In this video I answer a few questions I have been receiving frequently through instagram, then talk about my week 3 experience.
As always, the detail I go into is limited due to confidentiality with Amazon. I am more than happy to answer any questions you have - so please put them in the comments!

Direct hires are offered 10-15% more than the internal promotions so it breeds resentment from L4s who worked years to get there. And often fresh out of college new hire area mgr knows less than an ambassador($16/hr).

Great videos! Thanks so much for doing this. I can’t wait to hear how things are going. I just got hired and start my training in 2 weeks. Any advice on attire? Shoes/clothing? What do you bring to work with you as an area manager? Where do you leave your belongings? Do you have an office space? I’m sure I’ll think of a lot of other questions. Thanks again!
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 3 года назад
Hi Emily - these are really great questions and I will answer them in my next video. In short, attire is very casual (I have been wearing jeans or shorts and a tshirt). For shoes I wear running shoes since you walk so much. I bring a backpack with my food, water, a jacket, notepad, and things like that. I leave my belongings at the stand-up desk out on the floor since you dont get an office space

Thank you for your videos. I have a few questions 1) Can't wait for your next video going a little more in-depth of what you exactly do as area manager 2) Without invading your personal privacy, can you go a little more in-detail what that salary / compensation package is like? Are the stuff on glassdoor accurate? 3) After watching this video and reading the comments, I'm a little bit confused. Even with OT, you aren't being paid extra? So how often is OT? If night shift is four 10 hour nights or three 12 hour nights, then technically can't you be only working 36 hour weeks? Are you not able to pick your shifts or something?
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 3 года назад
I am glad you are looking forward to it! I am going to be making that video over the next couple days. While I am not positive that the components of the compensation package are the same for everyone, in general it consists of your salary, a sign-on bonus, and RSUs. The amount of each is highly variable depending on your experience. As a salaried employee, your salary covers any hours that you work - you do not get any extra money for working overtime. The shifts I oversee are 12 hours, but end up being 13.5 for me since I have to arrive early and since they do not factor in the 30 minute unpaid lunch when they say 12 hours

Hey Grant! It's me again. Still waiting on my written offer but I did have a question I haven't seen asked yet, or maybe I've missed it. In terms of relocation, I had to put 37 states in rank order of my preference. Did you have to do the same? Also, how did your relocation preferences play into where you were ultimately sent? I only ask because there are only a handful of places I definitely do NOT want to go but they are very far down on my list. Thanks again! Glad to see it's going well!

Grant, thanks for these videos! I'm hoping to land an area manager position but I have a few concerns based on the reviews I see online. Generally speaking, they tend to be negative. I believe that most people motivated to post something are those who have had a negative experience but the majority of people who are neutral to positive do not post. What are you seeing as the general vibe of the workplace as well as the relationship between managers and managers and hourly staff?
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 3 года назад
These are great questions - I have only been working here for a few weeks so my experience with Amazon is limited. I do agree that most people who post reviews tend to do so out of poor experiences, although that is not always the case and everyone's review does has merit. For me personally, I had spoken to a good bit of AMs prior to making my decisions, so I felt that I had a decent idea of what to expect. I also came from another industry where I worked for a few years, so I had specific things that I wanted to be different in my next job. Interactions between everyone seem to be positive especially if you are intentional in making those connections. The hours are long and there is no way around that - that's the one thing that is consistent and true.

That’s a great question. L4 and L5s are on different levels so when it comes to the promotion reach, an L5 is closer than an L4. L4 is typically what a college hire or someone with less than two years of related experience would be pipelined into.

Hi Jordan - I think a lot of people feel the way that you do, especially when it is their first time relocating to a new city for a new job. I have been doing this for a couple of years (the relocating aspect) and from my experience I find it to be exciting. You get the opportunity to make new friends and experience a way of life different than what you are used to. In regards to work, it is a bit earlier to give a cohesive answer to that but I can say that my experience has been very positive so far. I would recommend wearing shoes for comfort over fashion - that doesn't mean you can't have both. I wear running shoes since I am on my feet 90% of the time I am on site. Something like boots or shoes with minimal cushion will result in sore feet very quickly.
