The song is not just a tribute to Greg Carroll, but also Victor Jara, a teacher, poet and activist who was tortured and killed in 1973 when dictator Augusto Pinochet was installed as dictator in Chile. "Jara sang, his song a weapon in the hands of one, though his blood still cries from the ground."

Yes. If I’m not mistaken, Victor Jara’s hands were cut off as part of his torture.

Song is about a dude that joined the tour as a roady and was killed in a motorcycle accident (Bono’s bike) in the rain. Hence the ending ‘that’s when the rain will break my heart’.

This song is an elegy for Greg Carrol, a long time roadie and friend of the band, who died some time shortly before they started work on this album. Greg was Maori, and so there is a lot of Maori mythical imagery in the song.

I think the story goes that Bono sent Greg on an errand & whilst on that errand Greg was involved in a road traffic accident

A place called One Tree Hill is in New Zealand. A Māori memorial. A poignant song once you know the history.❤

I've always loved this album beginning to end. Underrated? I went to sleep with this on repeat..... Just like I said earlier, the song is only underrated because it wasn't a single release. To U2 fans they love it. Next song is gonna drop your jaws.... It's so different but dark.. and deep. Soft and driving and building up to a roaring crescendo.. Oh and a rap... Yes they did a rap song...

I have been to 6 U2 shows @ MSG and Wachovia center and Franklin field(Univ of Penn campus)...huge U2 fan,.. this is my favorite jam of ALL TIME

I’m soooo jealous that you are getting to experience U2 for the first time! My only bit of advice is try to do live versions when possible. That and to say don’t stop as they have 40 years of great music to enjoy. Try The Saints Are Coming, Exit, Mofo and City of Blinding Lights.

For the next song Exit do the live from Paris or Rattle and Hum versions. Way better than the album versions.

When I used to work in Manchester in the early mid 90s, before driving into Manchester, n turned left towards Whitefield and Prestwich there was a Tree where a Guy smashed his Bike into n died n his mates had mounted a Brass plaque onto the Tree saying "We'll see you again when the stars fall from the Sky, and the Moon turns red over One Tree Hill" I thought it was very touching monument to a young life lost...

I remember the basement band I was in in college during the 80s so wanting me to sing this song. And I remember so wanting and trying to sing it. And so completely failing such an impossible song.

One Tree Hill is not far from where I live. Drive past it on the way to work. I'm sure Greg's family appreciate this song. Be careful on those bikes out there.

Come on ye all, lets get this man the subscribers he deserves, lets try get to 10k then 100k, I've seen so many of these reactions from others with more subs and they are s***e, my Da got me into U2 but he liked the 80's stuff and hated the 90's but I was other way around, hope you are all well, blessings from the north of Dublin to ye all yeh 🇮🇪 try 'Please' by U2 live Popmart Mexico or Rotterdam, its epic, I know I'm a cheeky w****r, all the best, no f*****g bullying on this channel yeh, see it confront it, if anyone one want to try bullying me?
