This was my surprise song last year at the Eras tour, and it still blows my mind I got to see it live. She hadn’t played it in over ten years, and the crowd went freaking crazy.
You need to react next to Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve from her Midnights album which is also about John but she wrote it when she was 32, the same age John was when he dated her.
Taylor was 19 when they “officially”dated.. But John wrote to her on social media long before that and asked her to do a duet with him. He didn’t reach out to her team or her manager, he reached out to her directly. They did the duet and then went on tour together THEN they started dating “officially “…. John described her in several interviews as a child and talked about a moment during rehearsal when he turned around and saw her on the floor on her knees drawing pictures.. (this will be relevant later) John is known for him being toxic/abusive in several of his relationships. Jessica Simpson wrote about it in her book and described the relationship in very similar ways that Taylor did. When he and Jessica broke up he went on the radio bashing their sex-life. Slut-shaming her and completely destroyed her career. The relationship with John has really effected Taylor’s life. He really did damage to her. So much so that she when she was 32 released a new song (would’ve could’ve should’ve) locking back at the relationship now being the age John was when they dated. The song is track 19 on the album. John has during the years tried to sue her several times, HE wrote a revenge song about her (paper doll) and it’s been said by several women that he keeps on writing them long angry emails. So in a way he’s still trying to get to her. I really hope you do would’ve could’ve should’ve after this. it is an important song to be able to understand Taylor and her music better
I think this was a couple of years after that relationship, but I think that emotion is all real. She has another song, released about 10 years later, that talks about how that experience still affects her. You mentioned more than one were requested, so I'm guessing this is already on your list, but if not, it is called Would've, Could've, Should've.

It's actually right around 1 year after the breakup. They broke up early 2010, and the Speak Now tour started in February 2011. From interviews, we know that he sent her a slew of super long angry emails for months after they broke up. And while they lessened in frequency, he didn't stop sending them entirely for YEARS. So yeah, it was all still very fresh for her because she was still dealing with his vitriol. 😕
Thanks for reacting to this awesome early Taylor live performance. The emotions that she exuded in that performance were strong. No wonder she stopped regularly singing it live.
the only song I can see her apologizing for is Better than Revenge and she ended up changing the line in it when she did her re-record so I would def listen to both versions 🙌
Taylor apologized in her song "Back To December". Taylor was adorably savage in "Better Than Revenge". I don't see that one as apologizing to neither Mr. Jonas nor his new girl. I was kind of happy that she changed the lyric in Taylor's Version of "Better Than Revenge".
@@vidsorama2 I believe in an article she did years later apologizing about the mattress line - I think it was a Rolling Stones interview. But you’re right he could be talking about song lyrics that are apologizing
She wrote different song lyrics (from other musicians) on her arm each night of the tour. There’s a master list of which lyrics in which city if you google it 👍
