruit trees around her garden. I don’t think she shared with granddad lol 😂. It was mostly gone before he had chance to notice it when he came home Mine is orange cake ☺️
You have won me over - your methods are well reasoned, your sense of taste and balance yields crowd pleasing results… all this is true, but sincerely, I’m in love with your kitchen! What is that awesome stove on your set? And your island is rather more like a continent. I’m green with envy.
Thanks for your version. For my vegetarian recipe I only add baking powder, baking soda one Tsp each and 2/3 cup yogurt and i add cranberries and walnuts. I like your recipe as well ❤️
Thank you for sharing this video orange bread loaf . And tips for mixing with hands sugar and zest and peeling pieces by hand to make sand texture before adding to batter. Awesome . Old school tip as well. But new for me . Great idea for all citrus lemon and orange sugars mix amazing! That's how you get that beautiful texture in the bread mix. So wonderful to know that. And powder sugar frosting also for glaze topping on top of bread to drip into sides of bread for added tastes. Very nice delicious bread. For coffee or afternoon snack. With cold milk. Or vanilla ice cream on the side of it.
John, like always this recipe is absolutely a slam dunk! Every recipe I have tried from you has turned out incredible. My partner really loves orange cake so of course I had to drop everything and bake this when I first watched this video. It's funny that you explain what happens when you cut the amount of sugar in baking, because I usually do that and I definitely notice that the end result is often dry and bready BUT I've made this recipe twice now, both times with half the sugar, and it still turned out beautifully, both in flavour and in texture! I can't wait to experiment with other citruses with this one, absolutely the best :) Edit to add: also, combining the zest with the sugar is a game changer, I will be taking that tip with me haha
Tried this in the Caribbean with Valencia oranges, made some miscalculations with a lovely result. Mixing the zest and sugar. Brilliant. Delicious cake..
Wow, wow, wow not enough adjectives to describe how tasty this cake is! 😆 I baked it today and it made a home run. Super easy too. Im a big fan of your culinary contribution. Thank you!!
Just wanted to say I made this last week after watching this video. I had a few tired looking oranges that needed using up. I wasnt hopeful with the cake batter it seemed thin compared to a normal batter . It cooked for an hour but could have done with a bit less as my oven is fast . I even made the glaze to go on top . WOW i was so surprised how moist the cake was ! I usually use butter not oil in my cakes so I was concerned about the taste. I will be making again very soon . Thank you so much for this recipe.
This is a top notch recipe. (Thanks for giving metric measurements!) I followed it to the letter, except taking the cake out 10min earlier because my oven has a fan. Perfectly baked. It’s a very sweet cake and doesn’t even need a topping imho, just delicious as is with a cup of tea. Maybe a few fresh orange wedges on the side.❤🍊
Hi, I just baked it (in Morocco) but the cake did not rise for me. I followed all the directions, the only thing is that I mixed the eggs and wet ingredients with the mixer : (. Also, I had to take it out from the oven at the 55 minute mark as it was not rising anymore.
The recipe is amazing.. though I tweeked it a little by reducing the sugar to a 3/4 cup and made the oil 2/3 of a cup..added 1/3 cup yogurt and 1/4 tsp baking soda...it was perfect
Thank you very much John! Orange cake is a staple in our household, and it is frequently made by my mother. As the next generation I do tend to try and change things a bit, gently so as to not upset my mother of course! 😅 As such, I would love to test this recipe. 😁 PS: I secretly want my family recipe to reign supreme. Sorry not sorry. 😆
This is the first time watching your video from Nigeria. Just from this video you are so honest. You want everyone to know what you know without hidden out any recipes from us. May God bless you more. I am a student in this field. Just yesterday we are supposed to bake orange recipe but just because I couldn't get the orange flavor my boss decided not to teach me. I told her their should be other solutions she said no. So I came online to check and luckily for me. Your video is the first I see and I am so impressed with what you thought us here. Thanks a lot sir.
I'm waiting for my cake to come out of the oven, and WOW, mixing the zest with the sugar changed the sugar so dramatically. PLUS, it made the kitchen smell wonderful!
I just tried this recipe and its brilliant. The orange zest sugar mentioned tastes Heavenly. Best orange cake ever! Thanks for sharing it Preppy Kitchen! I'm in India and we would love to have an Indian print of this book! I did use a smaller quantity ie 2 eggs and 1 cup of flour. I'm regretting not making a bigger cake!
I decided to make this a few days ago but I didn't have oranges so I substituted lemons in identical amounts to this recipe. It looked and tasted nice but the flavor was kind of mild compared to what I expected. I put it in the fridge overnight and had a piece the next day cold and it was AMAZING. The lemon flavor was rich and it was cool and refreshing. Can't recommend enough, I'll definitely be making this again. Can't wait to try the orange version too!
Dude, you've hit ever memory of what delicious baking is all about. My mom would bring home so many quality recipe books and I would watch her try them out. Me offering to help. That's what I think of your video shorts .Good quality recipes that are handed down to younger generations that most will cherish for a lifetime .
I made this really early this morning and mine had this crumbly crumb, not fine or airy like John's. And my son said it's a bit dry though the flavor is very good. I didn't change any ingredient, but my loaf pan (the only kind I own, and there's 4 of t them) is a 9x5 and dark non-stick. Most likely steel with an aluminum core. The cake cracked on top but didn't overly brown on top, the sides are a pretty tan, and overall there's a sort of crunchy texture I've never gotten on any pound cake or any sort of cake I've made (not that many to be honest). I've made dozens of quick breads, some that I've coated the pans with butter then some cinnamon sugar and they've gotten this crunchy texture, but I only buttered this loaf pan for this recipe. I used my scale to measure the ingredients that needed weighing, and my Oxo measuring cup for the liquids. Only thing I can think of is that I might've over mixed the batter, but the cake isn't tough, it almost melts in your mouth, except for the crust. Can anyone help? Oh, and I used "classic", which is plain olive oil. No taste but it's not a light oil. Didn't have any other kind, except for coconut, and that wouldn't have worked because of the obvious taste of it.
Wooow🥰. My family loved this cake. I add 1/2 cup of dried grapes (sultanas). Amazingly simple and delicious flavor. Thanku for sharing this recipe 🙏❤️ 🇲🇿
@@becchessari1 I was thinking exactly the same that I would have used chocolate glazed because oranges and chocolate together is absolutely Devine! It makes me think of Jaffa cakes too
Hello sir. I've been practicing my baking with this recipe. I've baked 3 times, and the second time, it flopped, but I kept trying, and I'm super happy. Thank you so much for this delicious recipe. 🎉 Everyone says, "Practice makes it perfect" it's what I'm doing. 😂
I baked this cake today and OMG. It was so delicious and moist. I think it was definitely one of the best cakes I’ve baked so far. Thank you for this recipe. I’ll be adding it to my Christmas menu this year. 😊
I made this yesterday and served it to some people I know. One of my associates is vegan so I made this vegan by substituting aquafaba for the eggs. They raved over it! They truly adored every single bite and had seconds. Thank you for this, John.
In the oven right now, and yes, it smells amazing! The fragrance wafts throughout the whole house. Made from the Valencia orange tree in the back yard.
I made this on the 1st of April for the first time and I’ve seen made 1 loaf everyday the past 3days. My siblings & I are obsessed. Thanks John ❤from Nigeria
I tried out your recipe earlier today and it was absolutely delicious. Nice and fluffy. Busy making another for tomorrow's afternoon tea. I've experimented with quite a few of your recipes and all were a success.
John, this looks gorgeous. I'm salivating. I make an orange version of drizzle cake with ground almonds as well as flour and sometimes some ground cardamon seeds in the orange syrup drizzle. As far as reducing sugar is concerned, my philosophy is to be choosy. If you cut out sugary rubbish like fizzy drinks/sodas, cheap, mass produced bakes and confectionery, then you can 'afford' to eat the sugar in high quality bakes, such as homemade cakes and biscuits/cookies.
I really love watching your videos and the way you give measurements as well as weight makes my life so much easier. That makes your channel one of my top channels to watch. Thank you also for explaining all the technicalities such as acidity to batter, acid on marble and the rest. You are amazing!
This is very similar to my orange drop cookie recipe. Using the juice from the oranges you zested does give the cake a more tangy flavor than store bought orange juice (which I love).
I’m so grateful for this recipe! I tried to bake an orange cake a couple times and always it came out as failure. And finally your recipe and detailed instructions helped to create perfect cake 🎉 Thank you so much!
It's 11:50pm here and I really want to just get up and go make this cake. It looks and sounds so moist and yummy and I live in Valencia, Spain, so the oranges here are gorgeous! If I had powdered sugar in the cupboard it would have been midnight baking for sure!! By the way, would light brown cane sugar work instead of the white sugar in the cake? Love your channel xx
I made this with in season organic Valencia oranges and organic whole wheat pastry flour and it came out divine!! Panera's orange cranberry muffin comes NO WHERE close to this!!💗🙌
Hi, I am from South Africa. I just baked this mind blowing cake recipe. Wow, it's amazing how little baking powder you used. My best ever . I did comment earlier. Put it to the test. Fantastic results. Thanks again
Funny you mentioned blood oranges and tangerines. I have some freshly squeezed frozen juice just waiting to be used. I also learned this tip from Anna Olsen. She said not to let any of your zest go to waste. That you can freeze it then grab as needed. I've got both in my freezer as well, lol. It works too. Last week I made lemon curd. I just pinched out the amount of zest I needed then tossed it into my curd. Perfection!! I don't think I've ever made a lemon pound cake. Looks like I've got a few flavors to make now... lol 😋
A thousand thanks for sharing the secret of how to get the most flavor out of orange, lemon, or lime zest? I have never heard this one before. Use your hands to rub the oils of the zest into the sugar! Genius!
Hi John..thats my favourite cake..i make orange cake with semolina and flour in a 1:1 ratio but you need moisture like orange juice and milk. By the way today i realised you say 'amazing' so many times😉
I made your orange cake and yes it is absolutely delicious! I am from Colombia but have lived in Canada for 23 years and this flavour reminded me of my childhood, my grandmother used to bake a very similar cake for us that was to die for…not far at all from yours! Thanks for the experience. Yum!
I love, love, LOVE your recipes! This one - I'm going to try it next weekend! I've been making tiramisu according to your recipe for more than a year and literally everyone who tried it loved it so much, it's just amazing :) same with lemon bars, which I made again last weekend 💛🧡
Not a fan of orange cakes usually but had lots of oranges left so thought i’d give it a try. It was actually the best orange cake i’ve ever had! So good I wish I could add a picture too
Hey John - your scale tip has been a lifesaver with my baking - thank you!! This cake looks so bright and delicious - I'm going to make this for our brunch this weekend. Always love your videos and wonderful ideas! xoxo Amy ❤️
I tried this one, sooo good!! I didn’t have vanilla extract so i did use vanilla oil but just a few drops. I tried add maple syrup too and also was good!! Everyone loved it at the house party. Thank you!!! Definitely will make again.
I cannot wait to try this recipe! Your book hasn’t released here in Brazil yet and I’m dying to get my hands on it 😭💖 I’d love to see the fruit champagne cake recipe in the channel!! PS: I just made it and it’s definitely one of the most delicious cakes I have EVER made! My entire family absolutely loved it, such a great recipe!!!
